Abstract

Abstract

Character education plays an important role in shaping the personalities of elementary school students. This study aims to analyze the role of teachers in shaping the character of fourth-grade students at SDN Ululere. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that teachers play the role of educators, teachers, and coaches in shaping students' character. As educators, teachers instill religious values and responsibility through habitual prayer, exemplary behavior, and routine activities such as class duty. As teachers, teachers integrate character values into learning through group discussions and differentiated learning, emphasizing honesty, cooperation, and responsibility. As coaches, teachers provide personal guidance, routine religious activities, and training in student independence. From this character-building process, four main characters are strengthened, namely religious, honest, independent, and responsible. This study confirms that character building in students requires a collaborative approach between teachers, schools, and parents in a consistent and sustainable manner.

Abstract

Low student learning engagement in interdisciplinary Science and Social Studies Learning (Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial/IPAS) instruction remains a persistent challenge in Indonesian elementary education, particularly under the Merdeka Curriculum framework that demands active, student-centered participation. This study examined the effect of the Talking Stick learning model assisted by Question Box media on student learning engagement among 16 fifth-grade students at SDN Tindaki, Parigi Moutong Regency. A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a One Group Pretest-Posttest approach was employed. Data were collected using a learning engagement questionnaire and an observation sheet, measuring four behavioral indicators: enthusiasm for participation, willingness to ask questions, courage to answer, and confidence in presenting understanding. Instrument validity was confirmed through Pearson Product Moment correlation, and reliability through Cronbach's Alpha. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a Paired Sample t-test via SPSS version 30. The results showed a significant increase in mean engagement scores from 58.44 (pretest) to 62.00 (posttest), with a Paired Sample t-test yielding p = 0.003 (p < 0.05). All four behavioral indicators improved, with the greatest gains recorded for enthusiasm for participation (+7.8%) and courage to present understanding (+7.5%). These findings confirm that the Talking Stick–Question Box combination is an effective, accessible strategy for fostering behavioral engagement in elementary IPAS learning and warrants broader adoption within the Merdeka Curriculum context.

Abstract

Arts, Culture, and Crafts (SBdP) education in rural Indonesian elementary schools faces persistent challenges due to reliance on conventional lecture-based instruction, resulting in suboptimal student engagement and learning outcomes. Audio-visual media offers potential pedagogical advantages through dual-channel information processing, yet empirical evidence regarding its effectiveness in elementary arts education remains limited. This study investigated the effect of audio-visual media on second-grade students' learning outcomes in SBdP at Parigimpu'u Public Elementary School. A quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control groups was employed, involving nine students divided into experimental (n=5) and control (n=4) groups. The experimental group received instruction incorporating audio-visual media demonstrating piggy bank construction techniques, while the control group received conventional instruction. Performance-based assessments measuring accuracy, neatness, creativity, and timeliness were administered as pretest and posttest. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent samples t-test. The experimental group achieved significantly higher posttest scores (M=95.83, SD=2.95) compared to the control group (M=85.94, SD=6.99), with statistical analysis confirming significance (t=2.975, p<0.05). All experimental group students surpassed the minimum passing threshold, demonstrating substantial improvement from baseline. Audio-visual media significantly enhances learning outcomes in elementary SBdP education by facilitating concrete visualization, reducing cognitive load, and promoting active engagement, supporting its integration into arts curricula particularly in resource-constrained rural schools.

Abstract

Reading comprehension remains a persistent challenge in elementary education, with students frequently struggling to organize textual information and identify main ideas. This study investigated the effectiveness of mind mapping strategies in enhancing reading comprehension among fifth-grade students. Employing a classroom action research design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, this study involved 33 fifth-grade students at SD Inpres 3 Tondo across two iterative cycles. Data were collected through observation sheets for teacher and student activities, reading comprehension rubrics, and documentation. Analysis combined descriptive statistics for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative observations. Reading comprehension performance improved significantly from 63% (sufficient category) in Cycle I to 79% (good category) in Cycle II, representing a 16-percentage-point increase. Student engagement increased from 65% to 91%, while teacher effectiveness improved from 89% to 95%. An unexpected finding revealed that struggling readers benefited disproportionately from the intervention, showing 24-percentage-point gains compared to 12-percentage-point improvements among higher-performing students. The findings support dual coding theory and schema theory, demonstrating that visual-verbal integration through mind mapping facilitates deeper cognitive processing. Mind mapping proved effective as an accessible, low-cost intervention that transforms comprehension from an invisible individual activity into a visible collaborative process, with implications for literacy instruction in resource-constrained contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of the Full Day School policy on the development of religious character among fifth-grade students at SD Islam Al-Hidayah Besusu. The implementation of Full Day School, which operates from 07.00 to 15.00, provides extended learning time that integrates academic activities with routine religious practices, including dhuha prayer, zuhur prayer in congregation, daily supplications, and Qur’an recitation. This qualitative descriptive research involved the principal, classroom teachers, parents, and seven fifth-grade students as informants. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Full Day School contributes positively to students’ religious character development. Students show increased discipline in performing worship, politeness, honesty, responsibility, and empathy toward peers. Daily routines and teacher modeling play a significant role in strengthening these values. Social activities such as class duties, teamwork, and maintaining cleanliness further enhance students’ sense of responsibility and cooperation. Although some challenges emerge, such as student fatigue due to long school hours, these do not diminish the overall positive impact when balanced with engaging learning methods and parental support at home. In conclusion, the Full Day School system effectively fosters religious character formation through structured routines, prolonged interaction with teachers, and consistent religious habituation, making it a strategic approach to strengthening student character in elementary education.
