Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Crossword Puzzle learning media on students’ learning outcomes in the IPAS subject for fourth-grade students at SD Karuna Dipa Palu. This research employed a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 17 students. Data were collected through observation and a multiple-choice test consisting of 25 items. The test instrument was validated using Pearson correlation analysis and its reliability was measured using Cronbach’s Alpha, yielding a score of 0.920, which indicates a highly reliable instrument. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, the N-Gain test, and hypothesis testing using the Paired Sample T-test with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics version 27. The results showed an increase in the average score from 62.59 in the pretest to 83.06 in the posttest. The N-Gain score of 0.6055 falls into the moderate category, indicating that the Crossword Puzzle media is fairly effective. The result of the Paired Sample T-test showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, which led to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H₀) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ), indicating that the use of Crossword Puzzle in classroom learning has a significant effect on students’ learning outcomes. It can therefore be concluded that the use of this medium is effective in improving learning outcomes in IPAS and can be recommended as an interactive and enjoyable alternative learning media for elementary school students.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between learning motivation and the learning outcomes of third-grade students in the Science subject at SDN Inpres 1 Birobuli. The research employed a descriptive method with a quantitative approach, involving total sampling of all 26 third-grade students. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The descriptive analysis showed that 58% of students strongly agreed with the learning motivation statements, while 42% agreed. However, the findings indicated that learning motivation levels did not consistently correspond with students' academic performance. Some students with high motivation achieved moderate learning outcomes, while others with moderate motivation attained high academic results. Inferential analysis revealed that the calculated correlation coefficient (r = 0.072) was lower than the critical value in the r-table, leading to the acceptance of the null hypothesis (Ho) and the rejection of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). It can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between learning motivation and the learning outcomes of third-grade students in the Science subject at SDN Inpres 1 Birobuli. This suggests that learning motivation alone does not directly influence academic performance in this study context.

Abstract

Reading proficiency represents a fundamental cornerstone of academic success, particularly in Indonesian education where PISA assessments reveal significant literacy challenges. This study examined the influence of reading interest on Indonesian language learning achievement among elementary students, addressing gaps in understanding motivational factors within resource-constrained educational contexts. A quantitative correlational design was employed with 20 fourth-grade students at SD Inpres 2 Tondo during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through a validated 20-item reading interest questionnaire (KR-20 reliability ≥ 0.70), systematic classroom observations, and official report card documentation. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between reading interest and academic achievement. Students demonstrated moderate reading interest levels (M = 15.2, SD = 2.85) and good academic performance (M = 82.4, SD = 5.6). The analysis revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between reading interest and Indonesian language achievement (r = 0.625, p < 0.05), indicating a moderate to strong relationship. Approximately 39% of the variance in academic achievement was attributable to reading interest levels. School environmental support was consistently high (95% positive responses), while home support remained limited (50-55% positive responses). The findings support theoretical frameworks linking reading motivation to academic outcomes and align with previous Indonesian studies. Results suggest that targeted interventions enhancing reading interest could significantly improve Indonesian language learning achievement, particularly relevant given Indonesia's declining PISA performance and ongoing literacy challenges.

Abstract

Effective alignment between instructional media and student learning styles represents a critical challenge in elementary education, yet limited empirical evidence exists regarding systematic teacher strategies for implementing such alignment in classroom practice. This descriptive qualitative study investigated teacher strategies for aligning instructional media with Grade 4 student learning styles at SD Inpres 1 Tondo, Palu, Indonesia. Data were collected from 24 students and one classroom teacher through VARK-based questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, systematic classroom observations, and document analysis. Learning style distributions were analyzed descriptively, while teacher strategies and implementation effectiveness were examined using thematic analysis following Miles and Huberman's framework. Visual learners comprised 58.3% of students, followed by combined visual-auditory preferences (16.7%), auditory learners (12.5%), multimodal learners (8.3%), and kinesthetic learners (4.2%). Three primary teacher strategies emerged: comprehensive diagnostic assessment of learning styles, systematic integration of multimodal media (projectors, textbooks, environmental resources), and adaptive content delivery based on subject matter and student responses. Classroom observations revealed that multimodal approaches achieved 91% student engagement compared to 82% for single-modality instruction, with kinesthetic learners showing particular improvement during hands-on activities.  The findings demonstrate that effective media alignment depends on multimodal integration rather than rigid matching of single media types to individual learning preferences. Results support multimedia learning theory while extending understanding of practical implementation strategies in resource-constrained contexts. The study contributes evidence-based approaches for teacher professional development and differentiated instruction practices, emphasizing the importance of systematic diagnostic assessment and flexible pedagogical adaptation.
