Abstract

Abstract Background: Both types of cigarettes (traditional and electronic) have negative health effects, and public interest remains high. Based on several studies, antioxidants are known to counteract the effects of ROS caused by cigarettes. One of them is frangipani (Plumeria alba), which has phenols and flavonoids. Objective: To find out the antioxidant effects of frangipani flower extract on test animals exposed to cigarette and vape smoke. Methods: An experimental method with a randomized post-test control group design was used in this study. The sample consists of healthy male Wistar rats divided into five sample groups, which received intervention for a 3-week duration. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by post hoc tests. Results: This study found that both cigarettes and vaping lowered SOD levels (P1 and P2 groups; 3.381 and 4.462 ng/mL). Meanwhile, the groups with frangipani flower extract, who were exposed to cigarettes and vaping, had a higher level of SOD (P3 and P4; 6.999 and 8.681 ng/mL).Conclusions: The administration of frangipani flower extract containing antioxidants has a positive effect on SOD levels.

Abstract

Background: Alzheimer Disease remains the most prevalent cause of dementia worldwide, representing a major and escalating global health challenge. Objective: This study aims to examine the role of short chain fatty acids in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer Disease within the framework of the microbiota gut brain axis. Methods: The research employed a qualitative design with a descriptive approach through a narrative literature study. Data were collected through systematic searches of peer reviewed scientific articles published between 2015 and 2026, focusing on gut microbiota dysbiosis, short chain fatty acids, neuroinflammation, amyloid pathology, and cognitive decline in Alzheimer Disease. Document analysis was conducted using thematic identification, data reduction, conceptual categorization, and inductive interpretation to generate a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence. Results: The findings indicate that Alzheimer Disease is consistently associated with reduced abundance of short chain fatty acid producing bacteria and altered circulating and fecal short chain fatty acid profiles, which are linked to impaired blood brain barrier integrity, microglial activation, increased neuroinflammation, amyloid beta accumulation, and tau pathology. Mechanistic insights demonstrate that short chain fatty acids regulate inflammatory signaling pathways, epigenetic modulation, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and metabolic homeostasis. Conclusion: In conclusion, short chain fatty acids function as key metabolic mediators in Alzheimer Disease and represent promising targets for preventive and therapeutic strategies, contributing to a systems biology perspective and supporting microbiome based precision approaches in cognitive health management.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are serious orthopedic conditions that require long-term recovery and significant costs. This study aimed to assess the risk of decreased knee function among ACL injury survivors in the Indonesian ACL community. Methods: This study used a prospective observational cohort design with a population of all members of the Indonesian ACL community who experienced ACL injury. The primary outcome of this study was a decrease in knee function was measured using the Lysholm knee score. We calculated univariate and multivariate analyses using logistic regression for each variable. Results: The results showed that female gender and time from injury to surgery were significant factors that influenced poor knee function after ACL reconstruction. Women had a significantly higher risk (odd ratio (OR) = 15.28; adjusted OR (AOR) = 23.47; p-value < 0.010). In addition, the time between injury and surgery significantly affected postoperative knee function (AOR = 1.05; p-value = 0.049). Other factors such as age and body mass index did not show significant associations in either univariate or multivariate analyses. Conclusion: This study confirmed that female gender and time from injury to surgery were important factors influencing poor knee function after ACL reconstruction. Timely intervention and focused rehabilitation programs are key steps to improve patient functional outcomes.
