Abstract

Abstract

Linguistic Landscape (LL) studies examine the visibility of language in public spaces through signs, symbols, and written displays that shape social interaction and meaning-making. Although LL research has expanded considerably in educational contexts, limited scholarly attention has been directed toward the pedagogical functions of Arabic Linguistic Landscapes within pesantren as bilingual Islamic learning environments. This article delves into investigation on how Arabic linguistic signs operate not only as institutional markers but also as pedagogical resources in Pesantren Modern Al-Amanah Junwangi, Indonesia. Adopting a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through observation and documentation of Arabic linguistic displays across the pesantren environment, including slogans, informational boards, directional signs, and other visual texts. The data were analyzed to identify the forms, distribution, and educational functions of Arabic signs within students’ everyday linguistic practices. The findings reveal that the Arabic Linguistic Landscape performs multiple interconnected roles: representing institutional identity, reinforcing language policy, and facilitating informal language acquisition beyond classroom settings. Continuous exposure to Arabic signage contributes to vocabulary development, habituates students to authentic linguistic expressions, and strengthens the implementation of language activities in daily interaction. More importantly, the study demonstrates that the integration of Arabic signs into the pesantren environment constructs an immersive and socially embedded language-learning ecology that bridges formal instruction and authentic communicative practice. By situating Arabic Linguistic Landscape as a pedagogical mediator within bilingual Islamic education, this study extends current LL scholarship beyond symbolic representation toward its role in sustaining environment-based language learning.

Abstract

Reading Arabic texts is a fundamental skill in mastering the Arabic language, requiring not only linguistic knowledge but also meaningful comprehension and contextual understanding. This study examines the cognitive approach to learning Arabic reading from philosophical and pedagogical perspectives. Philosophically, the analysis is grounded in classical cognitivist theories, particularly Piaget’s constructivism, Ausubel’s theory of meaningful learning, and Vygotsky’s sociocultural perspective, which emphasize active meaning construction, the role of prior knowledge, and guided learning through social interaction. Pedagogically, the study highlights the application of cognitive and metacognitive strategies such as schema activation, scaffolding, meaning elaboration, and reflective thinking within a structured reading model consisting of pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading stages. This study employs a qualitative approach using critical literature analysis of primary and secondary sources in educational psychology and language pedagogy. The findings indicate that a cognitive-based approach supports deeper comprehension of Arabic texts, encourages reflective understanding, and facilitates meaningful learning. Moreover, the integration of cognitive strategies with Islamic educational values underscores the relevance of this approach in fostering intellectual, ethical, and reflective engagement with Arabic texts. Overall, the cognitive approach positions Arabic reading as an active and reflective learning process that bridges theoretical foundations and pedagogical practice.

Abstract

Language is the primary communication tool that people always use. In increasingly modern developments, language is often used without considering the politeness established in communication. This is what makes researchers want to research language politeness strategies in drama. This research aims to examine the application of language strategies and politeness in the drama text "Harut and Marut" by Ali Ahmad Bakatsir. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection through the method of reading, taking notes, and then analyzing it. The results of this research reveal various strategies and principles of language politeness applied in the drama Harut and Marut. As for the results of research on language politeness strategies, according to Brown and Levinson in the drama Harut and Marut by Ali Ahmad Bakatsir, there are 12 types of Bald-on record strategies, eight negative politeness strategies, five positive politeness strategies, and 6 Bald-off record strategies. The implications of this research include the importance of language development in society and how to speak well to create an environment that pays attention to effective language politeness. The results of this research provide practical guidance for the community in improving quality and harmonious language communication..

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the professionalism of Arabic language educators through the perspective of ethical philosophy and its implications for teacher competency development. The approach used is library research with a qualitative-descriptive method, through theoretical studies and critical analysis of literature related to professionalism, deontological ethics, and Arabic language education. The results of the study show that the professionalism of Arabic language teachers does not only depend on mastery of technical competencies—such as pedagogy, linguistics, and learning methodology—but also on the internalisation of ethical values such as honesty, responsibility, fairness, and cultural sensitivity. Within the framework of deontological ethics, teachers are positioned as moral agents who have an obligation to educate with integrity and social responsibility. The main challenges identified include the incompatibility of teachers' academic backgrounds, the lack of integration of professional ethics in the teacher training curriculum, and bureaucratic pressure oriented towards quantitative results. The implications of this study emphasise the importance of integrating a professional ethics curriculum, moral reflection-based training, and the establishment of a code of ethics and ethical supervision mechanisms as strategies for developing the competence of professional and ethical Arabic language teachers. Thus, the development of teacher professionalism must be directed holistically, covering technical, moral, and spiritual aspects so that Arabic language learning can take place in a meaningful and transformative manner. Keywords: teacher professionalism, Arabic language, ethical philosophy, teacher competence.

