Abstract

Language teachers were bound to perform many kinds of different emotions, known as emotional labor (EL), throughout their teaching experiences. However, despite the growing interest in recent years, the primary teachers’ emotions have been persistently ignored. This study thus aims to explore the emotional experiences of primary school English teachers in Indonesia on how those processes contribute to their professional identity. Employing a case study design, it seeks to deepen the understanding of teacher emotions by aligning data from questionnaires and semi-structured interviews (n=3) with the emerging theory of Emotional Labor Process (Hochschild, 2012). The findings reveal the dual impact of emotional labor (EL) on teachers' professional identity. Deep acting positively influences commitment by helping teachers align their emotional expressions with their professional values. This alignment strengthens their dedication and engagement in teaching. Conversely, if teachers experience significant stress and struggle their commitment may decrease. Surface acting, which involves faking or suppressing emotions, affects teachers' ability to manage stress effectively. Their ability in managing emotional labor impact their instructional beliefs and self-efficacy that undermining their confidence and teaching quality. This study highlights the need for emotional management training in teacher development programs to strengthen their capacity to navigate EL and maintain their professional identity. Furthermore, creating a supportive work environment is essential for sustaining teachers’ well-being and professional growth.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an E-LKPD (Electronic Student Worksheet) employing a Self Organized Learning Environment (SOLE) approach, specifically tailored with Liveworksheets for the acid-base topic aimed at XI grade high school or MA equivalent students. The research is centered on research and development, employing a 4-D development model that includes four phases: Definition, Design, Development, and Dissemination. This research involved one-on-one trials, teacher response tests, and small group trials to improve the development process. The study was carried out at FKIP University of Riau, along with SMAN 15 Pekanbaru and SMAN 7 Pekanbaru. This research examines the SOLE-based E-LKPD format. The data collection instruments included validation sheets given to three validators: two material experts and one media expert. User response sheets were distributed to two chemistry teachers and twenty students. The study produced an average score of 86.42% from material experts and a perfect score of 100% from media experts, both classified as valid. The trial results indicated an average percentage score of 95.1% for teachers and 90.71% for students, both categorized as very good. The study's findings demonstrate that SOLE-based E-LKPD using Liveworksheets for acid-base materials functions effectively as a learning medium.

Abstract

This study aims to develop E-LKPD based on socio-scientific issues (SSI) using liveworksheets on chemical equilibrium material for grade XI SMA/MA equivalent, to determine the validity of E-LKPD based on aspects of content feasibility, characteristics of Socio-scientific Issues, presentation, language, appearance, and software utilization and to determine user responses to the developed E-LKPD. This study was designed using a research and development design R&D (Research and Development) using the ADDIE model consisting of five stages of the ADDIE model consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. However, this study was only conducted up to the Development stage. The instruments used were validation sheets and user response questionnaires. Validation was carried out by two material expert validators and one media expert validator, as well as user responses obtained from teachers and students. After validation was carried out twice, the results of the expert validation of the material on the aspects of content feasibility, characteristics of Socio-Scientific Issues, presentation, and language were respectively 93.75%, 90.625%, 87.50%, and 87.50% with valid criteria. The results of media validation on the aspects of appearance, and software utilization were 100% and 100% with valid criteria. The results of the user response test obtained a score of 96.66% by chemistry teachers with very good criteria and 95.77% by students with very good criteria.

Abstract

Abstract

EFL learners often hesitate to communicate in English, especially during in-class activities, because they fear making mistakes. In contrast, students active in IDLE activities are more willing to communicate in English. However, development processes beyond their willingness to communicate (WTC) in informal digital learning of English (IDLE) have not been sufficiently addressed. This study explored how Indonesian EFL learners develop their WTC in English from receptive- and productive-IDLE. This study employed a narrative study. To gain a deep understanding of the stories, we purposely recruited five university EFL learners who regularly practice IDLE. The data included learning diaries and in-depth interviews with stimulus recall. Our qualitative content analysis revealed that students who participated in fan practices initially engaged with WTC, influencing various factors, including the degree of acquaintance, formality of the situation, number of people present, topic of discussion, degree of evaluation, knowledge of the subject, language of discourse, and the language proficiencies of public figures. Our findings also conformed to the pyramid model of willingness to communicate based on students’ IDLE activities. As they gradually developed their confidence and English communication skills, it took a long time, during which some of them began in junior high school and continued their studies at university. Educators may consider explicit supports to tailor in-class and out-of-class IDLE activities, which provide more qualitative and quantitative exposure to the authentic use of English.
