Abstract

The purpose of this study is to map the knowledge landscape, identify trends, and identify research gaps regarding the use of virtual laboratories to improve conceptual understanding in science education. The limitations of conventional laboratories in terms of cost, safety, and visualization of abstract phenomena often hinder students' conceptual understanding. This study uses the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, guided by PRISMA, and a bibliometric analysis of the Scopus database for the period 2015 to 2025. Analysis of annual publication trends shows instability in annual publications, with an overall upward trend (upward regression). The 10 most cited articles in the field of virtual, augmented, and combined virtual-physical laboratories in science learning. The analysis results show an increasing trend in publications, with Chemistry as the most frequently researched subject area. Effective Subject-Specific Pedagogy (SSP) patterns identified include: the use of multimodal visualization and representation; guided inquiry-based learning approaches; strengthening conceptual understanding through variable manipulation; reducing procedural cognitive load; and connectivity between simulations and the real world. It is concluded that virtual laboratories are a powerful tool for enhancing conceptual understanding, provided they are integrated with appropriate pedagogical strategies that shift the focus from procedural knowledge to conceptual knowledge.

Abstract

The surge in disposable medical mask waste during the post COVID-19 pandemic has created a significant environmental challenge, while the shift to distance learning has hindered the ability of teachers to effectively develop students' argumentation skills. This research aimed to: 1) evaluate the effect of a ThingLink-based Socio-Scientific Issues-Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (SSI-STEM) approach on the argumentation skills of tenth-grade students; 2) profile students' argumentative abilities in solving environmental pollution problems; and 3) assess student responses to this integrated learning model. Utilizing a mixed-method triangulation design, the study involved 72 students divided into one control group (N=36) and experimental groups (N=36). The control group received standard SSI-STEM instruction, while the experimental group utilized the ThingLink-based SSI-STEM approach. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests and analyzed using paired-samples t-tests. Results indicated a significant improvement in argumentation skills (p < 0.05), with the experimental group achieving a higher average post-test score (76.3) compared to the control group (54.8). In particular, the percentage of students achieved the highest argumentation level (Level 6) increased to 39.4% in the experimental group, compared to only 7.2% in the control group. The students’ responses were highly positive, particularly regarding their interest in innovative solutions for medical mask waste. Ic can be concluded that the ThingLink-based SSI-STEM approach is an effective tool for improving 21st-century skills and environmental literacy in biology learning.

Abstract

Jenes River is one of the rivers that pass through various textile industries and residential areas in Solo. The high level of industrial activities potentially contributes to microplastics from fabric fibers and plastic containers. The study aims to solve the microplastic problem through the potential for biodegradation by microbes in Jenes River. Considering residents high activity, samples were taken from the three stations during the day. Sampling was done with a plankton net and microplastic identification was carried out by microscopy structure and FTIR test to determine its polymerization. Microbial identification was carried out through gram staining after isolation, purification, and inoculation. The biodegradation test was held in a laboratory scale using macroplastics. The results showed the upstream station was contaminated by fiber microplastic pollution of 300 particles/10 liters, middle 400 particles/10 liters, and downstream 300 particles/10 liters. Fragments were also found in the upstream and middle stations at 200 particles/10 liters, while in the downstream at 100 particles/10 liters. The results of microbial identification also found gram-positive and negative bacteria at the middle station that have potential for biodegradation as measured by the deviation of the initial and final sizes of macroplastics used as research objects.
