Abstract

The Makassar City Government's Waste Processing for Electrical Energy (PSEL) project has become a topic of discussion and debate in various media outlets, including Tribunmakassar.com and Fajar.co.id. These two media outlets present different perspectives in their coverage of the project. This research employs a qualitative framing analysis approach to examine the pros and cons of the two media's reporting perspectives. The primary data, in the form of several related news articles, were analyzed using Robert N. Entman's framing tools. The results of the research are distributed into the following analysis units: define problem, diagnose causes, treatment recommendation, and make moral judgment. In the Tribunmakassar.com media, the problem is defined as the rejection of residents, which is perceived as potentially detrimental to the interests of the PSEL national strategic project. Fajar.co.id presents PSEL as a solution to environmental problems and residents' land, emphasizing the justice of land payments that have not been paid for 31 years. Tribunmakassar.com's diagnosis of causes highlights the alleged existence of individuals who sought to sabotage the project or bidders who provoked the community to refuse. Fajar.co.id highlights the divergence of opinions between the municipal government and residents regarding the project's location and the potential social and financial implications. Tribunmakassar.com assesses the residents' rejection of the project as a potentially detrimental action to the interests of the PSEL project, which is a national strategic project. Fajar.co.id evaluated PSEL as a potential solution to the environmental and land issues facing residents, with a particular focus on the fairness of land payments that have been outstanding for 31 years. Tribunmakassar.com proposed the necessity for enhanced coordination, the involvement of the KPK, and the preparation of tenders as a means of overcoming differences in opinion and the intricacies of regulations. Fajar.co.id proposed that further study, transparency, and the consideration of alternative approaches could be beneficial in addressing concerns and resolving disagreements.

Abstract

This research was conducted in Tanah Toa Village, Kajang District, Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi, which until now still adheres to the beliefs of its ancestors, one of which is wearing all-black clothes which are considered sacred and sacred. This research method is descriptive qualitative and uses an ethnographic communication approach. Data was collected by means of observation, interviews, literature and documentation. The purpose of this study was to describe the history and traditions of the Ammatoa Kajang ethnic community's traditional clothing, Bulukumba Regency. The results of this research on the history and traditions of the Kajang tribe's traditional clothing are a marker of the cultural identity of the Ammatoa ethnic community, which illustrates the belief that humans are born from the realm of darkness until the end of their lives they also return to the realm of darkness. Carrying out the Ammatoa ancestral tradition as the highest customary leader who also used traditional clothing in the past, reflecting adherence to customary law (Pasang) especially the principle of attallasa' kamase-mase or living modestly/simplely, representing equality for everyone before God (Turiek Akra 'na), a sense of equality and a shared destiny. Abstrak Penelitian ini dilakukan di Desa Tanah Toa Kecamatan Kajang Kabupaten Bulukumba Sulawesi Selatan yang sampai saat ini masih memegang erat keperyaan para leluhurnya, salah satunya yaitu menggunakan pakain serba hitam yang dianggap sebagai pakaian yang suci dan sakral. Metode penelitian ini deskriptif kualitatif dan menggunakan pendekatan etnografi komunikasi. Data dikumpulkan dengan cara observasi, wawancara, kepustakaan dan dokumentasi. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendiskripsikan sejarah dan tradisi pakaian adat komunitas etnik Ammatoa Kajang Kabupaten Bulukumba. Hasil penelitian ini pada sejarah dan tradisi pada pakaian adat suku kajang merupakan penanda identitas kultural komunitas etnik Ammatoa, yang menggambarkan kepercayaan bahwa manusia terlahir dari alam kegelapan hingga akhir hayatnya juga kembali ke alam kegelapan. Melaksanakan tradisi leluhur Ammatoa sebagai pimpinan adat tertinggi yang juga menggunakan pakaian adat di masa lalu, mencerminkan ketaatan pada hukum adat (Pasang) khususnya prinsip attallasa’ kamase-mase atau hidup bersahaja/sederhana, merepresentasikan kesamaan derajat bagi setiap orang di depan tuhan (Turiek Akra’na), rasa persamaan dan senasib sepenanggungan.

