This study tries to trace the meaning of wabah and tho‘un as they are used in Arabic and Indonesian language. To do so, three diachronic corpora were utilized as resources. They are Malay Concordance Project corpora (MCP), Leipzig Corpora collection, and WebCorp. MCP was used to determine the word wabah and tho’un in pre-modern era. Leipzig corpora was used to demonstrate the collocation and concordance of the studied words. WebCorp was used to trace their used in the modern era and in more recent texts. This study revealed that wabah is originally from وباء, a word that is borrowed from Arabic waba‘. The used of wabak was found in 1500’s, in pre-modern texts. This word furthermore becomes wabah in modern uses. Unlike, the words tho‘un (read: ṭāʻūn) was unknow in the pre-modern era. Abstract

Education, which is based on the integration of culture, is a key part of the learning process. The teaching material will always be part of the success of the teaching and learning process. School as an educational institution or institution is responsible for instilling multicultural education in students from an early age, which will give birth to a multi-cultural generation, so that the concept of multicultural education is very much in line with that applied in the world of education in Indonesia. The current study therefore looked at culture as a measuring instrument for the application of multiculturalism, and further explained the existence of Indonesian culture in Arabic teaching materials for grade VIII at junior high school. The method used in this research is qualitatively descriptive through the use of library research and content analysis. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the integration of Indonesian culture in Arabic textbooks at junior high school. It also seeks to look at the values of cultural diversity that are embedded in students' attitudes towards multi-cultural education, such as respect for tolerance, fairness, democracy and respect for differences. The results of this study have placed a great deal of emphasis on the achievement of cultural competence, such as the integration of multicultural educational values at the visual level, images, people's names, places, and so on. However, the placement of cultural values that are substantive does not have enough place in the Arabic textbook. Keywords: Cultural Existence, Arabic Textbooks, Multicultural Education

Abstract

Indonesian lexicon comprises numerous loanwords which some of them already exist since the 7th century. The large number of loanwords is the reason why many dictionaries of Indonesian etymology available today contain merely the origin of the words. Meanwhile, there are several aspects in a word etymology that can be studied and presented in a dictionary, such as the change in a word form and in its meaning. This article seeks to demonstrate the use of corpora in identifying the etymological information of Malay words from diachronic corpora and to figure out the semantic change of the Malay words undergo from time to time until they turn out to be Indonesian lexicon. More specifically, two selected Malay words were examined: bersiram and peraduan. By exploring data resources from the corpus of Malay Concordance Project and Leipzig Corpora, this study attempts to collect etymological information of Indonesian lexicon originated from Malay by employing a corpus based research. The findings show that the examined words have changed in meaning through generalization and metaphor. However, unlike the word bersiram, the change that the word peraduan happened only occurs in semantic level. This information, ultimately, can be used as informative data for a more comprehensive Indonesian etymology dictionary. Drawing on corpus analysis, this paper addresses the importance use of diachronic corpora in tracing words origin. Keywords: diachronic corpora, etymology, corpus analysis, semantic change, Malay-Indonesian
