Abstract

Since early March 2020, the Coronavirus outbreak has begun to spread in several regions of Indonesia. The government is starting to be aware of the spread of the virus by tightening supervision of the movement of people from one place to another within local, national, and international areas to avoid transmission. The government also issued policies to maintain distance, wear masks, and wash hands to stop the spread. Many office tasks and teaching and learning processes are carried out from home. This requires teachers to be able to utilize internet-based media for their teaching, such as social media, which is popular in the community. Therefore, in this PKM, we provide additional benefits from social media to teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Ambawang who teach their students from home. PKM was held offline on Saturday, October 10, 2020, and was attended by 28 participants. This activity has provided enlightenment and alternatives for teachers in teaching

Intercultural approaches in English Language Teaching may increase the awareness on three things, they are native culture, target culture, and international culture. The data were collected based on three journals that have been written by some Indonesian researchers in the same field of research. They are: Muhammad Iwan Munandar and Imaratul Ulwiyah (2012), Gisela Elshadelin and Mateus Yumarnamto (2020), and Deswila, et al (2021). The method of this study is descriptive qualitative method by using systematic literature review. The journals were taken from Research Gate site and Google Scholar search engine. The findings are presented descriptively by discussing (1) the ELT textbooks that become the sample, (2) the aspects of culture content in each article that can be found in ELT Textbook, (3) and the implication of the cultural representation in each textbook. It is hoped that the discussion from the three journal articles will be helpful for the ELT teachers to get the knowledge about cultural content in each textbook and be more creative to enhance the students’ intercultural competence while learning English as the second language.

Abstract

The researcher conducted the research to describe the teacher and student interaction during the teaching-learning process and to analyze the frequent FLINT categories by Moskowitz (1976). The participant in this research was an English female teacher taught in class VII F at SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Raya in the academic year 2022/2023. This research was a case study design that used qualitative method. The data was collected by observing the teacher and student interaction during the teaching-learning process. The researcher used the teacher talk video transcript in analyzing the FLINT categories. The result of the research showed that the teacher’s dominant language was Bahasa Indonesia. The teacher’s utterances in Bahasa Indonesia appeared 95 times during the teaching-learning process, which means the teacher used Bahasa Indonesia in English lessons. The teacher should be built good oral during the teaching-learning process, not only focus on delivering the material. The frequent categories used by the teacher were giving information and asking questions. Moreover, the rare category the teacher used was the student’s ideas. Through analyzing the FLINT system, teacher talk in the classroom was accessible in describing the dominant language performed by the teacher and analyzed frequent categories used by the teacher during the teaching-learning process.

Abstract

Joy is a motivational movie that can inspire the audience to work hard and achieve their dreams. This research aims to analyze the intrinsic motivation of the main character in the movie, employing a descriptive-qualitative design. According to the Basic Psychology Needs Theory used in this research, intrinsic motivation is driven by three basic psychological needs: autonomy (the need to control one's own experiences and actions), competence (the need to feel effective and masterful), and relatedness (the need to feel belonging and socially connected). This research is conducted by identifying all three basic psychological needs reflected in the utterances of the main character. Using the movie and its script as primary data sources, the study employs a document analysis technique to collect the data, with an observation table as a tool for data collection and a content analysis method to interpret the data. The findings show that the main character's intrinsic motivation is certainly driven by basic psychological needs. It is revealed that the main character’s intrinsic motivation is mostly driven by the need for competence, followed by autonomy and relatedness. This research not only contributes to the understanding of basic psychological needs but also their impact on intrinsic motivation, driving individuals to accomplish their goal.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the error level of Ketapang Malay students in the English Education Department in pronouncing eight English fricative consonants and the dominant errors produced. Data were collected through performance tests using qualitative descriptive methodology. There were eight sentences in the text with 24 fricative consonants divided into initial, medial, and final positions, with the total transcriptions are 168 words. The findings showed that of the seven students, the pronunciation error was 52.38%. Based on this point, the students' error level is ''Fair”. The dominant errors occurred in labiodental voiced fricative [v] and interdental voiced fricative [ð]. The students scored poorly for these consonants because they substituted the sound with bilabial stop [p], labiodental fricative [f], alveolar stop [d], and alveolar stop [t]. In conclusion, this researcher underlined the error is caused by unfamiliarity with the sound itself.  The absence of some fricative consonant sounds in Ketapang Malay is also a major problem and the influence of spelling and pronunciation between the L1 and L2 also causes students to make errors because students tend to substitute with sounds that are easier to pronounce.

Abstract

This study aimed to get a clear description of how positive interdependence and promotive interaction as two of five key elements in cooperative learning account for the success of students’ achievement in essay writing. A mixed method design was employed to describe if the characteristics of both positive interdependence and promotive interaction were found in the activities performed by the groups and whether these two elements had the potential to support students’ achievement in essay writing. Using Google Classroom as the learning management system to mediate the learning process, there were 52 undergraduate students participated in this study who were divided into 10 small groups consisting of 5-6 students. Data required for this study was collected from both written records of students’ activities in online discussions and the scores achieved by the groups on each task. The findings showed an interesting fact that the characteristics of both of the elements were easily found in all parts of the activities performed by all groups in the online discussions. However, the average scores of their works indicated that there was not any meaningful improvement from the first to the last activities. The result implied that although cooperative learning is possible to be applied in an online classroom setting, it needs proper preparation and well-designed writing tasks to make it possible to support students’ writing achievement.
