Abstract

This research examines trends and developments in the study of role play in early childhood education through a bibliometric analysis based on Scopus data. The main focus is a systematic mapping of academic literature that addresses the contribution of role-playing to children's cognitive, social-emotional and language development. The approach used was descriptive-quantitative bibliometric analysis, which included identification, screening, eligibility evaluation and inclusion of scientific publications from 2015 to 2024. A total of 42 documents (35 articles and 7 books) that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed using VOSviewer, Microsoft Excel, and Publish or Perish software. The results showed that the peak of publications occurred in 2022, before experiencing a decline in the following years. In terms of collaboration, studies were dominated by countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia, which were noted to appear most frequently in author affiliations. Thematic cluster analysis revealed several major foci with dominant keywords such as “role play,” “child language,” and “play.” In addition, a number of new keywords were found that reflect the direction of future research developments. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the scientific landscape related to role play, and can serve as an important reference for researchers, educational practitioners, and policy makers in designing play-based early childhood education interventions.

Abstract

Early childhood education in Indonesia continues to encounter significant challenges in fostering critical thinking skills, particularly in under-resourced environments with limited access to adaptive learning technologies. This study investigates the effectiveness of a digital learning model that integrates Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance critical thinking among young children. The model, called SMARP (Storytelling, Modifying, Accessible, Real-time, and Promoting), was developed using a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on the 4D model: Define, Design, Develop, and Deploy. The study involved 32 kindergarten students from TK Nada Ashobah in Surabaya, divided into two groups: Class B2 (experimental) and Class B1 (control). The experimental group used an AR–AI-based application, while the control group followed conventional instruction. Data collection included classroom observations, teacher interviews, and critical thinking pre- and post-tests. Statistical analysis using paired sample t-tests and normalized gain (N-gain) scores showed a significant improvement in the experimental group (N-gain = 0.845, categorized as high), while the control group recorded minimal gains (N-gain = 0.0015). The AR–AI model enabled immersive learning through 3D simulations, narrative interaction, and real-time feedback, which promoted observation, analysis, and decision-making. Furthermore, AI features supported personalized learning pathways, increasing student autonomy and engagement. These findings affirm the potential of AR and AI to improve foundational cognitive abilities in early childhood education. The study highlights the need for context-responsive digital pedagogy and recommends comprehensive teacher training and infrastructure support to ensure sustainability. Future research should explore the model’s scalability, long-term impact, and adaptability across diverse educational settings.

Abstract

The low level of literacy in Indonesia remains a critical issue in education, particularly at the early childhood level. Literacy at this stage cannot begin directly with the introduction of letters or numbers; it requires approaches aligned with children's developmental needs. One promising method is Kamishibai, a traditional Japanese storytelling technique that combines visual and narrative elements. This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review of research examining the impact of Kamishibai on early childhood literacy skills. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted using the PRISMA model, reviewing literature published between 2021 and 2025 from two databases: Google Scholar and Scopus. A total of eight studies met the inclusion criteria, with research conducted in diverse contexts such as Indonesia, Madagascar (Africa), Finland, and Portugal. The findings indicate that Kamishibai effectively enhances early literacy skills, particularly in contextual literacy, basic literacy, and numeracy. It also supports the development of language and cognitive abilities, expression and creativity, communication and collaboration, as well as reading interest in young children.

Abstract

This qualitative research explores the impact of storytelling activities on early literacy development among children aged 5–6 years at TK Islam Al Baqy, Gresik. Storytelling, as an interactive pedagogical tool, is increasingly recognized for its potential to foster foundational literacy skills in early childhood education. The study aimed to examine how structured storytelling sessions contribute to children’s listening, vocabulary, verbal expression, and comprehension abilities. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with teachers and parents, and were analyzed thematically. The study involved 20 children and 4 teachers as participants. Findings indicate that storytelling significantly enhanced children's attentiveness, language confidence, and narrative thinking. Children engaged actively during storytelling sessions and demonstrated improved ability to retell stories, respond verbally, and use newly introduced vocabulary in daily communication. Moreover, storytelling facilitated socio-emotional development by nurturing empathy, imagination, and cooperative interaction among peers. Teachers reported that students became more motivated and expressive in classroom activities after consistent exposure to storytelling. The study concludes that storytelling is an effective, accessible, and developmentally appropriate method for promoting literacy in early learners. Despite its limited scope—focused on one school and a short observation period—this research provides empirical insights into the pedagogical integration of storytelling. It recommends wider adoption of storytelling in early childhood curricula and further investigation into its long-term effects. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on narrative-based learning and reinforces storytelling’s role as a vital strategy for fostering early literacy and holistic development in young children.

Abstract

Language development is crucial in early childhood growth, requiring appropriate stimulation to optimize brain potential during the golden period. The decline in reading interest due to technological advancement has negatively impacted reading comprehension abilities, as demonstrated by the 2016 OECD PISA study ranking Indonesian students' reading abilities at 64th position globally. This study analyzes the effectiveness of the read-aloud method in early childhood language development through comprehensive literature review. This study employed qualitative methodology reviewing 20 scientific articles published between 2020-2025, obtained through Google Scholar. Data analysis utilized content analysis techniques with systematic collection, synthesis, and examination to maintain research validity. Results demonstrate that read-aloud consistently provides positive impacts on various language abilities, including vocabulary enrichment, receptive and expressive language improvement, reading interest cultivation, and oral communication skills development. Effective implementation involves active child-reader interaction, engaging picture books utilization, question-and-answer strategies, and word repetition. Among analyzed articles, majority employed qualitative approaches (10 articles), followed by quantitative methods (6 articles), with highest publication frequency in 2023-2024. Despite demonstrating high effectiveness, research gaps remain regarding method variations for different cultural contexts, insufficient longitudinal studies on long-term impacts, and limited parent-teacher collaboration research. This study concludes that read-aloud is a highly valuable strategy in early childhood education for building strong literacy foundations.
