Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic alters many aspects of everyday life that we have grown accustomed to. The enactment of various new policies to curb the spread of the disease, i.e., social distancing, work and study from home, restrictions on large-scale activities and restriction in travelling, compel each one of us to adjust. Not to mention the fear of being infected with COVID-19. These conditions led to various psychological problems such as anxiety, low hope, and negative emotions. Efforts to improve people’s mental health are urgently needed. One such step is to increase one’s understanding of self-management in facing psychological problems due to COVID-19. This study aims to improve the community’s mental health, namely the residents of Blotan hamlet during the COVID-19 pandemic through online self-management psychoeducation. To test the effectiveness of psychoeducation, this study used a one-group pre and post-test design. A total of 31 subjects participated in the activity in full. We can infer the effectivity through the anxiety score, hope, and positive emotions on the pre and post-test measurements. The results found that self-managed psychoeducation facing psychological problems during the pandemic significantly increased positive emotions (t = -2,753, df = 30, and p .05). As for the measurement of anxiety and hope, there was no significant change due to the subject’s anxiety score and hope were already in the medium category.

Abstract

Empathy, a moral emotion that enables individuals to understand and respond to others' emotions, is essential for fostering positive behavior and preventing harm. Storytelling, particularly folklore, can effectively develop empathy in children by immersing them in relatable narratives that encourage empathetic responses and social-emotional skills. This research aims to assess the impact of folklore as a storytelling method on children's behavior in kindergarten. The research used a quantitative method. Accordingly, this experimental research employed a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design with six treatments, with each experimental group and control group consisting of 10 children. This study analyzed empathy behavior data collected through observations using Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed that the pretest score for the experimental class was 15.50. After the treatment, the score increased to 28.70. In comparison, the control class had a pretest score of 16.10 and a posttest score of 16.90. The Wilcoxon test resulted in an Asymp.Sig (2-tailed) value = 0.005. The hypothesis test conducted resulted in a significant value of 0.005, which meant Ho was rejected (p 0.05). This study found that there was an increase in the use of storytelling because it can foster children's imagination and help children better understand the message in the story. This research is expected to assist other schools in addressing the problems experienced by students.

Abstract

A sense of school belonging that tends to be low has an impact on problematic behavior at school, so effective psychological intervention is needed. One form of intervention carried out is gratitude intervention. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of gratitude interventions in increasing the sense of school belonging of high school students. This study uses a quantitative approach with the type of experimental research, and the design used is a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design. The research was conducted on students of SMA Negeri 5 Soppeng with 34 students. The determination of research participants was using the purposive sampling technique. Data were obtained by filling out the Psychological Sense of School Membership (PSSM) scale before and after the gratitude intervention. The validity of the PSSM scale was calculated using the Aiken's V test and obtained a coefficient of 0.88, while the reliability test used Cronbach's Alfa, with a reliability coefficient value of 0.86. The data analysis technique uses the N-Gain score test. The results showed that the average score of sense of school belonging before the intervention was 40.15, while after the intervention it increased to 73.5, the results of the hypothesis test using the difference index (N Gain Score) recorded an increase of 55.9. Thus, the hypothesis in this study is accepted, which means that gratitude interventions in schools are quite effective in increasing the sense of school belonging of high school students.

Abstract

Concerning the Indonesian government's endeavors to safeguard Indonesia's standardized language and national language, numerous initiatives have been undertaken to uphold the disposition and consciousness of the Indonesian youth towards the language since they are the future custodians of the nation. This paper aims to present the psychometric features of the modified instrument to assess the extent of critical language awareness among undergraduate Indonesian students majoring in English. The adaptation process has six steps: translation, synthesis within the target culture, back translation, committee review, pretesting using 202 undergraduate students, and the final version of reviewers. The revised measure retains three variables: factor 1, which encompasses language variance, language prejudice, and language hegemony; factor 2, which includes bilingualism (Bil), Indonesia-English (Ind-Eng), and code-switching (CS); and factor 3, which pertains to language maintenance (LM). The customized critical language awareness measure for English students has been determined to possess both content and construct validity, establishing its validity and reliability. As mentioned earlier, this instrument can assess the level of students’ critical language awareness in English as foreign language (EFL) countries.

