Abstract

Fishing communities in Indonesia continue to face structural challenges such as weak institutions, limited technical capacity, and restricted market access. This study analyzes a community empowerment program implemented through institutional strengthening, skills development, and digital marketing in the Bunda Saiyo Culinary Tourism Group in Pesisir Selatan Regency. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document reviews. The results indicate notable progress in four key dimensions: (1) institutional strengthening, evidenced by a clearer organizational structure and increased member participation (up by 65%); (2) technical skills, reflected in a 45% increase in product diversification and improved quality standards; (3) marketing, through the adoption of digital platforms that expanded market reach by approximately 40%; and (4) entrepreneurship, demonstrated by members’ higher initiative and the creation of new business ideas. These changes have contributed to an estimated 35–50% rise in monthly turnover and enhanced household income stability. However, limited access to capital and lingering pandemic effects remain constraints. The findings highlight that sustainable empowerment of fishing groups requires an integrated, multi-dimensional strategy combining institutional, technical, and market-based interventions.

Abstract

Vegetables play an important role in human health; However, its ability to accumulate heavy metals poses a potential public health risk. Water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica), one of the leafy vegetables most commonly consumed by Indonesian people, is known for its phytoremediation capacity, which allows the absorption of heavy metals from contaminated environments. This study aims to identify and compare the concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and copper (Cu) in Water spinach sold in traditional markets and supermarkets in Palembang City. A descriptive quantitative study with a laboratory-based approach will be conducted in October 2024. Samples of Water spinach leaves and stems were collected using random sampling and analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) at the Palembang City Standardization and Industrial Services Center. The results showed that the concentration of Pb and Cd in the leaves and stems of both types of markets was below the permissible limit. In contrast, the concentration of Cu in Water spinach leaves from both markets exceeded the recommended safety threshold, while the concentration in the stem remained within acceptable limits. These findings show that although Water spinach sold in Palembang is generally safe to consume due to Pb and Cd contamination, the Cu levels in Water spinach can cause potential long-term health problems. Continuous monitoring and improved food safety control along the production and distribution chain are highly recommended. Steaming and bleaching techniques are a solution in processing Water spinach that is safe for consumption.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the integration of local wisdom into regional policies, particularly concerning the strengthening of herbal medicine in Surakarta City. As a city with a strong Javanese cultural heritage, Surakarta holds significant potential in developing traditional herbal medicine rooted in local values and empirical community practices. The research method employed is library research, involving an in-depth review of academic literature, regional regulations, and relevant policy documents. The analysis was conducted qualitatively using a descriptive-analytical approach to identify patterns of integration between local wisdom, traditional health systems, and regional government policies. The findings indicate that the success of strengthening herbal medicine is strongly influenced by the synergy between the preservation of local knowledge, regulatory support, and partnerships among traditional practitioners, academics, and government institutions. Moreover, the integration of local wisdom into regional policy not only contributes to local economic development but also enhances community health independence. This study emphasizes the importance of culturally grounded yet innovative policies in addressing the health needs of modern society.