Abstract

Music videos have become a popular medium for conveying social messages. This study analyzes the representation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) messages in Taylor Swift's music video "You Need To Calm Down" using a semiotic approach. An in-depth analysis of the visual symbols, music, and lyrics in the video aims to reveal hidden meanings related to LGBT issues. The results of this study indicate the presence of visual codes that represent the LGBT community, such as the use of bright colors, eye-catching costumes, and scenes showing same-sex relationships, using John Fiske's semiotic analysis. This study makes a significant contribution to understanding how music videos can be used as a tool to campaign for social issues. The findings of this study can be a reference for other researchers who are interested in studying the representation of gender, sexuality, and identity in popular media.

Abstract

This study analyzes the social network of first-grade students in a private Islamic elementary school in Makassar to understand their interpersonal communication patterns. Using Social Network Analysis (SNA), the research identifies the characteristics of the students' network, including density, centrality, and core-periphery structure. The findings reveal a dense social network with a density of 0.758 and a cohesion index of 0.770, indicating close interactions among students. Significant differences were found between only children and non-only children, with non-only children having broader and denser networks. Gender dynamics also emerged, with male students being more active in forming social relationships compared to female students. The core-periphery structure reflects the inclusiveness of the network, though some students are positioned on the periphery. This study provides valuable insights for teachers, parents, and policymakers to foster social interactions and create inclusive learning environments.

Abstract

The Ferdy Sambo case developed into a major institutional crisis in Indonesia, marked by inconsistent official statements, shifting chronologies, and growing public distrust toward the police. In the digital media environment, this crisis unfolded not only through the disclosure of new facts but also through ongoing transformations in narratives circulating within the online public sphere. This study examines how narrative shifts occurred in Instagram news coverage of the case by @narasinewsroom and analyzes the role of digital framing in shaping meaning during a legitimacy crisis. While previous framing studies tend to capture media representation at a single moment, this research highlights the temporal dynamics of narrative construction in social media-driven communication. It also emphasizes multimodal framing, integrating verbal, visual, and vocal elements, alongside the active role of audiences as prosumers in negotiating meaning. Using an interpretive qualitative approach, this study applies Gamson and Modigliani’s framing model combined with temporal narrative mapping. Nineteen posts were purposively selected from 182 Instagram uploads published between July 2022 and February 2023 to identify key narrative turning points. The findings reveal five phases of narrative shift: construction, disruption, exposure, escalation, and closure. The transition from the initial “shootout” narrative to the “murder plot” narrative indicates the erosion of institutional narrative authority. Multimodal framing devices and prosumer interactions play a crucial role in delegitimizing inconsistent official accounts and reinforcing alternative interpretations aligned with emerging evidence. This study demonstrates that narrative shift functions as an analytical indicator of institutional legitimacy crisis in digitally mediated communication and underscores the importance of coherent and transparent crisis communication in maintaining public trust in the digital era.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technologies and the increasing global internet penetration have driven significant transformations across various sectors of life, while simultaneously intensifying the phenomenon of the digital divide. This inequality is not only related to limited access to technology, but also involves low levels of digital media literacy that affect individuals’ ability to effectively utilize information. Therefore, this study aims to map the development and scientific structure of digital divide research in the context of digital access and media literacy using a bibliometric approach. The data were obtained from the Scopus database, consisting of 124 scientific documents published between 2015 and 2025. The analysis was conducted using Biblioshiny and VOSviewer to generate visualizations such as keyword density maps, co-occurrence networks, and the distribution of contributions by authors and countries. The results indicate that digital divideresearch is dominated by key themes such as digital divide, internet access, digital literacy, and media literacy, which are conceptually interconnected. In addition, there is a significant growth in publications with an annual growth rate of 28.47%, involving 427 authors with a relatively high level of collaboration. These findings suggest that the issue of the digital divide is gaining increasing global attention and continues to develop dynamically. This study highlights the importance of integrating technological access and digital literacy as a strategic effort to reduce the digital divide in the future

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the responses (feedback) given by netizens to four social media accounts of regional heads in South Sulawesi. Qualitative research with a descriptive approach was conducted with a focus on the scope of managing responses (feedback) from the public on the Instagram social media accounts of Makassar Mayor Ramdhan Danny Pomanto, Parepare of Mayor Taufan Pawe, Gowa of Regent Adnan Purichta Ichsan, and North Luwu of Regent Indah Putri Indriani for the period June – September 2023. Data were analysed using the NVivo 12 Plus application tool. The results showed that the management of feedback on the Instagram accounts of the four regional heads was not optimal because there was no SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) format given by each regional head to the account manager, although some feedback was answered via direct messege as well as with a pattern through the scope of related agencies to find solutions. The form of feedback used by followers on the regional heads' Instagram accounts consists of positive, negative, and neutral feedback.

