Abstract

Silvofishery education in mangrove ecosystem management aims to integrate aquaculture with mangrove forest preservation and management, fostering a balance between human activities and environmental sustainability within mangrove ecosystems. Residents of Putri Sembilan Village, situated adjacent to the mangrove ecosystem, have the potential to enhance mangrove forest management and sustainability through silvofishery practices. This educational initiative commenced with problem identification through discussions between the community service team and the Forestry Training and Community Empowerment Unit of the Riau Provincial Environment and Forestry Service. The agreed-upon approach involved educating Putri Sembilan Rupat Utara Village residents through lectures and practical tutorials. The educational process included pre-tests, presentations, question-and-answer sessions, interactive discussions, post-tests, and concluded with field practice. The education was well-received by participants, who engaged actively throughout. A key finding was that while most Putri Sembilan Village residents utilize the mangrove ecosystem for educational ecotourism and to mitigate residential land abrasion, there remains a limited understanding of mangrove forest preservation and silvofishery utilization for mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) cultivation. Post-activity evaluation demonstrated that silvofishery education significantly improved residents' understanding of the balance between utilization and conservation. It is recommended that this educational activity be followed up with practical training and assistance in mangrove crab cultivation for community groups dedicated to preserving the Putri Sembilan Rupat Utara Village ecosystem.

Abstract

The snail silvofishery education in Pangkalan Jambi Village aims to equip mangrove management groups in combining mangrove conservation activities with the utilization of its economic value through the cultivation of Cerithidea obtusa snails, in order to create a balance of mangrove ecosystem services to improve the economy of coastal communities. The target group for this education is the “Harapan Bersama” Mangrove Management Group which is one of the fostered groups of PT. Kilang Pertamina Internasional (PT. KPI). The method used is lectures and tutorials as a result of discussions with the CSR team of PT. KPI. The implementation of education begins with the implementation of a pre-test, presentation of materials accompanied by interactive discussions and post-tests. At the end of the activity, a field review was carried out as a candidate for the silvofishery location. The result is that the implementation of this education is very interactive and gets a positive response from the target group who have long struggled to preserve and utilize the mangrove area through several activities, including planting mangrove seedlings and making abrasion prevention tools and producing mangrove products as well as a mangrove educational tourism village. However, this group does not yet know and understand this silvofishery as a form of environmentally friendly mangrove forest preservation and utilization. Post-activity evaluation has proven that this educational activity has increased the understanding of the target group to diversify their activities in the future. The implementation is to practice and assist the snail silvofishery activities in this group

Abstract

Abstract

This research was conducted for five months from May to September 2022 which is located in Sungai Apit District by taking six (6) villages as sampling locations from the eight (8) existing villages. This research was conducted for five months from May to September 2022 which is located in Sungai Apit District by taking six (6) villages as sampling locations from eight (8) existing villages. The research objective was to calculate and assess the adaptive capacity of mangrove ecosystems in Siak District, Siak Regency. Measurement of the adaptive capacity of mangrove ecosystems is carried out by analyzing six parameters, namely Mangrove Dimension Index (IDMg), Dominant Mangrove Species, Mangrove Tree Density, Number of Mangrove Species, Substrate Type, Ecosystem Distance from Settlement. The value of the adaptive capacity of mangrove ecosystems is in the range of 0.0-1.0, with five capacity categories namely "very low, low, medium, high, and very high". The results showed that the number of mangrove species found growing on the coast of Sungai Apit District was 19 species belonging to 10 families and 12 genera, distributed in the "low" category with a mangrove dimension index (IDMg) value of 0.6 (0.4<IDMg <0.8).Dominant species from the Rhizophoraceae family with a density classified as "high". The adaptive capacity of the mangrove ecosystem at the study site is classified as "high" with an adaptive capacity value of 0.67 (0.6 ≤ KPMg ≤ 0.8).

Abstract

The utilization of fisheries resources in Teluk Paman Timur Village is closely related to local customs. The rule of lubuk larangan limits the community's activities, where the community is prohibited from fishing until a specific time limit. However, changes in river flow have led to sedimentation and siltation, which affects the effectiveness of this lubuk larangan. This study aimed to assess the status of fisheries resources in Lubuk Larangan Teluk Paman Timur, Kampar Kiri District, Kampar Regency, Riau Province, using an ecosystem approach (EAFM). This research was conducted in March-May 2024 in the Lubuk Larangan Teluk Paman Timur area. The methods used in this research are qualitative and quantitative, and respondents were selected through purposive sampling with 15 people. The indicator development model used in this study refers to indicators compiled by the Directorate of Fish Resources. Indicators for each domain were converted into composite indicators through the “flag modelling” technique. Based on the analysis, the flag status for each domain in the Lubuk Larangan area of East Uncle Bay ranges from red to green. Domains with green flags include social, governance, and stakeholders. Domains with red flags are economic. Overall, the status of fisheries resource utilization in the Lubuk Larangan Teluk Paman Timur area received a yellow flag with a score of 20,359. This indicates that fisheries management in the local ecosystem has applied the principles of sustainable fisheries but is not yet optimal. Hence, a strategic plan needs to be established to optimize or improve the condition of existing domains and indicators

Abstract

Fisheries resource management based on local wisdom is passed down through generations, addressing significant challenges like over-exploitation. Teluk Paman Timur Village exemplifies this with its ‘Lubuk Larangan’ model, where specific river areas are designated for fishing prohibition, enforced by the community. This research examines the environmental conditions of water's physical-chemical parameters, the economic and social benefits of ‘Lubuk Larangan,’ and the current fisheries management status in the village. Using qualitative descriptive methods, data was gathered through observations, interviews, and water quality measurements. Results indicate that the ‘lubuk larangan’ system in Teluk Paman Timur is actively maintained. Management falls under the auspices of Ninik Mamak, POKMASWAS, and BPD, benefiting from community support. Economically, ‘Lubuk Larangan’ meets local consumption needs while providing additional income opportunities. Socially, it facilitates gatherings, cooperation, and activities during harvest seasons. Water conditions within ‘Lubuk Larangan’ are favorable, as evidenced by quality parameters like dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, clarity, current speed, depth, and TDS, which comply with class 2 water quality standards vital for sustaining fishery resources and aquatic life. This governance model, therefore, enhances both ecological health and community resilience, ensuring sustainable fisheries management