Abstract

The combination of high job demands and low resources increases stress among employees, therefore organizations must ensure an appropriate workload. High job demands can be alleviated by maximizing job resources by recruiting competent, emotionally committed employees who are willing to share knowledge within the organization. This current study aims to examine the direct effects and the mediating role of work engagement on employee performance. The variables in this study were assessed through the utilization of adapted instruments, namely the Three Component Model (TCM) questionnaire for employee commitment, competencies adapted from occupational expertise and self-competence instruments, the UTRECHT Work Engagement Scale (UWES) questionnaire for work engagement, NASA TLX for mental workload, and Performance Instrument for employee performance. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving civil servants (ASN) in Tasikmalaya with a total of 243 respondents (Male = 51.4%, Female = 48.6%). Descriptive data analysis was conducted using Stata/MP 17.0, while hypothesis testing employed Structural Equation Modeling Partial Least Squares (SEMPLS). The findings indicate that most research hypotheses are accepted, particularly the influence of competence and commitment on work engagement, which validates previous research findings. Only commitment and mental workload do not have direct effects on performance. These findings serve as a reference for Human Resource Management (HRM) practitioners to develop human resources through training and development initiatives, thereby enhancing work engagement and subsequently improving employee performance productivity.

Abstract

Hope plays an important role in individuals’ attempts to overcome various problems in a positive way and with positive results. This study aims to examine the effect of parent-child attachment on the existence of hope. The research method involved a quantitative approach. The accidental sampling technique was used to determine the sample and identified 400 adolescents consisting of junior and senior high school students aged 12-19 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Parent-child attachment was measured using the Parental Bonding Instrument, while expectation was measured using Snyder's Hope Scale. The data were analyzed using linear regression to predict the relationship between parent and child attachment and expectations. The results show that warm and loving care from the father (B = 0.37, p < .001] and the mother (B = 0.47, p < .001], as well as the provision of autonomy by the father (B = 0.52, p < .001] and mother (B = 0.38, p <.01] proved to be predictors of adolescent expectations, while over-protection from the father (B = 0.03, p> .05]) and the mother (B = -0.18, p> .05) were not predictors of the existence of hope. The implications of the research results could serve as a reference for the parenting practice and guidance to adolescents both in the contexts of family and school education.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to evaluate the validity and reliability of the career maturity scale. The career maturity scale is designed to collect research data on the level of career maturity in high school students. It is consists of 12 statement items tailored to the constructs of career maturity: career confidence, uncertainty of career choice, and career knowledge. The results of confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the three constructs of model was well fit (p-vales= 0.50; RMSEA= 0.00; NFI= 0.99; CFI=1.00; GFI=0.99; AGFI=0.98). Further, seven out of 12 statement items on career maturity scale proved valid (standardized loading ranged from 0.52 to 0.72; t-values ranged from 8.08 to 12.25) and two of the three constructs of career maturity scale are reliable (KPK=0.68; PTK=0.70). This shows that the scale of career maturity can still be used as an instrument for data collection and assessment tools.

Abstract

The primary objective of this research was to investigate the influence of storytelling as a pedagogical approach on the development of empathy in a group of bilingual kindergarten students. To achieve this, an experimental research design was employed, utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest comparative methodology. The study involved 12 bilingual kindergarten students; all of them were part of the experimental group. An initial examination of descriptive statistical data revealed that the average pretest score was 43.08, which increased to 45.00 in the post-test, indicating a notable improvement in the student's scores. Further statistical analysis, specifically the Wilcoxon test, confirmed the significance of the impact of storytelling on the students' empathy levels. The test resulted in a significance value of p = 0.002 (p < 0.01), providing compelling evidence that storytelling as a teaching method had a substantial and positive effect on enhancing empathy in bilingual kindergarten students. These findings suggest that incorporating storytelling into the curriculum can be a valuable tool in nurturing empathy in young learners, with potential implications for enhancing their social and emotional development.
