Abstract

We have studied the arthropods biodiversity in two paddy field ecosystems, namely, paddy field ecosystem using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system and non-IPM paddy field ecosystem. This study was conducted from April 2011 - November 2011 in three locations, that is, Pasar Kamis village and Sungai Rangas village in Banjar regency, and Guntung Payung village in Banjarbaru city, South Borneo Province. In this study, we used insect nets, yellow sticky traps, light trap and pitfall trap to get the sample or catch the arthropods in one period of planting season. The arthropods caught were then classified into some classes: pest (herbivore), natural enemy (parasitoid and predator), and other arthropods. After that, the Species Diversity Index was determined using its Shannon-Wiener Index (H), Evenness (e), Species Richness (R), and Species Similarity Index (IS). The sum of arthropods which have the characteristic of pest and parasitoid were higher in the IPM paddy fields than in the non-IPM paddy fields, and the sum of other arthropods were the same. The highest H and e values were in the IPM paddy field in Pasar Kamis village. The IS value for each three locations were 77.5% in Pasar Kamis village, 93.42% in Guntung Payung village, and 78.76% in Sungai Rangas village. Keywords: diversity, arthropods, ecosystem, and SLPHT

Abstract

Scales have attacked 9 hectares of apple land spread in 8 villages of Bumiaji sub-district such as Giripurno village, Tulungrejo village, Pandanrejo village, Sumbergondo village, Bulukerto village, Punten village, Gunungsari village, and Bumiaji village. This pest is a perennial pest on apple crops and difficult to control. The current way of control has not been able to overcome this pest problem. Therefore, research is needed to get effective control technology and easy to implement. The use of colour traps in addition to control needs, and also expected to needs of monitoring and identification of existing problems that make this pest difficult to control. This research was conducted to find out the effect of colour trap to community structure at Junggo, Tulungrejo Village, Bumiaji Sub-district, Batu City. Colour traps are fitted with 10 types of treatment colour with 3 replication. The observational data were analyzed by using community test. The results showed that the community analysis on the colour trap indicating that the index of diversity (H') and the dominance index (C) all treatments and families were small but the uniformity index (E) belonged to the stable community was owned by treatment B8 white colour with height 1.5m) and B9 (clear colour with height 1m). The largest dominant index (C) data of Diaspididae family (scales) is owned by B7 treatment (white colour with height 1m) of 0.18. The natural enemy species of scales found on apple plants is Encarsia strenua (silvestri) : Famili Aphelinidae.Key Words: Apple, Colour trap, Scales

Abstract

The greatest problem of modern agricultural practices is the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. It is noted that about 40% of the world's land surface is used for agriculture. The way this agricultural land is managed has a great influence on the global environment. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) farming system produces fewer negative externally affects, can effectively restore ecosystems and deliver well ecosystem services. Depending on methods applied and degree of production, agricultural practices impact biodiversity in the ecosystem and it also influences conservation practices within the ecosystem. The result showed that diversity of soil fungi on IPM was higher than diversity on conventional one. Trichoderma sp. and Acremonium sp. which are known as antagonist fungi were found on IPM but not on conventional one. Domination Index on IPM was lower than conventional field. Bacterial leaf blight (Xanthomonas oryzae) disease intensity showed no difference on both systems. The yield on IPM was higher (6.34 ton/ha) than conventional field (5.56 ton/ha). It has been found that rich biodiversity in agricultural environment improves productivity of agricultural systems. The IPM system gives more regard to the soil fungi biodiversity and considers it as an integrated system upon which the success of the agricultural production depends. Keywords : Integrated Pest Management, biodiversity, soil fungi, modern agricultural

Abstract

In 2011, we found a new bacterial disease characterized by wilt, dwarf and blight symptoms on sweet corn in Batu, East Java, Indonesia. The objective of this study is to characterize the causal agent of the disease. In this study, several assays were conducted, including hypersensitive response, pathogenicity, physiological and biochemical characteristics, PCR detection  using two specific species primer pairs for Pantoea stewartii pv. stewartii, and homology analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence. Four Gram-negative, non-motile, facultative anaerobic bacteria were isolated from the diseased tissue. Only two strains, BD1 and BB2, gave positive result in hypersensitive reaction, pathogenicity, and Koch’s postulate assays. BB2 and BD1 strains also showed positive results in the PCR amplification using specific primers derived from the P. stewartii subsp. stewartii 16-23S gene region of but showed negative result when using primers derived from P. stewartii subsp. stewartii hrpS gene region. Sequence of partial 16S rRNA gene of BD1 and BB2 showed highest homology at 96%  to P. stewartii subsp. stewartii strain ATCC 8199 (NR. 044800.1). This results suggest that bacterial pathogens isolated from sweet corn in Batu were strains of  Pantoea spp. Keywords : Zea mays, Pantoea spp, wilt, leaf blight, PCR <w:LsdException Locked="false" Priority="70" SemiHidde

Abstract

Tomato is an important horticultural commodity in Indonesia and plays strategic role in fulfilling daily needs of the public. The increase in production of tomato can be done by optimizing the provision of nutrients that support growth. The ability of bacteria as biological fertilizer to dissolve phosphate and produce IAA (Indole Acetic Acid) are important criteria for the use of bacteria as agents of plant growth promoters. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of some isolates of Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens in dissolving phosphate and produce IAA to enhance the growth of tomato. Phosphate test results showed that all isolates of B. subtilis and P. fluorescens capable of dissolving phosphate with the highest value indicated by P. fluorescens UB-PF5 (18 mm). All isolates of bacteria capable to produce IAA. The resulting value IAA ranged from 0.69 to 1.09 ppm with the highest value produced by B. subtilis UB-ABS2 (1.09 ppm). The test results on the parameters of root weight, root length, plant height and number of leaves showed that tomato treated with B. subtilis and P. fluorescens increased significant growth compared with watering only with distilled water. The highest increased root weight and root length were resulted by P. fluorescens UB-PF5 with values 97.10% and 64.83%, respectively. The highest increased plant height and number of leaves length were resulted by P. fluorescens UB-PF6 with values 38,80% and 30,7%, respectively.

Abstract

The agroforestry system with its diversity of vegetation has the potential on the existence of antagonistic and entomopathogen fungi. This study was conducted to evaluate the diversity of antagonistic fungi and entomopathogen fungi in the rhizosphere and pine leaf litters on pine monoculture and intercropping pine - coffee. The research was started from plot determination, sampling, fungal identification, antagonist test and pathogenicity test. The results of isolation of fungi from pine leaf litter on monoculture pine and intercropping pine-coffee fields obtained 17 genus of fungi. In monoculture pine, there 9 genus of fungi were found, while other 4 were still unidentified. In pine-coffee intercropping land 13 genus were observed. Based on the potential and bility tests, Acremonium sp. 3 and Penicillium sp. 2 has the highest inhibiton capacity, while isolate Paecilomyces sp. 1 and Paecilomyces sp. 2 had the best level of pathogenicity and mortality. Temperature and humidity did not affect the diversity of fungi. The diversity of entompathogenic and antagonistic fungi was higher in the pine-coffee intercropping land use. The litter plots had higher fungal diversity than the rhizosphere.
