Abstract

Passive voice remains a key grammatical structure for English learners, particularly in academic writing, yet many students struggle to use it accurately. This study analyzes the types of passive voice errors made by 19 fifth-semester students in the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. Specifically, it addresses two questions: (1) How do classroom interaction patterns such as teacher-centered grammar instruction, limited student negotiation of meaning, or feedback practices shape students’ understanding and use of passive voice, and to what extent might these dynamics contribute to the dominance of developmental errors? (2) In what ways do students’ sociocultural backgrounds, prior educational experiences, and exposure to English outside the classroom influence their difficulties with auxiliary verbs and tense agreement, and how do these factors mediate tensions between Indonesian linguistic norms and English academic writing conventions? A quantitative design was employed, with a test focusing on passive constructions in present continuous, past continuous, and past perfect tenses. Students’ responses were categorized using Dulay et al.'s (1982) comparative taxonomy of developmental and interlingual errors. Results revealed developmental errors as the most prevalent (89.9%), mainly involving incorrect auxiliary verbs (is, am, are, being, been), past participle formation, and tense agreement. These findings highlight the need for targeted grammar instruction on auxiliary patterns and participles, alongside enhanced practice, corrective feedback, and adjustments to classroom interactions and sociocultural considerations to boost accuracy.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effect of self-assessment on grammar teaching and learning, by analyzing how students identify and correct errors related to the use of simple past tense in their own work. A quantitative approach was used in this study by using a quasi-experimental design. The sample was selected using purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through a test, which was divided into two: pre-test and post-test. The population in this study was the ninth grade of MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu, where class IX C was the experimental group (n=21) and class IX B was the control group (n=18). Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test due to the study data was not normally distributed. The results demonstrated that there was an increase in learning outcomes in the use of simple past tense in the experimental group, compared to the control group. It was shown by calculations using the SPSS 24 software system where the Sig (2-tailed) value = 0.000 < 0.05, which means that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. In summary, this study indicated that self-assessment has a significant impact on enhancing students’ ability in simple past tense. The findings offer a new perspective for students, teachers and future researchers in enhancing English language teaching and learning.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effect of Augmented Reality (AR) on students’ vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 19 Palu. Vocabulary is a fundamental aspect of language learning, yet many students struggle to master it due to lack of motivation and conventional teaching methods. To address this problem, the researcher applied AR-based learning using the Assemble Edu application, which provides 3D visuals and interactive features to improve engagement. This study used a quasi-experimental method with two groups: an experimental class that received AR-based instruction and a control class that received traditional instruction. Both classes were given a pre-test and post-test to measure vocabulary mastery. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental class, with an average post-test score of 82.00, compared to 59.80 in the pre-test. Meanwhile, the control class only increased from 63.00 to 72.40. Statistical analysis using SPSS showed that the difference between the two groups was significant (Sig. 2-tailed = 0.001), indicating that AR had a strong positive effect on vocabulary acquisition. These findings support previous research showing that AR enhances motivation, memory retention, and contextual understanding in language learning. The use of AR aligns with constructivist learning theory and supports the Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasizes student-centered and technology-integrated learning. In conclusion, AR-based learning can effectively improve students’ vocabulary mastery and is recommended as a modern instructional strategy in English language teaching

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) method is effective in improving the reading comprehension of grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 1 Banawa Tengah. This study used a quasi-experimental design with two groups: the experimental group (VIII D) and the control group (VIII A). Both groups were given a pre-test and a post-test of the same type, consisting of multiple-choice, true/false, and detail questions that focused on literal understanding of the narrative text. The experimental group received the SSR method for six sessions, while the control group learned using the conventional method. The results showed a significant improvement in students' reading comprehension after the implementation of SSR. The average pre-test score of the experimental group increased from 44.64 to 74.68 in the post-test, while the control group increased from 42.71 to 63.46. The results of the t-test analysis showed that the t-counted value (3.82) was greater than the t-table value (1.675) at the 0.05 significance level, indicating that the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Thus, the application of the Sustained Silent Reading method has proven effective in improving the reading comprehension of grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 1 Banawa Tengah.

Abstract

Despite growing interest in authentic assessment as a learner-centered approach in English language teaching, empirical findings on its effectiveness in improving students’ English learning outcomes remain inconsistent across contexts and assessment types. The absence of synthesized evidence makes it challenging for educators and policymakers to draw firm conclusions about its overall impact. Therefore, this study aims to systematically examine the effect of authentic assessment on students’ English learning outcomes using a meta-analytic approach. This study employed a quantitative meta-analysis by synthesizing data from 25 empirical studies published between 2015 and 2025. The studies were retrieved from Google Scholar using the Publish or Perish application and selected based on predefined inclusion criteria. Effect sizes were calculated using Hedges’ g, and a Random Effects Model was applied to estimate the pooled effect size while accounting for between-study variability. The results reveal a statistically significant positive effect of authentic assessment on students’ English learning outcomes, with a pooled effect size of g = 1.203 (z = 5.54, p < .001). Substantial heterogeneity was observed, justifying the use of the random-effects model. Funnel plot analysis indicates no serious publication bias. Overall, the findings confirm that authentic assessment has a strong and meaningful influence on English learning outcomes and supports its integration into English language teaching practices.