Abstract

The thought of Abu Ḥamid Al Ghazali (1058–1111 CE) holds a profound influence on Islamic educational theory, particularly in the relationship between language, ethics, and character formation. This study aims to conceptually analyze the relevance of Al Ghazali’s ideas on language and education in the context of developing the Arabic Language curriculum implemented by the ministry of religious affairs (Kemenag) at the elementary school level. The method employed in this study is a qualitative approach based on library research, utilizing content analysis of Al Ghazali’s seminal works such as Iḥya’ ‘Ulum Al-din, Mizan Al ‘amal, and Al Mustashfa Min ‘ilm Al Uṣul, as well as official documents of the Arabic Language Curriculum issued by the ministry of religious affairs (Kemenag) in 2013 and its revision in 2020. The results of the analysis indicate that Al Ghazali positions language as both a spiritual and epistemological instrument for understanding divine revelation, instilling values of adab (proper conduct), and shaping the moral character of learners. According to him, language is not merely a tool of communication but also a means of moral cultivation and the purification of intention within the educational process. This line of thought aligns with the direction of the ministry of religious affairs’ curriculum, which emphasizes the development of communicative competence, Islamic values, and religious character. However, the study reveals a gap between Al Ghazali’s philosophical ideals and the practical implementation of the curriculum in the field, where Arabic language instruction at the elementary level remains primarily focused on linguistic competence, with limited attention to its ethical and spiritual dimensions. This study concludes that the development of the Arabic Language curriculum at the elementary school level should integrate the three main pillars of Al-Ghazali’s thought tawḥid (the oneness of God), adab (proper conduct), and ḥikmah (wisdom) into every aspect of learning, including objectives, content, methods, and assessment. In doing so, the curriculum would not only produce students who are proficient in the Arabic language but also individuals of noble character who possess spiritual awareness in their use of language.

Abstract

The internationalization of higher education commonly examines issues related to curriculum reform, student mobility, or international partnership. However, its symbolic linguistic and spatial dimensions are rarely discussed. This article explores how the linguistic landscape and place-making strategies can help internationalizing an Islamic higher education institution. A qualitative descriptive-exploratory design was used to collect data from Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel Surabaya (UINSA), Indonesia. This study utilizes visual observation of 159 linguistic signs, survey, and the analysis of institutional documents. The results indicate that the linguistic landscape at UINSA is dominated by the monolingual (Indonesian) signs (79.87%), whereas English and Arabic are restricted and have symbolic purposes. The architecture, building nomenclature, and Islamic iconography reflect place-making strategies that are not yet fully integrated into space planning framework, multilingual policy, and international branding practices. Stakeholder involvement in the development of the linguistic and spatial international campus environment needs more attention. This article highlights the significance of balancing Islamic values with global strategies by incorporating multilingual and participatory policies that foster an inclusive, culturally grounded, and globally responsive academic environment.

Abstract

Rhetoric as the art of effective speaking has received considerable attention since Ancient Greece, particularly through the writings of Aristotle. In his work Rhetorica, Aristotle emphasizes three main aspects of persuasion, namely ethos (the credibility of the speaker), pathos (emotional appeal), and logos (the power of logic and argumentation). These three concepts have significant relevance in the context of teaching mahārah kalām (speaking skills) in higher education, especially in Arabic language learning. Mahārah kalām requires not only the ability to express words linguistically correctly, but also the skills to construct arguments, convince audiences, and adapt speaking styles to social and academic contexts. Through the integration of Aristotle's rhetorical principles, students can be trained to develop more comprehensive communication skills, including clarity of ideas, logical strength, and effective delivery. This study confirms that the teaching of mahārah kalām in higher education can be improved by adapting classical rhetoric theory as a pedagogical foundation that complements modern learning methods. Thus, Aristotle's thinking is not only relevant in Western philosophical tradition, but can also make a real contribution to the development of critical, logical, and persuasive Arabic language skills.
