Abstract

This study examines how Generation Z males use second accounts to negotiate gender performativity on Instagram, positioning the platform as a space for interaction, image construction, self-expression, and adaptation to dominant norms of masculinity. The study employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to explore participants’ experiences and meanings in using first and second accounts. Data were analysed through the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, while validity was ensured through source triangulation based on interviews with 10 informants and expert triangulation. The findings show that first accounts are generally used as spaces of public representation to maintain image, fulfil standards of propriety, and present a safer self before wider audiences. Second accounts function as more intimate spaces for expressing personal, emotional, daily, and hobby-related dimensions of the self. The discussion confirms that dual-account use reflects an ongoing negotiation of masculinity in contemporary digital space today

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji promosi skincare di TikTok menunjukkan bahwa konten kecantikan tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai sarana pemasaran, tetapi juga sebagai ruang pembentukan gambaran wajah ideal. Penelitian ini bertujuan menjelaskan bentuk citra kecantikan dalam promosi skincare oleh Nagita Slavina serta tanggapan audiens terhadap citra tersebut. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologis untuk memahami pengalaman dan pemaknaan audiens secara mendalam. Sumber data primer diperoleh melalui wawancara mendalam dengan lima pengguna aktif TikTok yang dipilih secara purposive, sedangkan sumber data sekunder berasal dari buku, jurnal, artikel ilmiah. Analisis data dilakukan melalui tahapan reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Keabsahan data diuji dengan triangulasi sumber melalui perbandingan hasil wawancara, dan observasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa citra kecantikan dibangun melalui tampilan kulit glowing, cerah, halus, bersih, dan terawat. Audiens memaknai tampilan tersebut sebagai gambaran kecantikan yang menarik, meyakinkan, dan ideal, meskipun pada saat yang sama juga memunculkan perbandingan diri, harapan terhadap hasil skincare, rasa percaya, serta rasa tidak aman. Pembahasan menunjukkan bahwa promosi skincare di media sosial tidak hanya menjual produk, tetapi juga membentuk standar kecantikan digital yang terus dimaknai dalam kehidupan sehari-hari oleh audiens perempuan muda di ruang digital kontemporer saat ini.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of flexing among public university students in Medan on Instagram as part of self-presentation in digital spaces. The study uses a dramaturgical perspective to understand how flexing is displayed as a form of sharing activities, experiences, and moments that reflect lifestyle and digital identity. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to explore the subjective experiences of informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, digital observation, and content documentation from students selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using a qualitative analysis model through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that flexing practices are not solely interpreted as showing off wealth or luxury, but are more commonly expressed through sharing daily activities, experiences, and selected moments on Instagram. These practices are closely related to efforts to build self-image and gain social recognition through audience responses such as likes and comments. Flexing thus becomes part of students’ self-presentation in constructing identity and negotiating social position in digital spaces.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh intensitas mengakses iklan Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) di TikTok dan Shopee terhadap minat berutang mahasiswa Ilmu Komunikasi Fakultas Ilmu Sosial Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan jenis explanatory research untuk menjelaskan hubungan sebab-akibat antar variabel. Populasi penelitian berjumlah 228 mahasiswa, dengan sampel sebanyak 70 responden yang ditentukan menggunakan rumus Slovin. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui kuesioner dengan skala Likert, sedangkan analisis data menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan inferensial, meliputi uji asumsi klasik, uji korelasi, dan regresi linier sederhana. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa intensitas mengakses iklan BNPL berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap minat berutang mahasiswa, dengan nilai signifikansi < 0,05 dan koefisien regresi sebesar 0,632. Selain itu, nilai koefisien determinasi (R²) sebesar 0,616 menunjukkan bahwa 61,6% variasi minat berutang dapat dijelaskan oleh intensitas paparan iklan. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa semakin tinggi frekuensi mahasiswa terpapar iklan BNPL, maka semakin tinggi pula kecenderungan mereka untuk berutang.

Abstract

This study examines the speech act behavior of Generation Z TikTok users in communication with their parents in Pematang Gajing Village, Simalungun Regency. The increasing use of TikTok among Indonesian Gen Z has encouraged the transfer of slang expressions, body gestures, and facial expressions from digital content into everyday face-to-face interaction, including within family communication. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using in-depth interviews and observation involving six Gen Z informants and six parents as supporting informants. Data were analysed using Austin and Searle’s speech act theory through the dimensions of locution, illocution, and perlocution. The findings reveal three patterns of intergenerational communication dynamics: semantic gaps that trigger conflict, positive adaptation that strengthens relationships, and violations of relational norms that lead to serious tension. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on rural intergenerational communication within a strong traditional cultural setting, showing that the transfer of TikTok-mediated communication styles does not merely create linguistic shifts but also reconfigures family relational norms. This study contributes to pragmatic and sociolinguistic scholarship by demonstrating that parental openness is a key variable in determining whether digital speech patterns produce conflict or relational adaptation in family communication.
