Abstract

Arabic songs that go viral on Indonesian social media are often enjoyed aesthetically without a deep understanding of the lyrics' meaning. One of them is a song entitled "Ma Syamamtul Warda," discovered by Toha Fasyni. The purpose of this study is to: 1) explain the meaning of the song "Ma Syamamtul Warda" hermeneutically; 2) find out the listener's reception of the song "Ma Syamamtul Warda"; 3) the plan lesson plan that involves innovative strategies through special modules. The method used in this study is descriptive-qualitative by combining literature reviews and field studies. Data were collected using observation guidelines and in-depth interview guidelines with several students. The data analysis technique employs Stuart Hall's hermeneutic encoding/decoding theory, which categorizes a person's understanding into three categories: hegemony-dominance, negotiation, and opposition. The results of the analysis show that: 1) the lyrics of the song "Ma Syamamtul Warda" have symbolic, Sufi, spiritual, and cosmic elements that are shown through each verse; 2) The majority of listeners' reception of the song "Ma Syamamtul Warda" shows the category of hegemonic-dominant decoding and there is one lyric that is interpreted by the informant with the category of negotiation decoding. Meanwhile, the category of opposition decoding, which indicates that listeners can interpret the song effectively, was not identified; 3) the lesson plan in class X of high school involves 10 core activities that incorporate innovative strategies through special modules.

Abstract

Indonesia as a country with religious and cultural plurality presents complex dynamics in the development of Islamic sects. This diversity poses challenges in understanding the changes and sustainability of religious sects holistically. This article examines the normative-historical paradigm as a new approach that integrates the dimensions of religious norms and historical context in the study of Indonesian Islamic sects. The research method used is a literature review with a comparative approach that analyses Islamic literature, historical documents, and the results of previous research on traditionalist, modernist, and contemporary sects. The results of the discussion show that the normative-historical paradigm is able to bridge the tension between normative religious teachings and dynamic socio-historical reality, thus providing a richer understanding of the process of transformation and sustainability of Islamic sects. This paradigm not only helps identify internal and external factors that influence sect change, but also emphasises the importance of accommodating plurality within an inclusive religious framework. Thus, the normative-historical paradigm offers a significant contribution in strengthening the study of Indonesian Islam in an increasingly complex and diverse contemporary era.

Abstract

The diversity of Islamic schools in Indonesia reflects the principle of rahmatan li al-'Ālamīn. Among the schools based on the teachings of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah are Nahdlatul Wathan (NW) and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Both have different views on traditionalism in introducing Islam comprehensively. This study aims to analyze the understanding and application of traditionalism by NW and NU in religious, social, and educational aspects, as well as identify similarities and differences in approaches. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a literature approach through scientific sources such as books, journals, and thesis. The results of the study show that NW and NU are both committed to maintaining Islamic values based on the Qur'an, As-Sunnah, and the ijtihad of classical scholars. Both integrate local Islamic values in social and educational practices, including through pesantren. The main difference lies in the focus of da'wah: NW emphasizes more on education and the preservation of local Islam, while NU is broader in the preservation of Islamic traditions. Although they have different approaches, both play an active role as agents of change in the development of the people and nation through relevant socio-economic programs. Thus, NW and NU are not only preserving traditions, but also motorizing inclusive and sustainable development.

Abstract

Low proficiency in Arabic writing among students continues to pose a significant educational challenge, primarily due to conventional teaching methods that lack integration of robust learning theories. This study examines the impact of combining behaviorist and cognitivist approaches to enhance Arabic writing skills among eighth-grade students at MTs Alif Laam Miim Surabaya. Utilizing a mixed-methods case study design, 30 students were purposively selected as participants. Data were gathered through observations, interviews, writing assessments, and questionnaires. Quantitative results using paired-sample t-tests indicated a statistically significant improvement in writing scores, with an average gain of 19.00 points (p < 0.001; Cohen’s d = 2.44). Qualitative findings revealed increased motivation, confidence, and reflective writing habits, including planning and self-evaluation. The study highlights that blending behaviorist drills with cognitively engaging strategies creates a more dynamic and student-centered learning atmosphere. The novelty of the research lies in demonstrating that integrating these theories not only enhances linguistic accuracy but also fosters metacognitive growth and writing creativity. This contributes valuable insights for curriculum development and teacher training. The proposed model offers a balanced, empirically grounded approach to Arabic writing instruction. Further studies are recommended to incorporate digital tools or explore constructivist methods and evaluate their long-term effectiveness.

