Abstract

The Sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) is a species facing the threat of population decline due to poaching. This study aims to analyze the genetic diversity of Sambar Deer from East Kalimantan using the Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) molecular marker with primers P01 and P02. There were 10 sambar deer, eight females and two males, from Pembibitan Ternak dan Hijuan Pakan Ternak, Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan. Blood samples were obtained from the jugular vein using an EDTA project tube. The samples were processed through Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and electrophoresis to detect polymorphism patterns. This research showed a DNA  average purity of 1.382 and an average concentration of 13.205; primer P01 produced three haplotype diversity, and primer P02 produced two haplotype diversity. The Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) values were 0.632 for primer P01 and 0.304 for primer P02. Dendrogram analysis revealed three population clusters based on genetic diversity. The conclusion indicates polymorphism, with primer P01 showing higher polymorphism than primer P02.

Abstract

Abstract

Stingless bee (Trigona sp.) cultivation presents significant potential for livestock diversification, improved food security, and rural economic development. Although this practice offers clear advantages, including low maintenance requirements, minimal environmental risk, and the high nutritional and commercial value of its honey, its adoption in Lempake Subdistrict, North Samarinda, East Kalimantan, remains limited. This situation is primarily due to a lack of community awareness and technical knowledge in apiculture. In response, a community service program was conducted on 10 May 2025 by lecturers from the Faculty of Agriculture, Mulawarman University, in collaboration with local farmer groups and supported by the Samarinda City Government. The program provided structured training through field visits, lectures, interactive discussions, and practical demonstrations at selected apiaries. Post-training evaluations showed a substantial improvement in participants’ understanding of colony management, hygienic honey harvesting, and the economic prospects of stingless bee products. Additionally, the program encouraged entrepreneurial interest and supported the development of value-added functional food products based on local resources. These findings indicate that targeted training and institutional collaboration are effective in promoting sustainable stingless beekeeping practices. Future initiatives should focus on continued technical support and the integration of apiculture products into local and digital markets to enhance competitiveness and economic impact.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the productivity and welfare of local farmers through the optimization of male layer chicken production. Male chickens, often considered by-products of the laying hen industry, are generally overlooked and regarded as less economically viable. However, with the application of appropriate farming strategies, male chickens can become an important alternative source of protein to support food security. The methods implemented in this program include training on poultry management, the use of efficient locally-based feed, and the development of marketing strategies for the production output. The results of the program show a significant improvement in both productivity and the efficiency of male layer chicken farming among local farmers. With ongoing support, this program is expected to become a sustainable empowerment model in the small-scale livestock farming sector.

Abstract

Abstract

Consumers’ preferences for beef are influenced by the interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic attributes, which affect their purchasing decisions and willingness to pay. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the key attributes influencing consumers’ purchasing power for beef in both traditional and modern markets in Samarinda City. The research was conducted in various markets in Samarinda City, East Kalimantan Province, including traditional markets (Segiri, Ijabah, Kedondong, and Rahmat) and modern markets (Hypermart Bigmall, Farmers Market Mall SCP, Foodmart Mall Lembuswana, and Lotte Grosir), using a questionnaire-based interview method. A total of 80 respondents, comprising 51 women and 29 men, were selected through purposive sampling. Primary data were collected through interviews and questionnaire responses. These were analyzed using chi-square tests and descriptive methods to assess consumers’ preferences for beef product attributes. The results showed that consumers in both traditional and modern markets preferred dark red beef with low-fat content and classified as Group One commercial cuts. The dark red beef with low-fat content is perceived as fresher and healthier (due to the lower number of calories and higher protein levels). The chi-square analysis indicated significant differences in consumers’ preferences for beef attributes between traditional and modern markets in Samarinda City, East Kalimantan Province.

Abstract

Lai (Durio kutejensis) is an endemic fruit of Kalimantan whose seeds have potential as a prebiotic source. This study aimed to identify the types of prebiotics in Lai fruit seeds and evaluate their potential for the growth of lactic acid bacteria. The study was conducted using a Completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments and six replications. The parameters observed included proximate composition, resistant starch content, and total bacteria. Proximate analysis was carried out with three treatments: Lai seed flour (LSF), boiled Lai seeds (BLS), and roasted Lai seeds (RLS). In vitro tests used cultures of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei treated with LSF at three levels (T1: 1%, T2: 2%, T3: 3%, and T0: without LSF). In conclusion, LSF has strong potential as a novel prebiotic source due to its resistant starch content and its ability to promote lactic acid bacterial growth. These preliminary results may serve as a basis for developing alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) in poultry.

Abstract

The term "Qurban," originating from Arabic, denotes "close" and constitutes one of the annual religious rituals practiced by Muslims, involving the ritual slaughter of various livestock, including camels, goats, cows, sheep, and buffaloes. Nonetheless, concerns have arisen regarding the welfare and comfort of these animals during the slaughtering process. This research aimed to investigate welfare-oriented procedures employed in the slaughter of sacrificial animals and to identify and analyse the stress factors affecting them. The study was conducted across nine mosques in nine sub districts in Samarinda city on July 10-11, 2023, and involved a sample of 115 slaughtered cattle. The observational indicators included instances of falling and slipping, vocalization, states of consciousness and unconsciousness, and duration until death. The findings revealed that 36.52% of the animals experienced falls or slips, their vocalization levels reached 15.65%, surpassing the anticipated threshold of 5%, consciousness and unconsciousness indicators were observed in 56.09% of the cases, and the longest duration until death fell within the range of 10-12 minutes. These findings highlight a lack of consideration for animal welfare during sacrificial animal slaughtering practices in Samarinda city mosques.
