Abstract

This study explores the development of an Android-based mobile game application, "Tebak Kata Inggris," designed to enhance English vocabulary learning for elementary students at Luqman Al-Hakim Qur'an-Based Integral Elementary School in Pontianak. Addressing the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects of education, the research utilizes the MIT App Inventor software to create an engaging, user-friendly educational tool. The game aims to increase student motivation, engagement, and vocabulary proficiency by providing an interactive learning experience that can be accessed at school, home, or play areas. The findings suggest that mobile educational games can effectively supplement traditional teaching methods, making English learning more appealing and accessible for young learners. This approach aligns with the school's mission to develop linguistic competence alongside character education, leveraging technology to meet educational objectives more effectively.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to describe the percentage of post-alveolar fricative sound pronunciation acceptability among the English Language Education students in their sixth semester at the University of Tanjungpura. The scope of the study would be limited to the comparison of the first and second formants of the participants with those of the native speaker, whose formants were evaluated utilizing the PRAAT software. The data was gathered from a pronunciation performance test that was conducted via an audio recording procedure. The study involved a total of 15 participants who were categorized into three distinct ethnic groups, including Indonesian Tionghoa, Dayak, and Malay. Each participant pronouncing a set of 20 words, consisting of both voiceless and voiced post-alveolar fricatives. According to the findings of the study, 1) the percentage of voiceless post-alveolar fricative sounds that were considered ‘Acceptable’ was 40.5%, whereas the percentage of those that were considered ‘Not Acceptable’ was 59.5%., 2) the percentage of ‘Acceptable’ pronunciation of voiced post-alveolar fricative sounds was 42%, while the percentage of those that were ‘Not Acceptable’ was 58%. The inference that can be drawn is that students encounter challenges when attempting to articulate post-alveolar fricative sounds. HIGHLIGHTS : The study revealed that 31% of students exhibited exceptional proficiency in voiceless post-alveolar fricative pronunciation, whereas 33% achieved excellence in voiced pronunciation. This indicates a diverse distribution of skill levels among students. The acceptable criteria for pronunciation show that pronunciations that fall within the excellent to fair categories are in agreement with the expectations of native speakers. The correct pronunciation was achieved in around 40.5% of cases for voiceless fricatives and 42% for voiced fricatives, indicating places where pronunciation was considered acceptable. A significant number of sixth-semester English Language Education students had obstacles in pronouncing post-alveolar fricatives. The study proposes the implementation of an appropriate educational setting, the development of phonetic learning awareness, and the investigation of curricular enhancements for addressing pronunciation difficulties.

Abstract

The kindergarten students of TK Adicita Mulia require a learning achievement to fulfill their phonics reading skills. However, the students have consistently struggled to recognize the decoding concept as the fundamental learning in reading phonics. Therefore, the study aimed to determine the improvement of students’ decoding phonics using a multisensory teaching approach for kindergarten students of the K1 level at TK Adicita Mulia. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The multisensory approach involved the students’ auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and tactile senses to understand better decoding concept instruction in recognizing individual sounds and combining them into Consonant, Vowel, Consonant (CVC) words. The improvements focused on the learning outcome of developing decoding skills as the fundamental stage for reading readiness. This research also observed the students’ engagement during the learning process to be attracted to the learning media such as Play-Doh, sand, and flashcards as the interactive learning style for the students. Also, it observed the students’ disruptive behavior, such as uncontrolled behavior, impatience, and lack of focus in the classroom. The results showed that 60% of the students who did not initially improve could demonstrate notable progress in the second cycle. The learning media also generated great enthusiasm during the learning process and positively influenced the change of disruptive behavior into controlled behavior during phonics learning.

Abstract

Utilizing digital technology in English lessons, especially involving junior high school students in the process of customizing avatars from the Zepeto app, can make students more interactive and engaging, capture students' attention, and maintain engagement. This research investigated the effectiveness of using Zepeto's avatar in enhancing seventh-grade students' descriptive text writing. A quasi-experimental study was employed with a quantitative approach. Participants were 61 students from two different classes in the seventh grade, divided into an experimental group and a control group. Data was collected using a written test instrument and analyzed using t-tests and effect size data analysis. Customizing an avatar from Zepeto inspires them to write and provides them with ideas for where to start. It has been proven by the data computed, which was 5.9 as compared to 1.697 for the t-table with 30 degrees of freedom. The t-test (5,9>1,697) was shown to be greater than the t-table. The effect size formula of this experimental group was 1,02, which showed that the treatment of this study was considered a strong effect, while the control group had a moderate effect size of 0.53. The results suggest that Zepeto's avatar can be an alternative teaching media for descriptive text writing, particularly for seventh-grade students in SMP Negeri 2 Pontianak.
