Abstract

Despite increased awareness of sex differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD), disparities in sex-specific platelet biology and antithrombotic studies are still underexplored. Moreover, women are frequently underrepresented in clinical trials, with numerous research initiatives primarily focusing on estrogen while neglecting non-hormonal influences that contribute variations in thrombotic risk and treatment outcomes. We conducted a literature review to examine sex-related differences in platelet biology, such as elevated platelet counts and reactivity in females, along with distinct expression of receptors and signaling molecules. These variations influence responses to antiplatelet medications—including aspirin, P2Y12 inhibitors, and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors, and dual antiplatelet therapy—leading to altered effectiveness and a heightened bleeding risk in women. This review emphasizes the importance of non-hormonal factors, such as transcriptomic and proteomic variations, and highlights the growing potential of omics and systems biology in identifying therapeutic targets specific to sex. Incorporating sex as a biological factor in preclinical and clinical research is crucial for enhancing risk assessment and treatment results.

Abstract

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major health problem worldwide, especially in developing countries. The study of HBV genotypes is important to find out the diversity of HBV genotypes related to the severity of the disease, response to therapy, and clinical symptoms. Objective: This study was aimed to detect HBV genotypes in patients at Hepatology Outpatient Clinic, Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. Methods: This study was conducted on new patients at Hepatology Outpatient Clinic of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya in one month. Nested PCR was performed by targetting HBV surface genes. Samples with positive HBV DNA were sequenced and analysed further. Results: In this study, a total of 27 samples were obtained. The prevalence of HBV infection shown by positive HBsAg in patients with symptoms of liver disease was 55.55% (15/27 patients). Based on the results of electrophoresis from PCR products, positive HBV DNA was obtained in these 15 patients (100%). After sequencing samples with positive HBV DNA, genotype B of Indonesian strain was found to be predominant genotype (100%). Subgenotype analysis showed that 7/15 samples had B3 subgenotype (46.67%). Conclusion: In patients at Hepatology Outpatient Clinic of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, the prevalence of HBV infection was high (55.55%) and genotype B was predominant. In Surabaya, HBV genotype infection still remained like the previous pattern, although in Indonesia there have been many inter-island and ethnic migration. Further similar studies are needed to obtain the diversity of other HBV genotypes.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Stunting remains a major public health problem that affects child growth and development. Community-based nutritional interventions utilizing local food resources are important strategies to support stunting prevention. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of Posyandu cadres regarding stunting prevention through education and training on the preparation of sea fish–based MPASI and PMT in Darungan Village. Methods: The program was conducted using educational counseling, practical training, and mentoring activities for Posyandu cadres. Participants received materials on stunting prevention, balanced nutrition, and practical demonstrations of preparing sea fish–based MPASI and PMT. Knowledge improvement was evaluated using pre-test and post-test assessments. Results: The results showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge regarding stunting prevention and balanced nutrition, with a p-value of 0.025 (p < 0.05). In addition, participants demonstrated improved practical skills in preparing nutritious sea fish–based complementary and supplementary foods for children. Conclusion: Education and training using locally available sea fish as nutritional resources effectively improved Posyandu cadres’ knowledge and practical skills in stunting prevention. This program has the potential to support sustainable community-based nutrition interventions and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, namely Good Health and Well-being.