Abstract

Da'wah plays a central role in the process of spreading and developing Islam in Indonesia. The two largest Islamic organizations in the country, namely Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, show different styles of da'wah approaches in principle. Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) adopts a cultural-based da'wah model, which accommodates Islamic values into local traditions, while Muhammadiyah carries a purification-based da'wah approach, which focuses on purifying Islamic teachings in accordance with the principles of the Qur'an and Hadith. Although these methodological differences have been widely researched, there is still a void of in-depth studies on the effectiveness and impact of these two approaches in the context of modern society, especially in the face of the dynamics of globalization and digitalization. This study aims to find out the history of the birth of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah and comparatively examine the culturally-based da'wah strategy of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and purification-based Muhammadiyah. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research method with a comparative study approach. The results of this study reveal that Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah have different da'wah approaches, with NU promoting cultural-based da'wah while Muhammadiyah emphasizes a purification approach. Both play an important role in building a religious and progressive society amid the challenges of globalization and digitalization in Indonesia.

Abstract

The beginning of the Tijaniyah order appeared in the archipelago at the beginning of the 20th century between 1920 and 1928. This research aims to explore the traces of the emergence of this order in the archipelago. Despite the challenges, the order continued to grow in several areas, especially in Cirebon and Garut (West Java), Madura, and the eastern tip of Java Island. The purpose of this article is to find out when tarekat tijinyah began to exist in the archipelago and how it developed and adapted. This research also strengthens the analysis by comparing and examining other relevant sources. The data analysis method used is descriptive analysis, which describes in detail and in depth to obtain an accurate understanding. The result of this research shows that the internal development is done through intensive coaching in each region for Tarekat Tijaniyah students, giving muqaddam duty schedule to foster and provide recitation material in hailalah places in turn, and structuring the administration of Tarekat Tijaniyah. Meanwhile, the development of external relations was carried out by establishing cooperation with the government and socio-political organisations. The development of Tarekat Tijaniyah is strongly influenced by the important role of muqaddam (teachers) in spreading its teachings. In addition, the relatively easy teachings and requirements for Tijaniyah followers also facilitated its spread in the archipelago.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the translation techniques and strategies used in translating the Qur’anic text into Javanese, and to assess their suitability with modern translation theories. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with a content analysis method. Primary data in the form of translated quotations of Qur’anic verses in the Tafsir al-Ibriz were analyzed by comparing them with the source text and examining them based on translation techniques and strategies. Secondary data were obtained from relevant literature on translation theory and tafsir studies. The results of the study indicate that KH. Bisri Musthofa applied various translation techniques and strategies such as correspondence, explanation, expansion, reduction, substitution, borrowing, adaptation, as well as structural and semantic strategies. His translation was not solely oriented towards literal meaning, but also considered the cultural background, oral tradition, and level of understanding of Javanese readers. This proves that translating religious texts requires a balance between fidelity to the source text and acceptability in the target language. The implications of this study confirm that KH. Bisri Musthofa’s efforts are an important example in locality-based translation studies, where the Qur’an is translated while respecting the authenticity of the Arabic text while being relevant to Javanese culture. This contribution opens up space for the development of translation science and a contextual approach in conveying religious messages.

Abstract

Arabic language instruction often faces challenges due to its complex grammatical structure, diglossic nature, and the fragmented application of teaching philosophies. Traditionally, educational practices tend to favor isolated methods, either experiential, theoretical, or evaluative, leading to imbalanced learning outcomes and limited communicative competence. In response to this issue, this study investigates the integration of empiricism, rationalism, and positivism as a philosophical foundation for Arabic language teaching to develop a more comprehensive and balanced instructional model. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with Arabic language educators, and analysis of curriculum documents and instructional materials. The findings reveal that empiricist strategies such as contextualized role-plays and experiential learning enhance students’ functional language proficiency. Rationalist elements support conceptual mastery through structured grammar instruction and deductive reasoning, while positivist assessments provide objective measurement of learning outcomes through standardized evaluation tools. However, each paradigm, when applied in isolation, revealed limitations in supporting holistic language development. The study concludes that a philosophical integration of these three paradigms enriches Arabic language pedagogy by aligning practical, conceptual, and evaluative dimensions of instruction. This model contributes to the design of theoretically grounded, context-responsive Arabic teaching practices for more effective language acquisition.
