Abstract

This study analyzed consumer perceptions formed against the Black campaign narrative about deodorant X on social media. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews thematic analysis, observation of the spread of questionnaires, traces of digital analysis on social media. The study linked the findings to theoretical frameworks ELM, source credibility, prosumer theory, negativity bias, and E-WOM. The results show that negative perceptions are primarily formed through repeated exposure to content on platforms such as X (Twitter) and TikTok. Consumers with no usage experience are more receptive to negative narratives because they rely on peripheral cues, whereas experienced users tend to reject issues through more critical evaluation. Communicator credibility, negative E-WOM, and social proof strengthen the formation of public opinion, especially in vulnerable consumer groups. These findings confirm the perception of the black campaign is a social construct that is influenced by the interaction between platform algorithms, source credibility, and personal experience. Consumers without experience are more easily affected, while experienced users are more critical. Perception arises from the interaction of algorithms, message sources, and personal experiences.

Abstract

Svargabumi has emerged as one of the premier tourism destinations in the Borobudur area, part of the Borobudur super-priority tourism destinations. Svargabumi offers a blend of natural beauty and a variety of Instagram-worthy photo spots, making it a popular attraction. Promoting such destinations through social media is recognized as one of the most effective ways to showcase cultural richness. However, social media promotion must be accompanied by monitoring to ensure strategic accuracy and evaluate public opinion and sentiment. This process, known as social media monitoring, faces the challenge of managing the vast volume of data generated by online activities. Therefore, appropriate tools are essential for this purpose, one of which is Brand24, which provides comprehensive analysis, including statistical data and detailed information on all related media coverage. The research question posed is how to analyze the social media monitoring of the super-priority destination Svargabumi Borobudur. This study aims to analyze the social media monitoring of Svargabumi Borobudur as a super-priority destination. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study seeks to produce comprehensive and objective data. The research subjects are public sentiment and opinions on social media about Svargabumi, with the key informant being Svargabumi’s Marketing Manager, referred to as A. The research object is the social media monitoring of the super-priority destination Svargabumi Borobudur. The data collection technique used in this study was the social media monitoring tool, Brand24. Social media monitoring using Brand24 revealed that Svargabumi has a significant digital presence on Instagram, the primary platform for discussions about the destination. Svargabumi also has significant economic value through mentions, with an estimated Advertising Value Equivalency (AVE) of $7,008. Positive sentiments, with 33 items, also dominated, indicating that Svargabumi has successfully built a strong digital reputation among tourists. Furthermore, user-generated content and contributions from micro- and nano-influencers are key elements in increasing audience exposure and engagement. However, engagement on platforms like TikTok and YouTube can still be improved to maximize potential reach.

Abstract

Social media plays a central role in travel planning, particularly among Indonesian millennial tourists who seek information, inspiration, and real-time guidance. This study examines how social media shapes the behavior of Indonesian tourists visiting Japan, employing the framework of digital tourism communication and the theory of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM). A mixed-methods design was applied, combining a survey of 494 respondents with in-depth interviews to explore travel habits, digital engagement, and decision-making processes. Findings reveal that Instagram and TikTok serve as primary triggers of travel inspiration, while YouTube, blogs, and Google Reviews are primarily used for information verification and detailed itinerary planning. User-generated content (UGC) is perceived as more credible than commercial content, underscoring the importance of authenticity and trust. However, the viral nature of social media also contributes to overtourism, highlighting the need for sustainable destination management strategies. Theoretically, this study advances the literature by linking UGC, flow experience, and travel decision-making in the context of a developing country. Practically, it provides recommendations for destination managers, policymakers, and service providers to leverage social media strategically while promoting responsible and sustainable tourism practices.

