Abstract

In recent years, the use of social media and the internet has become an inseparable part of everyday life, especially among adolescents. Social media offers a variety of benefits, including ease of communication, access to information, and entertainment. However, concerns have emerged about its negative impact on mental health, especially in relation to self-harm behavior. Adolescents often imitate the trend of self-harm and join in posting the results of scratches on social media. The aim of this study was to determine variations in self-harm in adolescents which are related to the duration of internet use in one day and the use of social media. The research method uses a comparative descriptive approach and Two-Way ANOVA analysis to explore interactions between these variables. Data was collected through an online survey with a self-harm instrument consisting of 18 statements, with respondents choosing from 4 alternative answers available. The results of the analysis show that there are significant differences in self-harm behavior based on the duration of internet use per day and the type of social media used. Adolescents who use the TikTok platform show a higher self-harm score compared to other platforms, especially with longer duration of internet use. These findings indicate that the type and way of using social media has a significant influence on self-harm behavior.

Abstract

The suicide rate among adolescents and young adults has risen to the position of the second greatest cause of mortality. Research on the influence of social media on the suicide risk or reduction of risk among young people is a relatively new and rapidly increasing field of study that requires the attention of a wide variety of specialists working in the field of mental health services. This research aims to describe the condition of self-harm based on the age of individuals who use the Instagram platform. This research is comparative research obtained through purposive random sampling. The sample for this research was 288 respondents consisting of various ages. Data were collected using a self-harm instrument with 18 items in a four-point response format. The analysis technique uses an item response theory (IRT) approach with Rasch Model analysis. This research tested descriptive and differences using Anova with the help of WINSTEPS Version 5.0.0. The results show that there is a significant difference between self-harm among Instagram users based on age. In addition, Instagram users aged 18–20 in late teenage development fill out the self-harm instrument more than other age groups. Instagram users had low self-harm rates, according to the study. This study recommends that policymakers and scholars should monitor social media mental health trends.

The research employed a quantitative descriptive method with a total sampling technique involving 93 students from grades X and XI. Data were collected using validated and reliability questionnaires and analyzed using simple linear regression via SPSS 20.0. The results revealed a significant influence of IGD on phubbing behavior, indicated by a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05). Thus, IGD contributes to increased phubbing behavior. The R.Square value obtained was 0.614, which means that the Internet Gaming Disorder variable has an influence of 61.4% on the Phubbing behavior variable. These findings highlight the need for proactive BK interventions to mitigate excessive gaming and improve students' communication.

Abstract

This study examines the correlation between self-regulation and meaning of life among high school students. Adolescence is a crucial developmental phase characterized by identity exploration and emotional challenges, where self-regulation and life purpose play essential roles. Self-regulation refers to the ability to manage thoughts, emotions, and behaviors toward long-term goals. Meanwhile, meaning of life involves both the presence and search for purpose. This quantitative correlational research was conducted at SMA Trisoko Jakarta, involving 122 randomly selected students from a population of 176. Data were collected using validated instruments based on Zimmerman’s (1989) self-regulation theory and Steger’s (2006) meaning in life framework. Statistical analysis used Pearson’s product-moment correlation. Results showed a significant positive relationship between self-regulation and meaning of life (r = 0.741, p < 0.01), indicating a strong correlation. These findings suggest that students with higher self-regulation are more likely to experience a stronger sense of life meaning. The study underscores the importance of school-based counseling in enhancing students' self-regulation to support identity development and existential well-being.
