Abstract

AbstractIndonesian learners of Arabic frequently encounter problems when learning Arabic language and its phonetics. The difficulties arise for there are differences between Arabic and Indonesian sound system. This article aimed to explore the learners’ difficulties in learning the Arabic sounds. Some learners of TPQ Al Muhajirin Sidayu Gresik were participated in this study. To conduct this research, the researcher used descriptive and contrastive approach and to collect the data by using a reading test of Arabic phonemes and interview were employed. This study revealed that the learners faced difficulties in pronouncing the Arabic consonants in which were influenced by their Indonesian language. To overcome those problems, the learners used the following strategies, i.e. pronouncing the same phonemes as in ح[ħ] and خ[x], pronouncing similar phonemes as in س  [s] and ش [ʃ], pronouncing phonemes by changing the phonemes in order to make it easier to utter as in ث [q] to س [s]. This study offers a recommendation for overcoming learners’ problems in pronouncing the Arabic sounds. Keywords: Arabic phonology, Arabic teaching, contrastive analysis, pronunciation.

Abstract

There are a significant number of lexical borrowings from Arabic language to Indonesian language. Among of them are the words jahanam and hijrah. These words are diachronically can be traced and found in literatures and religious texts. This paper seeks to scrutinize the semantic change of jahanam and hijrah. This paper analyses jahanam and hijrah as they are used in both old manuscripts and modern texts. To see their semantic change behaviour, collocation and concordance of their contexts were analysed. The manuscripts employed as the source of research data were taken from the Malay Concordance Project (MCP) which comprises of 165 classical Malay literatures containing some Islamic texts, Corpora Collection Leipzig University, and WebCorp Live Birmingham City University. Using the corpus linguistics method, this research manages to demonstrate how words change semantically through time. The results of this study can be used as material for the preparation of the Indonesian-Arabic etymology dictionary.

Abstract

Indonesian lexicon comprises numerous loanwords which some of them already exist since the 7th century. The large number of loanwords is the reason why many dictionaries of Indonesian etymology available today contain merely the origin of the words. Meanwhile, there are several aspects in a word etymology that can be studied and presented in a dictionary, such as the change in a word form and in its meaning. This article seeks to demonstrate the use of corpora in identifying the etymological information of Malay words from diachronic corpora and to figure out the semantic change of the Malay words undergo from time to time until they turn out to be Indonesian lexicon. More specifically, two selected Malay words were examined: bersiram and peraduan. By exploring data resources from the corpus of Malay Concordance Project and Leipzig Corpora, this study attempts to collect etymological information of Indonesian lexicon originated from Malay by employing a corpus based research. The findings show that the examined words have changed in meaning through generalization and metaphor. However, unlike the word bersiram, the change that the word peraduan happened only occurs in semantic level. This information, ultimately, can be used as informative data for a more comprehensive Indonesian etymology dictionary. Drawing on corpus analysis, this paper addresses the importance use of diachronic corpora in tracing words origin. Keywords: diachronic corpora, etymology, corpus analysis, semantic change, Malay-Indonesian

Abstract

Joining student organizational activities is positively impacts both extrinsically and intrinsically, such as developing leadership or good speaking skills. Several studies have been conducted to examine the role of student organizations in increasing their confidence when speaking. However, many of these studies rely only on general self-confidence but not in the context of classroom learning. The purpose of this study was to analyze students' speaking confidence in class and the correlation between students' organizational experience and their speaking confidence. This type of research is quantitative research. The population in this study found 35 students. The instrument used in this research is a questionnaire. The technique used to analyze the data is the Pearson Product Moment Correlation to determine the relationship between the independent variable (organizational experience) and the determinant variable (self-confidence). The results of this study indicate that the significance level (0.001) and Pearson correlation = 0.569 (sig = 0.01). This shows a significant relationship between the organization and a high level of self-confidence in class. It can be said that the organizational experience of students can increase their sense of self-confidence.

Abstract

Abstract

Ibn Taimiyah emphasized that Arabic belongs to the integral elements of Islam, and learning it is considered a necessity, because understanding the Qur'an and As-Sunnah cannot be achieved without Arabic. Thus, motivation to learn Arabic becomes an important aspect in learners' mastery of the language. Self-development is acknowledged as a factor that influences motivation to learn. This study aims to identify the correlations between self-development and students' learning motivation and the extent to which self-development affects their motivation to learn. The research method used in this study is quantitative with a descriptive correlational approach. The sampling consisted of seventh-grade students of MTs Sirojul Haromain, Gresik. The research findings showed a positive & significant relationship between self-development and students' motivation to learn, with a correlation value of r = 0.687 and significance of p = 0.001 (p < 0.01). The Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.890 indicates that the instrument in this study has excellent internal consistency.
