Abstract

Corn is an important source of carbohydrates, so it can be used as an alternative substitute for staple foods after rice. Alluvial soil has quite good potential for agricultural land, however, in its use there are several problems and obstacles such as low pH values, poor soil structure, low base saturation, low permeability and low nutrient availability. Utilizing alluvial soil as a planting medium requires a combination of red mud and chicken manure as an alternative. This research aims to analyze the effect of a combination of red mud and chicken manure on N, P, K nutrient uptake and corn yields on alluvial soil. This research was carried out at the Experimental Garden, Faculty of Agriculture, Tanjungpura University and plant tissue analysis at the Chemistry and Soil Fertility Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Tanjungpura University, starting from August 2023-November 2023. The design used in this research was a Completely Randomized Design (RAL), consisting of 9 treatment and 3 replications so that there were 27 polybags (plants), treatments included A1(100 g red mud + 1,000 g chicken manure/polybag), A2(100 g red mud + 2,000 g chicken manure/polybag), A3(100 g red mud + 3,000 g chicken manure/polybag), A4(200 g red mud +1,000 g chicken manure/polybag), A5(200 g red mud + 2,000 g chicken manure/polybag), A6(200 g red mud + 3,000 g chicken manure/polybag), A7(300 g red mud + 1,000 g chicken manure/polybag), A8(300 g red mud + 2,000 g chicken manure/polybag) and A9(300 g red mud + 3,000 g chicken manure/polybag). Abstract

Abstract

Sweet corn (Zea mays L.) is a significant upland crop commodity. Peatlands, characterized by nutrient-poor conditions, require soil conditioners for effective sweet corn cultivation. Decanter solid application serves as an alternative to enhance plant nutrient availability. This study aims to evaluate the effect of decanter solid waste on the uptake of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), as well as the yield of sweet corn (Zea mays L.) on Histosols. The research employed a field experiment based on a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six treatment levels of decanter solid, ranging from $A_0$ (control) to $A_5$ (1100 g/polybag). Data were analyzed using ANOVA (F-test), followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at a 5% significance level. The results indicated that the $A_3$ treatment (700 g/polybag) was the most optimal dose. This dosage significantly increased plant dry weight and the uptake of N and K in the shoots, with increases ranging from 158.59% to 339.3% compared to the control. The application of $A_3$ decanter solid also resulted in a highly significant increase in crop yield, as evidenced by the weight of cobs (both with and without husks), which increased between 437.4% and 770.07% relative to the control. However, this dosage did not significantly improve P uptake in the shoots. The utilization of decanter solid waste at a dose of 700 g/polybag holds great potential for enhancing the growth and yield of sweet corn on Histosols

Abstract

The detrimental ecological impact of unauthorized gold mining in Indonesia is significantly profound, notably apparent in the nutrient-deficient, sandy soils with low pH resulting from the process. These conditions contribute to considerable land productivity decline, especially in West Kalimantan. In response to this challenge, the current study proposes an inventive approach for soil reclamation using red mud residue, derived from bauxite ore extraction, and cow manure as restorative elements. This research delves into a novel soil restoration technique that employs red mud waste (a residual from ore refinement) in conjunction with cow manure as ameliorative agents. A distinct amalgamation of 0.2 kg of red mud and 3 kg of cow manure (T2R3) showcased superior results. The incorporation of this blend resulted in a significant increase in soil pH by 0.93 units, an increase in macronutrient content ranging from 82.84%-503.07%, and plant growth (plant height and stem diameter) increased between 32.85%-54.31% in the treatment with 0.2 kg of red mud and 3 kg of cow manure (T2R3) compared to the lower treatment of 0.1 kg of red mud and 1 kg of cow manure (T1R1). These changes were evident, indicating improved soil fertility and the potential for increased crop yield
