Abstract

Civic Education (CE) is a strategic instrument within the national education system that plays a crucial role in shaping the character and personality of students in the school environment. This literature study aims to analyze the urgency and contribution of Civic Education as a moral foundation for the younger generation, particularly in facing the challenges of moral degradation and disruption in the digital era. The results of the study indicate that Civic Education functions not only as a transfer of knowledge regarding statehood but also as a means of internalizing the noble values of Pancasila, discipline, tolerance, and social responsibility. Effective implementation of Civic Education in schools is capable of transforming student behavior to be more democratic and possess high integrity. Amidst the dynamics of the times, Civic Education acts as an ethical filter that equips Generation Z with digital citizenship literacy to mitigate the negative impacts of information technology. The success of this character building is highly influenced by innovative learning methods, teacher role modeling, and the creation of a school ecosystem that supports the consistent practice of national values. Overall, strengthening civic education in schools is a fundamental investment in producing citizens who are intellectually intelligent and possess noble character.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Social Studies (IPS) education in shaping and developing tolerance attitudes among eighth-grade students at SMPN 6 Garut, as well as to identify the obstacles faced in its implementation. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature study approach. Data were collected from various sources, including books, scientific journals, and research articles related to social studies education and the development of tolerance attitudes. The data collection technique used content analysis, while data analysis was conducted by reviewing, comparing, and synthesizing relevant literature. The results indicate that Social Studies education plays a significant role in developing students' tolerance attitudes through understanding social diversity, interaction in the learning process, and the integration of character values such as empathy, cooperation, and mutual respect. The teacher’s role as a facilitator and role model is also crucial in shaping students' tolerance attitudes. In addition, a supportive school environment contributes to the internalization of tolerance values. However, several obstacles were identified in its implementation, including differences in students' backgrounds, the influence of social media, limited variation in teaching methods, and the lack of optimal integration of character education in Social Studies learning. To overcome these challenges, several efforts are required, such as implementing more interactive and varied teaching methods, improving teachers' competencies, creating an inclusive school culture, and strengthening collaboration between schools and parents. In conclusion, Social Studies education has an important role in fostering students' tolerance attitudes, but it requires integrated support to achieve optimal outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of the discussion method in developing students’ critical thinking skills in social studies learning, to identify its strengths and weaknesses, and to explain its suitability with the characteristics of social studies instruction. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. The data were obtained from books, journal articles, and various scientific publications relevant to the discussion method, critical thinking, and social studies learning. Data were collected through documentation study and analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques by reviewing, comparing, and synthesizing information based on the research focus. The results show that the discussion method plays an important role in developing students’ critical thinking skills as it encourages active participation, the ability to express opinions, respond to others’ viewpoints, and construct logical arguments. This method also has advantages in enhancing creativity, communication skills, collaboration, and learning motivation. However, its implementation faces several limitations, such as requiring more time, uneven student participation, and dependence on the teacher’s ability to manage the discussion effectively. Therefore, the discussion method can be considered a relevant instructional strategy to support the development of students’ critical thinking skills in social studies learning.
