Abstract

This study discusses the importance of effective communication in exchanging information and ideas between individuals through verbal and visual signs. A semiotic approach is used to analyze the meaning contained in the Instagram KitKat poster. The theory of Saussure (2011) and Barthes (1977) was used to analyze the verbal and visual signs on the posters. The aim of this analysis is to understand what verbal and visual signs are and to uncover the complex messages behind their surface appearances, highlighting how signs are used to convey each meaning. Three KitKat posters from the @kitkat account were reviewed, revealing a dynamic brand communication strategy. This analysis shows how verbal signs such as slogans and brand names relate to visual signs such as images and symbols to create subtle narratives about KitKat posters that imply the meaning of always enjoying KitKat during break time. This research increases the understanding of how brands use semiotics to build strong messages across various dimensions of communication.

Abstract

This study explores how the flouting of conversational maxims in 500 Days of Summer impacts character interactions and relationship dynamics. The primary objective is to understand how ineffective communication shapes emotional connections in the narrative. Through qualitative analysis, we identified and categorized instances of maxim flouting, revealing the following frequencies and percentages: flouting the maxim of quantity (8 instances, 24.2%), flouting the maxim of quality (8 instances, 24.2%), flouting the maxim of relevance (8 instances, 24.2%), and flouting the maxim of manner (9 instances, 27.3%). Notably, the maxim of manner was the most frequently flouted, indicating that characters often communicate with ambiguity that adds emotional complexity. In contrast, the maxims of quantity, quality, and relevance were least commonly flouted, suggesting that while miscommunication occurs, dialogue generally maintains a balance between clarity and emotional expression. These findings underscore the critical role of effective communication in fostering intimacy and understanding in romantic relationships. Additionally, the study acknowledges the limitations of focusing on a limited number of scenes, which may not capture the full spectrum of communication dynamics within the film. Future research could expand on these insights by examining other conversational maxims across different media and investigating how cultural contexts influence communication styles.

Abstract

This study investigated English-Indonesian translation of existential sentence. It aimedat (1) Identifying the way of translating English existential sentences into Indonesian and (2)Investigating kinds of translation shift found in the translation of English existential sentencesinto Indonesian. Existential sentence is a non-canonical sentence used to express the existence ofsomething or someone marked by dummy subject there and copula be. Here, the Englishexistential sentences were translated into the inversion structure in Indonesian with V-NP wordorder. The structure preserved the existential content by placing Indonesian existential verbs inthe initial position of the sentences, there were two most frequently used verbs, those are ada andterdapat. Both verbs can be substituted to present the same ideas. Since English and Indonesianhave different language structure, translation shift in term of structure shift was found intranslating existential sentences from English into Indonesian.
