Abstract

The Asian vine snake (Ahaetulla prasina) is an arboreal snake that can inhabit various types of trees in both lowland and highland areas. Based on its habitat, the Asian vine snake has a high potential to be infected by parasites. One of the parasitic diseases that can infect snakes is blood protozoa, which have the potential to be zoonotic. It can be transmitted between animals and humans through food contamination due to environmental pollution by snake feces which contain infective stage of protozoa. Clinical symptoms of this infection include lethargy, dehydration, and anorexia, which are common signs of parasitism. Case reports related to blood protozoa in snakes in the Indonesia are still very limited and have never been reported in Asian vine snake, even though many people keep Asian vine snake as exotic pets.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of ectoparasite infestation and all types of ectoparasites that infest wild rats (Rattus spp.) from three villages in Banyuwangi Subdistrict, namely Lateng Village, Kampung Mandar Village, and Kepatihan Village. A total of 100 wild rats of the species Rattus norvegicus and Rattus tanezumi were collected from Lateng Village, Kampung Mandar Village, and Kepatihan Village. Samples were anaesthetised based on the standard operational procedure of ethical testing and combed to obtain ectoparasites that predilect on the surface of the rat body. Ectoparasites were identified using the whole mount method natively with 10% KOH fixation, dehydration, and clearing to see the morphology of the ectoparasites.The results showed that the prevalence of ectoparasite infestation was 94% from three villages in Banyuwangi Subdistrict, consisting of 94 fleas, 38 lice, and 1,392 mites. The results of ectoparasite identification obtained five genus namely Xenopsylla, Polyplax, Hoplopleura, Laelaps, Ornithonyssus. Further research is needed to determine the prevalence of infestation and diversity in wild rats (Rattus spp.) in Indonesia.

Abstract

Scabiosis merupakan penyakit parasitik yang paling sering terjadi pada kucing peliharaan. Penyebab scabiosis pada kucing palin dominan adalah ektoparasit tungau Notoedres cati. Jumlah kasus scabiosis pada kucing peliharaan di Indonesia masih terbilang tinggi sehingga diperlukan pendekatan diagnosa yang tepat dan pengendalian yang komprehensif. Laporan kasus ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi aspek diagnose dan terapi kasus scabiosis pada kucing peliharaan sekaligus laporan pertama di dari wilayah Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur. Berdasarkan pemeriksaan gejala klinis dan skin scraping dapat dikonfirmasi bahwa diagnosa untuk pasien kucing adalah positif scabiosis akibat infestasi tungau Notoedres cati. Tindakan terapi yang dilakukan adalah dengan obat injeksi ivermektin yang dikombinasikan dengan terapi topical menggunakan sulfur sebagai anti parasitik. Hasil kombinasi terapi yang diperoleh dengan menggunakan injeksi ivermectin dan sulfur secara topikal, dapat dikonfirmasi proses perkembangan yang signifikan, ditandai dengan adanya perbaikan lesi kulit atau terjadi proses keratolisis pada bagian yang mengalami lesi khas scabiosis yaitu hiperkeratosis. Laporan kasus ini dapat bermanfaat bagi para dokter hewan praktisi dalam menentukan diagnosa dan terapi scabiosis pada kucing. Selain itu, informasi ilmiah pada laporan kasus juga berfungsi sebagai edukasi kepada para pemilik hewan peliharaan terkait dengan pentingnya manajemen perawatan dan pencegahan penyakit yang berpotensi zoonosis.

Abstract

Reptiles are a source of transmission of pathogenic bacteria to humans. Salmonella spp. are Gram-negative bacteria that are commonly found in the digestive tract of snakes. This study was conducted on Homalopsis buccata snakes with samples obtained by oral swabs and cloacal swabs on snakes. Isolation of Salmonella spp. carried out on Tetrathionate Broth media enrichment and will be inoculated on specific media in the form of Salmonella Shigella Agar media. Identification of bacteria was carried out by Gam staining and Indole, Methyl Red, Voges Proskauer and Citrate test. This study revealed the presence of Salmonella spp. in the snake Homalopsis buccata.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the type of insecticides which Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are resistant to, so that other susceptibleinsecticides still can be used. The study was a cross sectional epidemiological study with cluster sampling in Sub-district Wongsorejo,Banyuwangi, Muncar, Tegaldlimo, Kalibaru which is considered sufficient to represent Banyuwangi Regency. Mosquito samples appropriate tothe characteristics were isolated and tested for insecticide-resistance primer namely voltage gated sodium channel (VGSC) to determine thespecific resistance expressed in mosquitoes. The result of resistance test using WHO standard method showed that Aedes aegypti mosquito fromBanyuwangi Regency were resistant to cypermethrin 0.25% and malathion 0.8%. There was a VGSC coding gene with 250 bp band detectedusing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique which was associated with the resistance of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Banyuwangi Regencyto organophosphate insecticides (malathione) and pyrethroid insecticides (cypermethrin).

Abstract

This research aimed to characterize VirB4 protein of local isolate Brucella abortus with Western blotting method. The result showed that there were four protein bands with molecular weights of 64.61, 59.25, 21.63, and 16.70 kDa by triggering a reaction between the whole Brucella abortus and anti-Brucella abortus serum. The results also revealed that there was only one protein band with a molecular weight of 59.25 kDa triggering a reaction between the whole Brucella abortus and anti-VirB Brucella abortus serum. Finally, it can be concluded that VirB4 protein can affect the virulence factor of Brucella abortus, successfully characterized with the appearance of one band with a molecular weight of 59.25 kDa by using Western blotting method.
