Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of problem-based learning on the creative thinking skills of 11th-grade students at SMA Negeri 10 Makassar in physics lessons. The research method used is quantitative with a posttest-only control design. The research sample consisted of 28 students divided into two groups: one taught using problem-based learning and the other using a conventional model. The instrument used was an essay test on creative thinking skills, validated using the Gregory test. The results showed that students taught with problem-based learning had an average score of 32.14, while those taught with the conventional model had an average score of 31.00. Inferential analysis showed no significant difference in creative thinking skills between students taught using problem-based learning and those taught using the conventional model. However, problem-based learning still encourages students to actively engage in learning and helps them develop creative thinking skills, which are essential for solving various physics problems in everyday life.

Abstract

Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey (CLASS) is an instrument designed to explore students' perceptions of physics and assess how closely their beliefs correspond with those of professional physicists. Before the development of CLASS, several similar instruments were developed in the field of Physics Education such as the Maryland Physics Expectation (MPEX), Views About Science Survey (VASS), and Epistemological Beliefs Assessment for Physical Science (EBAPS). Adams et al. developed CLASS in 2006 by evaluating these three instruments. Since then, CLASS has been extensively studied for its use in research, especially in the field of Physics Education, and has also been applied in other fields and translated into several languages. As a form of community strengthening, this article attempts to report the research findings related to the use of the CLASS instrument that has been translated into Indonesian. A total of 292 undergraduate students were sampled in this study, who are students from four universities. The respondents in this study were students who had enrolled in the Fundamental of Physics course. The data obtained were analysed with Item Response Theory (IRT) for the polytomous scale. There are Grade Response Model (GRM), Partial Credit Model (PCM), Rating Scale Model (RSM), and Generalized Partial Credit Model (GPCM). The research results show that among the four models of approach and based on the criteria used, the model considered most suitable is GRM. The research also shows that the number of items declared consistent with the model does not cover all CLASS items but rather some items. This finding indicates that further exploration is needed regarding the CLASS instrument items, especially in the Indonesian version. The findings of this study also add to the wealth of knowledge related to the quality assessment of the CLASS instrument through the modern test theory approach (IRT). Thus, the CLASS instrument can be regarded as a standard instrument and can be used globally across various populations.

Abstract

In learning physic, students might experience learning difficulties that could hinder the knowledge transfer and the efficiency of the learning. It's caused by a limited number of instruments that are valid to measure students' learning difficulty in physical education. Therefore, the current research aims to validate physic learning difficulty scale for secondary school students in Indonesia. This research used a survey design. The current research participants were 388 students in Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia. Two procedures were used to analyse the data: exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results show that EFA with comprehensive techniques that compromise parallel analysis yielded a 3-factor solution: environment factor, metacognitive factor and emotional factor. The three factors solution was confirmed through CFA with the value: Chi Square=1.922, goodness of fit index (GFI)=.936, adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI)=.913, Tucker–Lewis index (TLI)=.895, comparative fit index (CFI)=.913, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA)=.049, and Standardized Root Mean Residual (SRMR)=.079. Therefore, based on psychometric analysis, the scale is valid and reliable to be used in measuring students physic learning difficulty of Indonesian secondary school students. The current research’s novelty is that it provides a valid and reliable instrument to measure student`s difficulty in physic education. The use of the current instrument can ensure the accuracy, reliability, and credibility of research related to student difficulty in physic education.
