Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the influence of action-based educational tourism on bridging the "knowledge-action gap" within environmental education. The research aims to evaluate how motivation, awareness, knowledge, and active participation through the "SatuBumi River Cleanup" program shape the pro-environmental behavior (PEB) of high school and university students. Using a quantitative-explanatory method with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), data were collected from 206 respondents via purposive sampling. The results reveal that environmental motivation (beta = 0.403) and active participation (beta = 0.279) are the primary drivers of sustainable behavioral change, while environmental knowledge showed no statistical significance (beta = 0.021). The novelty of this research lies in the integration of Richards’ 3S storytelling framework with physical waste mitigation, transforming polluted river ecosystems into "living laboratories" for socio-ecological transformation. This study challenges the traditional information-delivery paradigm by demonstrating that emotional resonance and physical agency are more effective than theoretical instruction. The implication for educational science suggests a shift toward experiential, narrative-driven pedagogy to foster genuine ecological stewardship. By providing empirical evidence of how immersive environments catalyze behavioral shifts, this research contributes to the broader development of science in educational methodology, advocating for the institutionalization of action-based learning to achieve long-term sustainability goals.

Abstract

The emergence of virtual reference services in library institutions is inseparable from the developments in information technology that have occurred in society over the last few decades. The purpose of this study is to determine librarian competencies in providing virtual reference services. Virtual reference service itself is defined as a service that utilizes information technology and various social media platforms to fulfill users' information needs, allowing them to seek information sources without having to physically visit the library. Based on the results of the study, it was revealed that librarians must possess two main competencies: 1) professional competence, such as knowledge and skills in using information technology, utilizing information sources, and accessing resources to serve users; and 2) personal competence, which relates to communication skills, attitudes, and insights possessed by reference librarians. To achieve an optimal virtual reference service, these two competencies must be an integral part of reference librarians.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) analyzes research trends in Educational Tourism (2019–2024) by applying Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) framework. The study specifically investigates how the Educational Tourism approach supports the principles of Sustainable Tourism and its positioning in addressing the complex issue of Climate Change. Methodology: The research employed an SLR supported by bibliometric analysis and thematic synthesis of 447 Scopus-indexed articles. The ELT framework (comprising Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, and Active Experimentation) was used as a conceptual lens to test the balance of thematic focus across the literature. Main Findings: The analysis revealed a systemic imbalance within the literature. While the Abstract Conceptualization and Concrete Experience stages show strong documentation, the Reflective Observation is the most minimally discussed theme (65.55%). This gap indicates that current research tends to bypass the critical evaluation process, thus failing to methodologically validate the internal mechanism required to link direct experience to lasting sustainable behavior. This methodological weakness hinders the sector's ability to effectively tackle complex, large-scale issues like Climate Change and Environmental Protection. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study contributes by being the first to systematically apply the ELT framework to diagnose the thematic maturity of Educational Tourism, explicitly identifying Reflective Observation as the most critical theoretical and methodological gap.
