Abstract

This study aims to explore how environmental leadership in Islamic boarding schools plays a role in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the integration of Islamic spiritual values, sustainable education, and technological innovation. The global environmental crisis and the urgency of implementing the SDGs demand educational innovations that can combine ecological awareness, spirituality, and environmentally friendly technology. Pesantren, as a community-based Islamic educational institution, has great potential in shaping the character of students who are not only religious but also care about environmental sustainability. However, research on the role of pesantren in supporting the sustainability agenda is still limited. Using a qualitative approach and an exploratory descriptive design, this study collects data through semi-structured interviews, direct observation, and documentation involving leaders, teachers, and students at Al Ashriyyah Nurul Iman Ecopesantren. The results of the study show that environmental leadership in Islamic boarding schools contributes to SDG3 through organic agriculture and ecology-based sanitation, SDG4 with a spiritual and environment-based curriculum, and SDG5 through women's empowerment in environmental leadership. In addition, SDG6 and SDG7 are realized with environmentally friendly technologies such as biogas, solar panels, and reverse osmosis systems, while SDG17 is strengthened by global and local collaborations. Although this study has limitations in geographical scope and long-term impact exploration, the results enrich the discussion on the integration of environmental education in pesantren and provide recommendations for the Islamic education system in supporting sustainable development.

Abstract

This study investigates an ecology-based education model incorporating local wisdom to support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). The research focuses on Al-Ashriyyah Nurul Iman Islamic Boarding School in Bogor, Indonesia, examining its approach to sustainability within an Islamic educational framework. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis. Informants included school leaders, students, teachers, staff, the eco-pesantren team, and the surrounding community. Data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive techniques and triangulation to ensure reliability. Findings indicate that Al-Ashriyyah Nurul Iman Ecopesantren integrates Islamic values, local wisdom, and sustainability principles through a holistic educational model. This includes an environment-based curriculum, inclusive community engagement, eco-friendly campus management, a sustainability culture, and circular economy practices. The pesantren applies local wisdom values such as silih asih (mutual care) and reciprocal nurturing, positioning students as key agents of sustainable transformation. Through circular economy initiatives, students actively contribute to sustainability by converting waste into productive resources. These efforts align with multiple SDGs, including SDG1 (No Poverty), SDG2 (Zero Hunger), SDG3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG5 (Gender Equality), SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG13 (Climate Action), and SDG17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The integration of ecological education and local wisdom in Islamic boarding schools fosters sustainability and enhances student participation in achieving SDGs, demonstrating the potential of pesantren as models for sustainable education.

Abstract

This study investigates women's leadership models and their role in enhancing the quality of education at SMA Negeri 16 and SMA Negeri 18 in Pekanbaru City. Drawing on the concept of maternal leadership, the research aims to understand how female principals shape school culture and instructional practices. A qualitative case study approach was employed, focusing on two public high schools. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis, with thematic coding facilitated by NVivo 12. Findings reveal that women leaders at both institutions exhibit humanistic, participatory, communicative, and maternal leadership characteristics. Maternal traits such as empathy, emotional closeness, and care for both teachers and students foster a harmonious and supportive school climate. At SMA Negeri 16, leadership emphasizes discipline and governance consistency, while at SMA Negeri 18, the focus is on innovation, collaboration, and empowerment. Key strategies across both schools include teacher motivation, intensive communication, reflective practices, and continuous quality improvement through a humanist approach. This study contributes to the growing discourse on gender and leadership in education by highlighting the effectiveness of maternal leadership styles in fostering inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing school environments. The findings suggest that such models hold significant promise for improving educational quality through relational and transformative leadership practices.

Abstract

Teacher performance in junior high schools in Pidie Jaya District faces challenges due to varying levels of managerial quality and school climate, both essential for achieving educational goals. This study aims to assess the influence of principals' managerial quality and school climate on teacher performance in this region. A quantitative survey approach was employed, with data collected from 92 proportionally selected respondents using the Slovin formula. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted, and hypothesis testing utilized t-tests for simple regression and F-tests for multiple regression. The analysis supports four hypotheses: (1) Principals' managerial quality positively affects teacher performance; (2) School climate positively impacts teacher performance; (3) Principals' managerial quality positively influences school climate; (4) Collectively, principals' managerial quality and school climate significantly impact teacher performance. These findings highlight the combined role of managerial quality and school climate in enhancing teacher effectiveness. The study concludes that principals should prioritize both managerial functions and the development of a supportive school climate. Effective communication, collaboration, and strong relational dynamics are key areas that need to be focused on to improve teacher outcomes. Strengthening teacher performance in Pidie Jaya requires principals to balance managerial responsibilities with fostering a positive school climate, suggesting that leadership practices focused on these areas can substantially benefit educational quality.

Abstract

This study explores the role of reward and recognition in talent management training at Guangxi University of Foreign Languages (GUFL) and their impact on enhancing graduate competitiveness, particularly in the field of language education. Reward and recognition are recognized as key drivers of individual motivation and performance in training environments. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed to gain in-depth insights into the implementation of reward systems in GUFL’s training programs. Data were collected through interviews with 24 educators and 1 student, focusing on experiences with financial rewards, formal recognition, and their perceived effectiveness. Findings indicate that financial rewards significantly boost trainee motivation, while non-financial recognition, such as industry-recognized certifications, increases trainees’ confidence and competitiveness in the global job market. The study also highlights the importance of aligning reward and recognition systems with industry needs and cultural values, particularly within the Southeast Asian context. The results suggest that a well-structured, culturally adaptive, and industry-relevant reward system plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of talent training and in producing globally competitive graduates. Institutions in similar contexts are encouraged to adopt holistic reward strategies that integrate both motivational and professional development elements.

Abstract

This paper aims to review, identify and synthesize existing research on academic supervision programs at primary and secondary education levels in Indonesia between 2021 and 2024. A total of ten scientific articles covering the topic of academic supervision in Indonesia were collected and analyzed. The review revealed that academic supervision programs implemented in Indonesia aim to improve teacher performance and plan and provide follow-up to the results of the supervision. Various obstacles and challenges have been identified, including the understanding of supervision itself by the principal, how to carry out academic supervision in the field, and how follow-up to supervision results can be carried out. The findings indicate that although academic supervision programs have a positive impact on improving teacher performance, further efforts are needed, starting from a correct understanding of the concept, planning and implementation of academic supervision itself to the follow-up provided so that academic supervision programs can provide great benefits for improving the quality of education as a whole.

Abstract

This research explores the lived experience of teachers implementing Islamic leadership values in educational institutions through an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach. Involving one teacher participant from an Islamic secondary school undergoing management reform, this study identifies significant gaps between ideal Islamic leadership and practical implementation. Three major themes emerged: an Islamic value-practice gap, in which Islamic principles were formally invoked in institutional discourse yet incompletely operationalized in relational and decision-making structures; a capacity-readiness deficit, in which structural reform was introduced ahead of human resource preparation, producing implementation failure that was rational rather than attitudinal in character; and professional development formalism, in which institutional learning programs were experienced as certification-oriented compliance exercises rather than substantive supports for teacher professional identity. Together, these themes converge on a central finding: theological commitment at the leadership level does not, by itself, produce Islamic value enactment at the organizational level. The study contributes theoretical insights for contextualizing Islamic leadership in modern educational organizations and provides practical recommendations for improving institutional management through participatory governance mechanisms, sequenced capacity building, and professionally relevant learning programs.
