Abstract

The dairy industry plays a strategic role in providing animal food, especially milk and its processed products. However, the sustainability of this industry is faced with the challenge of disease, one of which is mastitis inflammation of the udder which is generally caused by bacterial infections such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Escherichia coli. Mastitis is divided into clinical and subclinical forms, with significant impacts on livestock health, animal welfare, decreased milk production and quality, and economic losses for farmers. This study aims to examine the causes of mastitis, its risk factors, and prevention and control strategies at the farm level. The method used is a literature study of various scientific sources and current publications. The results of the study indicate that controlling mastitis requires a holistic approach through hygienic milking practices, good barn management, application of dry cow therapy, chronic culling of dairy cattle, vaccination, and regular monitoring of udder health. Implementation of sustainable prevention strategies, accompanied by increased farmer awareness and policy support, is key to reducing the prevalence of mastitis and strengthening the resilience of dairy farming businesses.

Abstract

The rising demand for sustainable and welfare-conscious poultry production has driven renewed interest in forage-based feeding systems. This systematic review explores the nutritional and functional roles of various forage types such as legumes, grasses, and aquatic plants in poultry diets. The review synthesizes evidence from recent Scopus-indexed publications, focusing on nutrient composition, bioactive properties, performance outcomes, and potential limitations. Forages provide protein, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that can enhance feed efficiency, immunity, gut health, and product quality in poultry. Their integration also aligns with circular agriculture principles and improves animal welfare through behavioral enrichment. However, the practical adoption of forage in poultry systems is constrained by variability in nutritional value, the presence of anti-nutritional factors (ANFs), low digestibility, and seasonal availability. Strategies such as fermentation, enzyme supplementation, and preservation techniques offer promising solutions to these challenges. This review identifies key research gaps, including the need for standardization of forage nutritional profiles, optimal inclusion rates, and long-term health impacts. Future directions highlight the potential of integrating precision nutrition technologies and policy support to enhance forage-based systems. Overall, forage represents a valuable component of sustainable poultry feeding strategies that balance performance, welfare, and environmental stewardship.

Abstract

This community service program was carried out in Sangiang Village, Wera District, Bima Regency, with the aim of enhancing the use of local feed resources to improve buffalo meat and milk production. Sangiang Village was chosen as the program location due to its relatively large buffalo population and the abundance of local feed resources, which had not yet been optimally utilized by farmers. The activities were conducted using a participatory approach, consisting of program socialization, extension activities on feed management, and hands-on training in processing local feed through fermentation and storage. Continuous monitoring and evaluation were undertaken to ensure the objectives were achieved. The results showed improvements in farmers’ knowledge, skills, and awareness regarding the use of alternative feed resources such as corn stover, cassava leaves, sweet potato leaves, and groundnut straw. Farmers also began adopting the introduced feed processing techniques, enabling them to provide quality feed reserves throughout the year. This program not only strengthened farmers’ technical capacity but also contributed to improved buffalo productivity in terms of daily weight gain and milk yield, while supporting food

Abstract

Cichorium intybus L. (chicory) is a perennial forage with considerable potential to support sustainable livestock systems, particularly in tropical regions. This study aims to evaluate its nutritional composition, agronomic performance, and livestock response. A literature-based review supported by field trial data was employed, focusing on nutrient analysis, cultivation practices, animal feeding performance, and economic viability. Quantitative findings indicate that chicory contains 14–22% crude protein and 10–20% inulin (dry weight basis), with forage yields reaching 8–12 t DM/ha/year under optimal management. Feeding trials demonstrate improvements in milk yield by 5–12%, reductions in nitrogen excretion by 10–15%, and decreases in gastrointestinal parasite load by 30–40% compared with conventional grass-based diets. Agronomically, chicory thrives in well-drained soils with balanced fertilization and responds positively to high-frequency irrigation and integrated pest management, although breeding for tropical adaptation remains essential. Despite its high nutritive value and bioactive properties, economic challenges such as high input costs and limited market access constrain broader adoption. Overall, chicory represents a promising alternative forage crop that enhances animal productivity, health, and environmental efficiency, while contributing to climate-resilient livestock production systems in tropical settings.

Abstract

The Dugong dugon a vulnerable marine herbivore, is closely tied to the health of seagrass ecosystems, which are increasingly threatened by land-based livestock activities in tropical coastal areas. This review explores how nutrient runoff, heavy metal contamination, and microplastics “primarily from livestock farming” contribute to eutrophication, biodiversity loss, and degradation of dugong forage quality. Moreover, the proximity of livestock to marine environments raises risks of zoonotic disease transmission, physiological stress, and mortality in dugongs. Using a One Health framework, this article highlights the ecological and health implications of terrestrial–marine interactions and identifies gaps in research and policy. Recommendations include integrated monitoring, sustainable livestock management, and transdisciplinary collaboration to protect dugong populations and their habitats.
