Abstract

Rooftop photovoltaic (RPV) systems are becoming increasingly popular as a source of renewable energy. One key factor that significantly affects the performance of RPV systems is the tilt angle of the solar panels. This study aims to determine the optimal tilt angle to maximize electricity production for the RPV system installed on academic building, Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Riau. The research method used is the PVSyst simulation. The simulation data input was used as daily weather for one year. In this study, variations in roof tilt angles of 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°, and 25° were examined. The results show that the optimal tilt angles for this location are 5° and 10°. At a 5° tilt angle, the RPV can generate 247,128 kWh per year with a performance ratio (PR) of 83%. And then at a 10° tilt angle, the system can generate 248,012 kWh per year with a PR of 82%. Based on the simulation results, other tilt angles also produced higher energy outputs but yielded lower PR values. This study provides practical recommendations for designing RPV systems in regions with similar weather conditions.

Abstract

The hydrocarbon contamination affects approximately 5.9 ha of soil in Sultan Syarif Hasyim Grand Forest Park (Tahura SSH), a tropical rainforest in Riau Province, Indonesia. This study aims to determine the costs required to rehabilitate petroleum-contaminated soil and evaluate the economic significance of ecological restoration in a 5.9 ha area designated in Tahura SSH. This study provides a novel economic framework for assessing ecological damage and guiding recovery in a hydrocarbon-impacted area, integrating the Replacement Cost Method (RCM) through restoration cost calculations and the Resource Equivalence Analysis (REA) to assess and compensate for environmental damage-related losses. The study results show that the three main remediation technologies selected, bioventing, bioaugmentation & biostimulation, and ex-situ landfarming, were used to remediate oil-contaminated soil in Tahura SSH. The highest remediation costs are exsitu landfarming, followed by bioaugmentation and biostimulation, and then bioventing. The ex-situ land farming method incurred the highest remediation costs. Nevertheless, it causes ecological harm in the SSH Tahura Area. REA determined that the area required to replace oil-contaminated land should be twice the baseline from 5.9 ha to 12.8 ha. Furthermore, the compensation paid by REA for environmental damage exceeded the initial assessment by 116.1% compared to using the Replacement Cost Method (Bioaugmentation & Biostimulation, Bioventing, and Ex-Situ Landfarming). This study offers stakeholders guidance on determining a fair environmental value for oil-contaminated soil. Future studies

Abstract

Customary land is an essential asset for indigenous communities and a primary source of livelihood. In recent years, however, traditional gold mining has become increasingly threatened by the emergence of artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) activities within customary areas. This study aimed to analyse the dynamics of traditional gold mining on customary land and to examine the local wisdom values that support conservation. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews. Changes in land cover were measured using the area calculation method through post-classification area statistics techniques in a Geographic Information System (GIS), and the data were analysed using qualitative descriptive methods. The findings showed that: (1) the utilization of customary land for traditional gold mining has progressively declined as a result of land-use conversion. The dynamics experienced by the Indigenous community illustrate a process of commons enclosure, in which customary land as a communal resource has increasingly been transformed into privatized or commercialized space through rental mechanisms, thereby causing traditional gold panners to lose access to their customary living and working spaces; and (2) local wisdom practices embedded in traditional gold panning contribute to ecosystem conservation. These values include: (a) the philosophy of “not being greedy,” (b) the use of simple technology, namely wooden pans (ethno-technology), (c) shallow surface excavation, (d) gold separation through the panning motion without mercury, and (e) a subsistence-oriented ethic associated with gold panning as a livelihood source.

Abstract

The potential for carbon emission reductions from palm oil plantation and mill activities at PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV Region III represents a critical contribution to Indonesia's national commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060. Operational activities—including fuel combustion in heavy machinery, generator utilization, fertilization, electricity consumption, and liquid waste treatment through Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O). This study employs a quantitative approach grounded in SNI ISO 14064-1:2018, systematically calculating emissions under Scope 1, Scope 2, and partial Scope 3 categories across three operational units: Lubuk Dalam, Terantam, and Sei Pagar. The findings reveal that mobile combustion constitutes the largest emission source, followed by stationary combustion, fertilization activities, and fugitive emissions derived from POME processing. Among the three units examined, the Terantam unit generates the highest total emissions. Further analysis demonstrates that the utilization of biogas (CH₄) recovered from POME holds substantial energy generation potential, capable of producing 950,174 kWh at Lubuk Dalam, 1,929,734 kWh at Terantam, and 880,749 kWh at Sei Pagar, with an aggregate economic value exceeding Rp 4 billion annually. Based on these findings, three principal mitigation strategies were formulated: substituting diesel-powered generators with grid electricity supplied by PLN, transitioning heavy equipment to electric-based technology, and optimizing biogas utilization for electricity generation. These strategies demonstrate significant potential not only in reducing CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) emissions but also in enhancing energy efficiency and advancing the long-term operational sustainability of the company

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of ecological remediation through bioaugmentation techniques to remediate crude oil-contaminated soil and its social and economic implications in Siak Regency, Riau Province. Oil contamination caused by leakage due to illegal tapping of oil pipelines has become a serious environmental issue requiring effective and sustainable remediation methods. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of bioaugmentation in reducing long-chain petroleum hydrocarbons (C10–C36) to meet environmental quality standards while also assessing the social and economic impacts of its implementation. A mixed-methods approach was applied, combining quantitative analysis of laboratory test results and environmental monitoring with qualitative surveys and interviews involving communities, government agencies, and companies. The results show that bioaugmentation using indigenous bacteria significantly reduced petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations from 8.4%–9.4% to below the environmental quality standard (≤0.1%) within 5–6 weeks. The most efficient dosage was found to be 1 liter/m³ of contaminated soil, as it achieved degradation rates comparable to those of 2 liters/m³ but with lower operational costs. Environmental conditions during remediation remained optimal for microbial activity, with a pH of 6.0–6.9, a temperature of 26–36 °C, and humidity of around 70%. Socially and economically, the implementation received positive responses, although community satisfaction was slightly lower than that of government agencies and companies. Overall, bioaugmentation was proven to be an effective, economical, and environmentally friendly remediation technology for the sustainable recovery of crude oil-contaminated soil.

Abstract

Village development planning requires information in the form of spatial data that is precise and accurate so that it can be used to analyze development needs in environmental, economic, and social aspects. It shows the limited spatial information related to village administration, village potential, and toponymy. The development of a spatial-based village potential map aims to present spatial information to be used in village development planning. The spatial map was developed through a participatory approach by involving Riau University students. Data collection was carried out with multi parties' participation, including the Geospatial Information Agency, Siak Regency Government, LPPM Riau University, and the World Research Institute. The method of developing spatial maps is done using the Avenza Maps application based on android and Arc Gis. The activity was carried out in Bunga Raya District, Siak Regency. Development activities are carried out through the stages of preparation (identification of needs and training), implementation (field mapping), and evaluation (making village spatial maps and verification). The results of developing a spatial-based village potential map showed promising results. The preparation stage resulted in identifying the components needed, such as base maps, developing student human resources by conducting training on using the Avenza Maps application. The implementation stage produces spatial coordinates of the village potential through participatory field surveys between Riau University students and the District's community/village apparatus. The evaluation stage produces spatial maps that have been verified by the Siak Regency Government, especially the village administrative boundaries. Thus, spatial mapping results can be used as a database in development planning and can be used as a baseline for spatial data for Siak Regency.
