Abstract

Introduction: Overweight among adolescents in Indonesia is a growing public health issue, influenced by socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. Urbanization and economic disparities have contributed to increased consumption of calorie-dense foods and sedentary behaviors, particularly among adolescents from higher-income families. However, the role of economic status in shaping overweight risk remains underexplored. Objective: Examining socioeconomic disparities may influence the determinants of overweight in this population. Method: This cross-sectional study utilized secondary data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS), encompassing 9,977 Indonesian students aged 11–18. The analysis included descriptive statistics, bivariate tests, and binary logistic regression to identify associations between behavioral, demographic, and socioeconomic variables and overweight status. The analysis was stratified by economic level, using hunger frequency as a proxy indicator. Result: Overall, 14.7% of adolescents were overweight. Sedentary behavior was significantly associated with overweight in both low and high economic groups. Among adolescents from higher economic backgrounds, junior high school students had a higher risk of being overweight compared to senior high school students. In contrast, no significant associations were found between overweight and other behavioral factors in the low economic group, except for sedentary habits. Conclusion: Sedentary behavior is a key risk factor for adolescent overweight across economic strata, while school level influences overweight risk in wealthier adolescents. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions that address lifestyle behaviors and consider socioeconomic disparities to effectively combat adolescent overweight in Indonesia.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of smoking among Indonesians aged >/ 15 years was 36.3% in 2013 and decreased to 33.8% in 2018 (Riskesdas). The Smoke-Free Area (SFA) policy aims to minimize the adverse health impacts of smoking. Compliance in campus settings requires the academic community to follow regulations, such as refraining from smoking in designated SFA zones. Objective: To identify significant factors knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors associated with compliance to the SFA policy in the campus environment. Methods: A literature review was conducted following the PRISMA approach, using databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Inclusion criteria were full-text articles, quantitative cross-sectional studies with bivariate analysis, published in Indonesian or English between 2013–2023. Results: Four eligible articles were reviewed. Two focused on knowledge as a factor, two on attitudes, and one on behaviors influencing compliance. Findings indicate that higher knowledge levels, positive attitudes, and supportive behaviors contribute to improved adherence to SFA implementation in campuses. Conclusion: Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors are significant factors in enhancing compliance with SFA policies. Promoting awareness and cultivating positive behavioral changes among the academic community can strengthen the success of smoke-free campus initiatives

Abstract

Reproductive health problems among children and adolescents are increasing. These problems can be prevented starting from a young age. Parents play a significant role in protecting children from sexual and reproductive health problems. Educational media are needed to improve parents' knowledge of reproductive health in elementary school age children so parents can provide this information to their children. Objective: To develop flashcards to support parents in educating children about reproductive health from an early age. Method: The study used a research and development method conducted from February-May 2024 in Kartasura, Sukoharjo. The ADDIE model was used as the stages in media development. One material expert and one media expert, ten parents in the small group evaluation, and 20 parents in the field evaluation tested the suitability of the media. This was followed by implementing media use with a one group pre- and post-test design involving 30 parents to assess the effectiveness of the media. The parents involved in this research were parents of elementary school children in grades 1-3. Data were collected using questionnaires. Data were analyzed using N-gain value. Results: Flashcard media was very suitable and effective (with the percentage of media feasibility in the experts’ assessment being 90%, small group evaluation 90.3% and 88.6% in the field evaluation). At the implementation stage, there was an increase in the average knowledge score before and after using flashcards with N-gain score was 0.43. Conclusion: Flashcards can be used for reproductive health education for parents of elementary school children.

Abstract

Parents are the primary source of information for adolescents, but many parents lack an understanding of health materials. For knowledge to be increased, health media, one of which is audiovisual media, are desirable. This study aimed to develop audiovisual media on adolescents’ reproductive health. Media development utilized the analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate (ADDIE) model. The respondents in this study were parents of adolescents aged 10–14 years, comprising 10 parents in the small group evaluation, 20 in the field evaluation, and 10 in the implementation stage. The effectiveness of the media was tested through pretests and posttests. Using a questionnaire tested for validity and reliability, the data were collected. The effectiveness of the media was analyzed using N-gain. The results revealed that the seven audiovisual media were suitable for use. At the implementation stage, the N-gain value was 0.55, indicating that the video effectively increased parents’ knowledge of reproductive health. Developing audiovisual media on reproductive health is effective for parents. To ensure parents truly grasp reproductive health information, health institutions should consider creating interactive audiovisual resources. This format would make the material more accessible and comprehensible.

Abstract

Adolescent health problems such as stunting, attempted suicide, and tobacco use in Indonesia require attention. To address these challenges, the School Health Unit Program, a school-based health initiative, aims to improve student health and academic achievement. This study examined the relationship between human resources, teachers’ knowledge, facilities and infrastructure, financial resources, and the planning process for implementing the School Health Unit Program in junior high schools in Boyolali District, Indonesia. A cross-sectional design was utilized, involving 50 junior high school teachers responsible for the School Health Unit as respondents, with data collected through structured questionnaires. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that financial resources (p-value = 0.001; Exp(B) = 12.93; CI = 2.878–58.060) and teachers’ knowledge (p-value = 0.028; Exp(B) = 6.67; CI = 1.230–36.117) were related to School Health Unit implementation. Schools with poor financial resources were over 12 times more likely, and teachers with a poor level of knowledge were approximately 6 times more likely, to implement the School Health Unit Program suboptimally. It is recommended that teachers participate in training programs, effective financial planning, and resource management to improve their capacity to manage the program more effectively.
