Abstract

The primary objective of this research was to investigate the influence of storytelling as a pedagogical approach on the development of empathy in a group of bilingual kindergarten students. To achieve this, an experimental research design was employed, utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest comparative methodology. The study involved 12 bilingual kindergarten students; all of them were part of the experimental group. An initial examination of descriptive statistical data revealed that the average pretest score was 43.08, which increased to 45.00 in the post-test, indicating a notable improvement in the student's scores. Further statistical analysis, specifically the Wilcoxon test, confirmed the significance of the impact of storytelling on the students' empathy levels. The test resulted in a significance value of p = 0.002 (p < 0.01), providing compelling evidence that storytelling as a teaching method had a substantial and positive effect on enhancing empathy in bilingual kindergarten students. These findings suggest that incorporating storytelling into the curriculum can be a valuable tool in nurturing empathy in young learners, with potential implications for enhancing their social and emotional development. Abstract

This study aimed to test the construct of children’s happiness based on situations and parties that make children happy. The instrument is developed based on previous qualitative research in the form of multiple choices statements using smiling emoticons of different sizes. The subjects were 88 children aged 4-6 years in Sleman, Yogyakarta. Results of exploratory factor analysis show that the antecedent of children’s happiness based on situations is composed of eight factors--doing useful activities, fun activities, entertaining situations, getting attention/things liked, family gathering, and drawing. The parties who play a role in children's happiness are their closest parties (mother, siblings, and God), their closest surrounding environment (father and friends), and other close environment outside nuclear family. Our findings can be used as a reference to measure children's happiness in the Indonesian context so that strategies can be designed to increase children's happiness through effective policies, educational practices, and parenting.

Abstract

Background Reading culture has an important role in developing students' critical thinking skills, as reading activities can broaden their horizons and improve their analytical skills. By reading regularly, students can train their brains to think more sharply and structurally, thus improving the quality of their critical thinking. This study aims to collect empirical evidence or facts regarding the relationship between reading culture and critical thinking skills. The participants in this study were 77 students. This research design uses a quantitative approach with a correlational method. Data analysis was done using the Pearson correlation test. The results showed a highly significant relationship with a positive correlation level of 0.976, a very strong correlation, and a 95% confidence interval between 0.80 and 1.000. This study concludes that reading culture and students' critical thinking skills have a positive and significant relationship. The findings indicate that improving reading culture among students can contribute to developing their critical thinking skills, which has important implications for educational practices in improving the quality of learning in secondary schools.

Abstract

This study  aimed to examine the effectiveness of positive psychological interventions in enhancing resilience among children of divorced parents in a rural, low-education context. A qualitative case study was conducted with a 13-year-old male participant from North Bengkulu, Indonesia, who had experienced parental divorce since early childhood. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The interventions included gratitude journaling, hope building, positive self-affirmation, and enhancement of social relationships. Findings demonstrated improvements in resilience across four domains: (1) emotional regulation, shifting from destructive to adaptive emotional expression; (2) optimism, moving from pessimism toward setting small academic goals; (3) self-efficacy, progressing from negative self-image to increased confidence through positive affirmation; and (4) social relationships, developing from social withdrawal to active peer engagement. These results indicate that positive psychological interventions are effective in strengthening resilience in children from divorced families. The study contributes to filling a gap in research on the application of positive psychology for children of divorced parents in rural areas, with implications for designing culturally sensitive psychological support programs.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of forgiveness therapy in enhancing self-forgiveness among women affected by parental divorce. The subject, a 26-year-old female entrepreneur, was struggling with self-blame, particularly following the trauma of her parents' divorce. The research applied the Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS) to assess self-forgiveness levels before and after a structured six-session intervention. The forgiveness therapy, based on Enright’s model, involved phases such as uncovering pain, decision to forgive, working through emotions, and deepening the process. Data collected showed a significant improvement in the client’s ability to forgive herself, as evidenced by her higher scores on the HFS after completing the therapy. The study reveals the critical role of forgiveness interventions in addressing emotional pain, particularly self-blame, in the aftermath of traumatic life events like divorce. Findings also highlight the therapeutic potential of structured forgiveness programs to improve psychological well-being and life satisfaction. This case study contributes to the growing body of literature on forgiveness therapy and its application in trauma recovery.

Abstract

The prevalence of internalizing behavior problems, namely depression, anxiety, and stress, among adolescents has increased globally. Poor levels of hope have been previously identified in a vast body of literature as one of the factors which has contributed to a large number of internalization behaviour problems . This study aimed to examine hope as a significant predictor of depression tendencies, anxiety, and stress among adolescents in Yogyakarta, Indonesia using an incidental sampling method. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DAAS-21) and the Snyder's Hope Scale were modified and validated for an online survey. Four hundred Indonesian teenagers between 12 and 21 years took part in the online poll. The data were analyzed using regression analysis to evaluate the correlations between internalizing behavioral issues and hope. Based on the regression analysis, this study found that hope had a negative correlation with stress (r = -0.16, p .01; BCa 95% CI [-0.28; 0.05]), anxiety (r = -0.20, p .01; BCa 95% CI [-0.31; 0.10), and depression (r = -0.36, p .01; BCa 95% CI [-0.45; -0.26). Furthermore, it was found that hope could predict lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in the sample (t = -3.27; B = -.13; p .01; BCa 95% CI [-.29; -.05]).

Abstract

The concept of mental workload is fully used and leads to various theoretical and methodological models. For this purpose, we are conducted in the same way as a systematic review for understanding the concept and a factor that identifies work and work situations that affect personal tasks, or mental workload field. A systematic review was obtained from scientific papers issued from 2010-to 2021. Mental workload is multidimensional, so that a conceptual definition of mental workload should therefore integrally encompass the most elementary dimensions of mental workload. In general, most factors affected mental workloads, including working environments, individual differences, temporal pressure, and task difficulty/compliance complexity. Techniques for assessing subjective workloads are popular in several studies because of their ease of use and sensitivity to workload fluctuations. The NASATLX scale is the most common subjective technique and is used in a wide range of fields. Subjective and objective measurements cannot even measure all kinds of factors that affect mental distress. The main difficulty facing researchers is establishing standardized measurements of mental workload and its normal range so that effective comparisons can be made between groups of subjects. These results can provide measurement development recommendations using three approaches: subjective, objective, and behavioral. Keywords: mental workload; measurement; workload factors
