Abstract

Waste management in Bandar Lampung has reached a critical point, with significant environmental and public health implications. This community engagement initiative, titled "Turning Waste into Rupiah," focuses on empowering underprivileged households through waste management programs. Drawing on the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) framework, the program integrates local resources and emphasizes community participation to address waste-related challenges. The theoretical underpinning aligns with community empowerment and sustainable development principles, aiming to enhance environmental awareness and economic opportunities. The project employed a participatory approach involving 55 pre-identified low-income households in Way Dadi, Sukarame. Activities included training sessions on waste segregation, recycling, and value-adding practices like making plastic-stuffed cushions and compost production. Surveys and workshops were conducted to assess participants' knowledge, behavior, and potential in waste management. Key outcomes showed that while 58.2% of participants recognized the economic potential of waste, only 14.5% consistently practiced segregation. Post-training, participants demonstrated improved skills and produced marketable products, including compost and cushions. Collaborations with local stakeholders, including recycling industries and municipal authorities, ensured sustainable program implementation. The initiative effectively bridged environmental conservation with economic empowerment, showcasing the dual benefits of waste management. This program highlights the transformative power of community engagement in addressing environmental issues while fostering economic resilience. Future efforts should focus on scaling up such initiatives to broader populations and enhancing long-term impact through policy support and continued community involvement.

Abstract

The development of students’ critical thinking skills has become a central objective in contemporary science education, yet conventional instructional approaches often fail to actively engage learners in higher-order cognitive processes. This study aims to examine the effects of Construct 2 game-based learning media and learning styles on junior high school students’ critical thinking skills. A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a 2 × 3 factorial structure was employed, involving 67 seventh-grade students divided into an experimental group (Construct 2) and a control group (video-based learning). Data were collected using a validated critical thinking test and a learning style questionnaire, and analyzed using two-way ANOVA. The results revealed a significant main effect of learning media, with students in the game-based group achieving higher critical thinking scores than those in the video-based group. A significant effect of learning styles was also identified, indicating differences in critical thinking performance across visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. However, no significant interaction effect was found between learning media and learning styles. These findings suggest that interactive game-based learning provides a more effective approach to enhancing students’ critical thinking skills and can be applied consistently across diverse learner characteristics. The study contributes to the integration of educational technology and cognitive development by highlighting the role of interactive media in fostering higher-order thinking.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the RICOSRE-FC learning model (Reading, Identifying, Constructing, Solving, Reviewing, Extending – Flipped Classroom) on scientific reasoning and self-esteem of Grade X students in Biology subjects at senior high school. The research method used was quantitative with a quasi-experimental design, employing the Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The population of this study consisted of all Grade X students at SMA Perintis 2 Bandar Lampung. The sample included two classes: the experimental class (X-3) and the control class (X-4), selected through cluster random sampling. The research instruments consisted of a scientific reasoning test with 12 items and a self-esteem questionnaire with 26 statements, both of which had been tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, and hypothesis testing with an independent sample t-test. The results showed a significant effect of the RICOSRE-FC learning model on students’ scientific reasoning and self-esteem, with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. Therefore, the RICOSRE-FC learning model is effective in enhancing students’ scientific reasoning and self-esteem in Biology learning.

Abstract

The integration of digital learning media in biology instruction is increasingly important for enhancing students’ higher-order thinking skills, particularly in topics that involve abstract concepts and complex terminology, such as plant reproductive systems. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness of a crossword puzzle-based e-module using Eclipse Crossword to improve the critical thinking skills of Grade IX students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 01 Bandar Lampung. Employing a Research and Development design adapted from Borg and Gall, the study involved expert validation, readability testing, student response analysis, and an effectiveness test using a pretest–posttest control group design. Data were collected through validation sheets, questionnaires, observation, documentation, and critical thinking tests, and were analyzed using percentage scores, N-Gain, paired sample t-test, and independent sample t-test. The results showed that the developed e-module was highly feasible, with validation scores of 89.3% from media experts and 91.7% from material experts. The readability test indicated that 90% of students perceived the module as clear, engaging, and easy to use. The effectiveness test demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ critical thinking skills, with the experimental class achieving a higher posttest mean score than the control class and a moderate N-Gain score of 0.4403, compared with 0.1371 in the control class. Students also responded positively to the module, indicating that it was interactive, challenging, and helpful for understanding biological concepts. These findings imply that Eclipse Crossword-based e-modules can serve as an innovative and practical digital learning medium to support critical thinking development in biology learning.
