Abstract

The transgender phenomenon has become a significant topic in global discussions on identity and human rights, prompting substantial debate among Muslims and challenging traditional interpretations of religious texts. This article examines the perspectives of two prominent Islamic intellectuals on the transgender issue. Buya Hamka, a conservative Indonesian cleric, adheres to a literal interpretation of the Quran and Hadith, considering gender change to be a violation of God's decree. In contrast, Amina Wadud, a progressive scholar from the United States, advocates a contextual interpretation that emphasises justice, humanity and acceptance of gender identity. The contrasting approaches of these two figures illustrate the diverse spectrum of Islamic thought, spanning from conservative to inclusive perspectives. This article not only discusses the theological and social implications of their views, but also highlights their relevance in the modern context. Through in-depth analysis, the article seeks to identify a middle ground that integrates respect for tradition with the need for justice and inclusiveness. This will provide valuable insights into how Islam can respond to transgender issues in the contemporary era.

Abstract

General Background: Character education plays a pivotal role in shaping students' behavior and mindset, especially in Islamic educational settings. Specific Background: At SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Pucuk Lamongan, concerns have arisen regarding students’ declining discipline, politeness, and moral conduct. Knowledge Gap: Despite numerous studies on character education, limited research addresses the role of muhadharah (religious speech practice) in systematically forming character in junior high school students within Islamic institutions. Aim: This study aims to investigate the implementation of muhadharah activities and analyze the character values cultivated through these practices. Methods and Results: Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving teachers, students, and administrators. The findings indicate that character development through muhadharah follows three stages: insight, engineering, and adaptation. The activities significantly foster bravery, politeness, discipline, cooperation, responsibility, literacy, and broad insight among students. Novelty: This research uniquely highlights muhadharah as an effective Islamic extracurricular framework for character formation, combining religious values with structured developmental stages. Implications: The findings suggest that muhadharah can serve as a replicable model for Islamic character education in other institutions facing similar behavioral challenges. Highlights : Highlights muhadharah as a tool for character development. Uses a structured three-stage formation model. Addresses behavioral issues in Islamic junior high schools Keywords: Character, Muhadharah, Islamic Education, Student Behavior, Extracurricular

Abstract

Abstract

The curriculum used for children with special needs (CSN) has not yet been fully aligned with their characteristics, interests, and developmental needs, thus it has not been able to optimally enhance their spiritual intelligence. The purpose of this study is to develop an adaptive and contextual Islamic curriculum innovation as an effort to improve the spiritual intelligence of children with special needs. The research subjects were CSN students at Lentera Fajar Indonesia, an inclusive educational institution with diverse conditions including ADHD, sensory impairments, speech disorders, and mental retardation. The research method employed was Research and Development (R&D) using the ADDIE model, while data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation, as well as pretest and posttest assessments. Data analysis was conducted using validity tests and paired sample t-tests to determine the significance of the curriculum development’s influence on the spiritual intelligence of CSN. The results showed that the developed curriculum was categorized as fairly valid with a percentage of 51–75% and was proven to have a significant impact on improving the spiritual intelligence of children, as evidenced by a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. These findings indicate that curriculum development has a significant influence on enhancing the spiritual intelligence of children with special needs.
