Population and storage pest spesies from four local markets with various roofs and floors in sub-district of Ilir Timur I, Palembang South Sumatra. In: Ningrahayu et al. (Eds.), Prosiding Seminar Nasional Lahan Suboptimal ke-12 Tahun 2024, Palembang  21 Oktober 2024. (pp. 823–835).  Palembang: Penerbit & Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI).Food products are agricultural goods imported from overseas and held for extended durations in local warehouses, resulting in pest infestations that cause a yield weight loss of 10.73%. This study aimed to ascertain the prevalence of pest insects in warehouses across several markets in Palembang City. The methodology employed in this observation involved sampling, direct field surveys, and identification utilizing the texts "Insects of Stored Grain" and "Insects of Stored Products" by David Rees. The survey results indicated that seven species of barnyard insects were identified in several markets within the Ilir Timur I Sub-district of Palembang. Pest insects from the warehouse, acquired via purposive sampling, were classified as storage pests that infest food products, including: Tribolium castaneum, Sitophilus oryzae, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, Carpophilus dimidiatus, Rhyzopertha dominica, Cryptolestes ferrugineus, and Callosobruchus chinensis. Disorganized storage facilities with concrete roofs and cement flooring exhibited elevated populations of insect pests. Storage utilizing a high-positioned fiber ceiling, and a ceramic floor can diminish the incidence of insect infestations. S. oryzae, the predominant storage pest insect, exhibits the maximum population density in rice commodities. R. dominica was found with the lowest population density. Future research need data regarding the storage conditions.

Abstract

Anemia remains a significant global health issue, particularly among adolescents, where its prevalence threatens both individual well-being and national development. This study evaluates the impact of health education on improving anemia knowledge among 32 adolescent girls at SMPN 2 Majalengka. Using a quasi-experimental approach, pretest and posttest questionnaires assessed participants' knowledge before and after a structured health education program. The intervention included lectures and discussions covering anemia's definition, symptoms, risk factors, impacts, prevention, and treatment. Results revealed a notable improvement in knowledge, with the proportion of respondents scoring in the "good knowledge" category increasing from 65.6% in the pretest to 84.4% in the posttest. The greatest improvement in understanding anemia management was observed, rising from 46.9% to 75.0%. These findings underscore the importance of systematic and well-structured health education in enhancing adolescents' understanding of anemia and promoting informed health decisions. Future efforts should prioritize developing interactive and accessible health education programs for broader adolescent populations. Further research with larger sample sizes and diverse methodologies is recommended to generalize findings and explore additional factors, such as family support and healthcare access, that influence the effectiveness of health education interventions.

Abstract

Stunting is a critical public health challenge in Indonesia, where over 30% of children under five are affected. This scoping review aims to identify sanitation and hygiene (WASH) risk factors associated with stunting prevalence in Indonesia over the past decade. Using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines, relevant studies were systematically identified, analyzed, and synthesized. Findings reveal a strong link between stunting and inadequate WASH conditions, including limited access to clean water, poor sanitation infrastructure, and inconsistent hygiene practices like handwashing with soap. Key challenges include the prevalence of open defecation, improper waste management, and reliance on unimproved water sources, particularly in low-income households. These conditions contribute to chronic diarrhea and environmental contamination, exacerbating stunting risks. Women are pivotal in mitigating these risks through improved hygiene, nutrition, and parenting practices. To combat stunting effectively, targeted interventions should focus on expanding access to clean water, enhancing sanitation infrastructure, and fostering behavioral changes in hygiene practices. Community-based programs and policies emphasizing women’s education and empowerment, alongside integrated WASH initiatives, are crucial for sustainable reductions in stunting prevalence and promoting child health in Indonesia.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected global mental health, with people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) particularly vulnerable due to their pre-existing challenges and heightened susceptibility to psychological impacts. This study reviews the literature to analyze the mental health implications of the pandemic on PLHIV, focusing on outcomes during and after the pandemic. A systematic review of ten studies retrieved from PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar reveals that PLHIV experiences elevated risks of anxiety, depression, social isolation, and psychological trauma. These conditions are exacerbated by stigma, disrupted healthcare services, and pandemic-induced stressors such as fear of infection and economic pressures. The review also highlights the complex interplay between HIV/AIDS, mental health, and the pandemic, with evidence showing that psychosocial stress can impair immune function, cognitive abilities, and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). The methodological analysis of the selected studies underscores the significance of robust psychosocial support in mitigating mental health challenges and improving disease prognosis. Comprehensive interventions, including stigma reduction strategies, enhanced access to mental health services, and public education, are critical to addressing these compounded vulnerabilities. The findings emphasize the necessity of integrating mental health care into holistic healthcare frameworks for PLHIV, especially in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract

Adolescent unwanted pregnancies can adversely affect individuals both physically and psychologically.  This study seeks to discover factors influencing the incidence of unintended pregnancies among adolescents during the past five years.  The research employed a scoping review methodology using the six-stage approach established by Arskey and O'Malley, utilising article searches in the Garuda, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases.  The inclusion criteria encompassed works from quantitative or qualitative research addressing the determinants of premarital pregnancy among teenagers aged 10–19 years, published in Indonesian or English between 2020 and 2024.  The review identified nine articles from South America, East Africa, South Africa, and Indonesia.  Seven primary factors contribute to unwanted pregnancies among adolescents: promiscuity, insufficient parental supervision, ignorance regarding the risks of premarital sex, the impact of pornography, sexual and emotional violence or abuse, childhood experiences of physical violence, and economic difficulties.  Many adolescent females acknowledged that a discordant connection with their parents or surroundings served as a catalyst for stress, prompting them to seek solace through premarital sexual activity.  Consequently, the role of parents is crucial in providing a secure and nurturing environment for children's cognitive and emotional development.  Additional research is required to investigate adolescents' expectations regarding parental involvement in the prevention of unintended pregnancies.