Abstract

Social media has become crucial in tourism destination marketing, with influencers playing a significant role in shaping tourist perceptions and decisions. In Yogyakarta, promotions by influencers on platforms like Instagram and TikTok have increased the popularity of various tourist attractions. This phenomenon demonstrates a shift in tourism information search patterns, which are increasingly reliant on digital recommendations and visual experiences shared online. However, academic studies on the effectiveness of influencer communication strategies and audience engagement, particularly those related to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), are still limited. This study analyzes influencers' digital communication strategies in promoting Yogyakarta tourism and explores the potential of AI in analyzing digital engagement and narratives. Using a mixed-methods approach with qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews, the study uncovers influencer strategies that focus on aesthetic content, authentic narratives, audience interaction, and trend adaptation. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of message consistency and influencer credibility in building audience trust. AI is beginning to be utilized for creative efficiency (caption writing, visual editing) and has significant potential for analyzing audience engagement and sentiment. The findings indicate that digital influencer promotions have a positive impact on tourist decisions and support local tourism, although challenges of originality and content competition remain. Theoretically, this research contributes to the study of digital communication and tourism marketing, while practically, the results can be utilized by influencers, the tourism industry, and policy makers in designing data-based marketing strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to understand how social media and Electronic Word-of-Mouth (E-WoM) shape the FOMO phenomenon in the blind box trend among Gen Z. The theories used in this study include Media Dependency Theory, Prosumer Theory, Social Influence Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method with non-participatory observation data collection techniques and in-depth interviews with four Gen Z informants and interviewed one digital communication expert. The results of the study indicate an initial exposure to viral content driven by the TikTok algorithm, namely UGC content of a K-Pop artist. Based on the findings of in-depth interviews with four informants, it was found that the algorithm participates in presenting blind box content through two mechanisms: through the virality of a content and the interaction and activity (likes, comments, shares, and viewing duration) of informants with similar content. Through the algorithm, UGC blind box content with high traffic will be recommended to informants. Repeated exposure creates curiosity and emotional involvement, especially in the feeling during unboxing, which encourages informants to participate in the trend. These factors are the drivers of FOMO.

Abstract

Changes in communication patterns in the digital era encourage luxury brands to reach audiences through open social media platforms. TikTok, with its interactive live streaming feature, has emerged as a new space for Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) Beauty Indonesia to build relationships with a broader audience. However, this strategy raises questions about how the exclusivity traditionally associated with luxury brands is interpreted by young consumers. This study aims to explore how urban Generation Z interprets YSL Beauty Indonesia’s live promotions on TikTok, using Stuart Hall’s encoding–decoding theory as the analytical framework. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed through in-depth interviews with four informants who actively use TikTok and have watched YSL Beauty’s live sessions. In addition, a questionnaire was distributed to provide preliminary insights into audience experiences. The findings show that audiences occupy dominant, negotiated, and oppositional decoding positions, shaped by their experiences, preferences, and social backgrounds. Overall, the study demonstrates that the exclusivity of luxury brands in digital spaces is more fluid and can be negotiated through interactions between brands and audiences.

Abstract

In mass communication research, films are often recognized as a powerful medium for conveying social and cultural messages to audiences. As a form of visual communication, films serve not only as entertainment but also as a platform that reflects societal realities, including family dynamics and gender roles. This study applies mass communication theory, focusing on film as a medium, alongside family communication theory, and employs a qualitative descriptive approach using discourse analysis based on Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory to interpret the meanings embedded in the visual and verbal symbols within the film. The primary objective of this study is to examine how the film portrays the construction of toxic masculinity and how dysfunctional family communication dynamics reinforce harmful masculine behaviors. By applying family communication theory, this research explores the role of communication in shaping gender identities and how family communication patterns influence the development of social behaviors. The findings of this study illustrate how the culture of toxic masculinity in dysfunctional families shapes behavioral patterns that portray men as dominant figures, emphasizing masculinity from the perspective of mass communication.

Abstract

Music can convey experiences and social criticism. This study examines how Taylor Swift’s song “The Man” represents liberal feminism through symbolic language in popular music. The significance of this research lies in understanding how mass media, particularly music, serves as a medium for articulating and disseminating feminist discourse amid persistent gender bias in society. The aim of this study is to identify forms of criticism toward double standards, stereotypes, and unequal treatment experienced by women as depicted in the lyrics. The analysis employs Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotics combined with Stuart Hall’s Representation Theory and the concept of liberal feminism as the conceptual framework. The methodology used is a qualitative approach through textual analysis and informant triangulation to enrich the interpretation of meaning. The findings show that the hypothetical scenario “if I were a man” functions as a critical strategy highlighting male privilege in various contexts. The relationship between signifier and signified in the lyrics illustrates women’s experiences of having to work harder yet still being treated differently from men. Additional insights from informants reinforce that this message remains highly relevant to the conditions faced by women today, who continue to encounter bias, stereotypes, and unequal opportunities across social and professional spheres.
