Abstract

A tidal area is a part of the coast that is influenced by the rise and fall of the tides. The area is a dynamic area, which experiences exposure to the air when low tide comes, easily mixed with fresh water in the rainy season and inundation. Marine flora and fauna that live in the area can adapt to it. The purpose of this study was to identify gastropod species and the density of each species that were found attached to the hard substratum in the tidal area of Bulo, Mandolang District, North Sulawesi. Data were collected by line transect and squared methods. Gastropod samples obtained were treated by using 70% alcohol. The length of each species was measured before being identified at the species level. The results show 175 individuals consisting of 30 species from 14 families were recorded. Substrat of rock and dead coral were covered and dominated the intertidal bottom. The highest density of Gastropods in the tidal area of Bulo, Mandolang District, North Sulawesi was the species of Cellana radiata. The density of Cellana radiata was 3.8 ind./m², while for the other 20 species of gastropods, each species was 0.07 ind./m². Physical and biological factors that affected the presence and density of gastropod species are discussed. Keywords: Gastropods; Density; Tidal; Mollusc; Bulo Village. Abstract

The objectives of this study are 1) to Identify the specimen of macrobenthos attached to the substrate provided in 2 locations. 2) to determine the type of substrate attached by the larvae at both sites.  3) to determine the density of Macrobenthos attached to the substrate provided at 2 sites. A plywood plate had 16 holes with a diameter of 1 cm each that had been randomly filled with organic substrates, namely coconut fibers, palm fibers, shells with 'bysus' threads, and non-organic substrates in the form of plastic ropes. Each substrate has four replicates.  The plywood plate with 3 replicates was placed in each station.  The plate was removed and taken to the laboratory after 1 month. The identification up to family, genus, and species as well as the density of each species were applied.  The results showed that not only the larvae of Septifer bilocularis attached to organic and non-organic substrates, but six species of larvae were also identified. The sizes of new settler macrobenthos from 2 mm to 1 cm attached on organic and non-organic substrates were identified. The density of new settlers species attached to substrates varied from 0.03 – 0.5 individuals/cm2.  The new settlers identified 7 species in Tiwoho and 3 species in Malalayang.    Keywords: Settlement, Substrate, Tiwoho Coast, Malalayang Coas.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the type of mangrove, mangrove density, mangrove thickness, tides, associated biota objects, tourism suitability index, and carrying capacity of the Darunu mangrove tourism area.  The research period is October-December 2023.  The research methods used are cruising survey for mangrove species, line transect for mangrove density, remote sensing for mangrove thickness, and visualization for associated biota objects.  Data analysis for the tourism suitability index (IKW) and area carrying capacity (DDK) is guided by the provisions of Yulianda (2019).  The IKW value is 2.0 with the appropriate category and the DDK value is 25 people per day.  The size of the DDK value of the mangrove tourism area depends on two main factors, namely the length of tracking and the length of operating time.  The greater the value of tracking length and the length of operating time, the greater the DDK value, conversely the smaller the value of tracking length and the length of operating time, the smaller the DDK value.  As a recommendation to the village government to be able to extend the tracking distance by utilizing the mangrove spaces that are still available, in addition to the tourist period can be extended with adequate facilities such as electricity, lighting, etc. so that the value of DDK can still be achieved as much as possible to increase the economic income of the village community while still paying attention to environmental sustainability.  Furthermore, community participation to preserve this mangrove forest area is needed for the sustainability of ecotourism-based mangrove tourism at Darunu Mangrove Park. Keywords: Area carrying capacity, Darunu Mangrove Park, Ecotourism, Mangrove, Tourism suitability index. Abstract

Abalone pearl farming has significant potential to improve the livelihoods of coastal communities. This study aimed to measure early pearl blister layer thickness and analyze mortality in Haliotis varia following nucleus insertion. A four-month experimental study was conducted in Pulisan, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Forty abalones underwent nucleus insertion using quick-drying adhesive after being anesthetized with benzocaine (1200 mg/L). Samples were collected monthly for two months to measure pearl layer thickness. Results showed that the average pearl layer thickness increased from 0.093 mm in the first month to 0.145 mm in the second month. However, mortality was highest in the treatment group (30%), followed by the control group with anesthesia (20%), and the control group without treatment (5%). This study concludes that pearl formation in H. varia is continuous but that insertion and anesthesia procedures stress individuals. These findings provide a foundation for developing more efficient and sustainable abalone pearl farming techniques. Keywords: Pearl, Pearl Production, Abalone, Haliotis varia, Anestesia. Abstract

This research used the exploration method, where a dive team of three people descended to a subtidal depth of 3 to 10 meters. The dive team surveyed this site for 40 minutes. Measurements of environmental parameters seawater temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and turbidity—were taken using a Horiba U-536 and pH meter. The results identified 11 species. The average pH was 8.24 at Station A (Gasoline Station) and 8.06 at Station B (Malalayang Beach Walk). The average seawater temperature was 28.69°C at Station A and 29.08°C at Station B. Turbidity was 0 NTU at both stations. The dose of dissolved oxygen (DO) was 6.77 mg/L at Station A and 6.92 mg/L at Station B. The salinity was 31.49 ppt at Station A and 31.35 ppt at Station B. Except for TDS, all environmental parameters support Nudibranchia's life. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) values were 57.73 g/L at Station A and 57.33 g/L at Station B, respectively. These TDS values are unsuitable for benthic marine life since they do not fit their range tolerances. Nudibranchia attached on substrates variations from dead coral with algae (DCA), sponge, algae, and dead coral fragments. The most dominant substrate occupied by Nudibranchia was dead coral with algae (DCA). Abstract

The research problems addressed in this study were what species of bivalve and what densities each species of bivalves inhabit on the coral reef flats both  Mandolang and Malalayang, North Sulawesi. This study aimed to identify the species of bivalves and the species density of bivalves.  Data were collected using a belt transect method measuring 20 m in length and 1 m in width on both the left and right sides of the transect line at a depth of 3 m. Three belt transects as replicates were deployed at each site of coral reef.  All specimens of bivalves encountered were documented and identified, and species density values were subsequently calculated. The results revealed four bivalve species, namely Tridacna maxima, Tridacna crocea, Ruditapes philippinarum, and Barbatia barbata. T. crocea, T. maxima, and R. philippinarum were identified only in Mandolang, whereas R. philippinarum, B. barbata, and T. crocea were identified in Malalayang. Furthermore, R. philippinarum and T. crocea were found in both Mandolang and Malalayang. Bivalve density in Mandolang varied among species, with T. crocea at 2.67 ind/40 m² (0.07 ind/m²), T. maxima at 1.33 ind/40 m² (0.03 ind/m²), and R. philippinarum at 0.67 ind/40 m² (0.02 ind/m²). Similarly, in Malalayang waters, R. philippinarum showed the highest density at 10.33 ind/40 m² (0.26 ind/m²), while B. barbata and T. crocea exhibited the same average density of 1.33 ind/40 m² (0.03 ind/m²).