Abstract

This study examines how pappaseng, ancestral Bugis moral advice are transmitted through family communication and how such processes shape the ideal character of Bugis women. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the research integrates textual analysis of lontaraq pappaseng manuscripts with interviews and participant observation among culturally embedded informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed through thematic coding, symbolic interactionist micro-analysis, and discourse-narrative synthesis to identify dominant moral themes and communicative mechanisms. The findings reveal that pappaseng messages directed toward women emphasize honor (siri’), loyalty, domestic responsibility, moral self-discipline, and relational intelligence. These values are transmitted through a triadic mechanism: verbal advice, narrative reinforcement through proverbs and storytelling, and behavioral modeling by parents and extended kin. Family discourse functions as a dynamic arena of meaning-making in which daughters internalize, negotiate, and occasionally reinterpret inherited norms. While vertical parent-to-child transmission remains dominant, horizontal and oblique channels, as well as digital and educational influences, recalibrate but do not eliminate indigenous ethical continuity. The study demonstrates that pappaseng operates as a living symbolic system reproduced through interpersonal communication rather than as static textual heritage. By integrating symbolic interactionism and social learning theory within an indigenous framework, this research contributes to intercultural communication and character education scholarship and offers a family-centered model for revitalizing local wisdom in contemporary contexts.

Abstract

Integrating career orientation into high school education is a critical step in equipping students to make informed and purposeful decisions about their future. Considering the growing diversity of career opportunities and the increasing competitiveness of the global labor market, such programs play a key role in helping students understand professional pathways and the competencies required for success. This study investigates the benefits and impact of structured career orientation initiatives on students' decision-making processes at the high school level. Using documentation analysis, the study examined 32 documents consisting of research reports, educational policy documents, journal articles, school activity records, and relevant theoretical sources that met specific criteria of relevance, recency, and completeness. The analysis followed three stages, namely data reduction, categorization, and conclusion verification, allowing for a systematic interpretation of how career orientation programs function in various educational settings. The findings indicate that career orientation not only introduces students to diverse fields of work but also enables them to recognize their individual interests, talents, and necessary skills to achieve long-term goals. Additionally, the program strengthens students' confidence in selecting appropriate career paths and emphasizes the collaborative role of parents and teachers in offering consistent guidance and support. These findings also contribute to the achievement of SDG 4 through inclusive quality education, SDG 8 by supporting students’ readiness for decent work, SDG 10 by reducing disparities in educational and career access, and SDG 17 through strengthened collaboration among schools, families, and stakeholders.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis karya seni Menghibur Sangiang Serri karya Mukhlis Lugis dalam konteks budaya dan spiritualitas masyarakat Bugis, menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Umberto Eco dan konsep Les lieux de mémoire dari Pierre Nora. Karya seni ini, dipamerkan dalam The Eleventh Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, merupakan representasi visual dari ritual tradisional Mappadendang, sebuah ungkapan rasa syukur atas hasil panen padi yang melibatkan unsur-unsur budaya agraris Bugis. Melalui analisis semiotika, penelitian ini mengeksplorasi bagaimana tanda-tanda visual dalam karya seni ini, seperti figur perempuan, padi, dan alat pertanian, merepresentasikan nilai-nilai budaya, spiritualitas, dan solidaritas sosial dalam masyarakat Bugis. Selain itu, dengan menggunakan konsep les lieux de mémoire, penelitian ini menyoroti bagaimana karya seni ini berfungsi sebagai ruang memori kolektif yang menghidupkan kembali tradisi dan memperkuat identitas budaya Bugis di tengah arus globalisasi. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa karya seni tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai media estetika, tetapi juga sebagai sarana pelestarian budaya dan komunikasi lintas budaya yang penting untuk mempertahankan memori kolektif dan identitas lokal. Dengan demikian, karya seni ini menjadi jembatan antara masa lalu dan masa kini, serta antara identitas lokal dan wacana global.
