Abstract

The topic of curved surface solids, especially the surface area of a sphere, is essential for solving contextual mathematical problems. However, limited research has examined students’ difficulties in this area, particularly using Newman's Error Analysis (NEA). This qualitative study aims to identify and analyze students’ errors in solving surface area problems of spheres through NEA. Five 9th-grade students from a public junior high school in Cirebon were selected via purposive sampling. Data were collected through tests and interviews, then analyzed descriptively based on Newman's stages. Triangulation and member checking ensured data validity. Results show that the most frequent errors occurred in the final answer stage, where students failed to reach the correct solution. Errors in process skills were also significant—students could choose the correct formula but struggled with calculations. These findings suggest a need for improved instructional strategies that emphasize conceptual understanding and process fluency. Interactive teaching, visual aids, and targeted practice can help students better comprehend spherical geometry. The study underscores the importance of addressing specific learning obstacles to enhance students’ mathematical problem-solving skills.

Abstract

Instructional planning is widely recognised as essential for effective teaching, yet prospective teachers often lack the knowledge, experience, and resources to design context-responsive lessons. Research on lesson planning has predominantly focused on in-service teachers, leaving limited insight into the multidimensional barriers teacher candidates face in Indonesian EFL contexts, particularly within private universities. This qualitative case study addresses this gap by examining two guiding questions: (1) What factors hinder prospective teachers in designing instructional plans? Moreover, (2) What solutions can effectively address these barriers? Three purposively selected eighth-semester students from the English Language Education Study Program at a private university in Indonesia were studied based on scaffolding principles. Data were triangulated through open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, and then analysed thematically with member checking to ensure trustworthiness. Findings highlight three interconnected challenges: limited mastery of pedagogical vocabulary and authentic material development, misalignment between methods and materials, and a persistent gap between theoretical coursework and practical classroom dynamics. Proposed solutions include intensive tiered mentoring by lecturers and supervising teachers, integration of authentic locally relevant materials, and real-case-based lesson design workshops. These findings contribute to teacher education research by offering evidence-based recommendations for curriculum reform and practicum design that strengthen prospective teachers’ competence in creating meaningful and contextually grounded lesson plans.

Abstract

This research aims to develop mathematics learning media called ETNOSIKA-AR, which combines visual-interactive concepts with the local cultural values of the Kaliwadas Ancient Well Site in circular materials to improve students' understanding of concepts. Media development is carried out based on the ADDIE model, consists of five systematic stages: needs analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. This research was conducted in June and involved high school students in class X in Cirebon. The validation results by three experts show that this media is included in the very valid category, with percentages of 94.7%, 97.9%, and 96.8%, respectively. A practicality test was conducted involving 31 high school students, and the results showed that 77% of students stated that this medium was practical, and 13% said it was very practical. On the other hand, only 10% consider it less valuable. The analysis showed that 77.42% of students were in the high N-Gain category, and 22.58% were in the medium category, with no students in the low category, with an average N-Gain score of 0.7762. These findings show that ETNOSIKA-AR media effectively improve understanding of circular matter. This media also succeeds in presenting interesting and meaningful learning by integrating cultural and technological aspects.
