Abstract

This study aims to obtain a description of students' numeracy literacy based on their mathematical anxiety in solving Two-Variable Linear Equation System problems. This study was conducted at Bala Keselamatan Palu Junior High School. The study employed a qualitative approach involving three eighth-grade students selected based on levels of mathematical anxiety (high, moderate, and low).  The research subjects were selected based on the results of a mathematical anxiety questionnaire, taking into account the recommendations of the mathematics teacher. Data were collected through written Two-Variable Linear Equation System problem-solving tests and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s qualitative data analysis model.  The results indicate that students with low and moderate mathematical anxiety were able to meet all numeracy literacy indicators, although procedural weaknesses were observed in students with moderate anxiety. In contrast, students with high mathematical anxiety were only able to meet one numeracy literacy indicator.

Abstract

The growing demand for twenty-first century competencies has increased the need for mathematics instruction that promotes conceptual understanding, reflective reasoning, and active student engagement. However, trigonometry learning in many secondary schools remains dominated by procedural instruction and formula memorization, causing students to experience difficulties in understanding conceptual relationships. This study aimed to investigate the implementation of the discovery learning model in improving students’ conceptual understanding of trigonometry among class XI students at SMA IT Persis Palu, Indonesia. The study employed a qualitative-dominant Classroom Action Research design conducted through two iterative cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The participants involved 23 students, with three focal informants selected purposively based on preliminary conceptual difficulties. Data were collected through conceptual understanding tests, classroom observations, interviews, field notes, and documentation. The findings revealed substantial improvement in students’ conceptual understanding across all indicators, including the ability to restate concepts, identify conceptual relationships, distinguish examples and non-examples, and apply trigonometric concepts accurately in contextual problem-solving situations. Learning mastery increased progressively until 88.24% of students achieved the minimum competency criterion in Cycle II. The study concludes that discovery learning effectively facilitates conceptual reconstruction, collaborative inquiry, and meaningful mathematical understanding in secondary trigonometry learning.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis dan penyebab kesalahan siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal cerita Sistem Persamaan Linear Dua Variabel (SPLDV) berdasarkan prosedur Newman. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian penelitian deskriptif. Subjek dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari tiga orang siswa kelas IX Pyhlos di SMPN Terpadu Madani Palu kriteria siswa yang dipilih sebagai subjek yaitu siswa tersebut lebih banyak melakukan kesalahan dari siswa yang lain, kesalahan berbeda, kesalahan dapat mewakili kesalahan yang dilakukan siswa yang lain, kemampuan siswa dapat berkomunikasi dengan baik dan pertimbangan dari guru. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan memberikan tes tertulis berupa soal cerita dan dilanjutkan dengan wawancara terstruktur, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan data Miles, Huberman, dan Saldana yang meliputi kondensasi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Keabsahan data diperoleh melalui teknik member check. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa subjek melakukan kesalahan membaca, transformasi, keterampilan proses, dan penulisan jawaban akhir. Kesalahan membaca dan transformasi hanya ditemukan Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa mengalami kesalahan membaca, transformasi, keterampilan proses dan penulisan jawaban akhir. Kesalahan membaca dan transformasi ditemukan pada satu orang subjek, sedangkan kesalahan keterampilan proses dan penulisan jawaban akhir ditemukan pada seluruh subjek. Kesalahan tersebut disebabkan oleh kurang teliti, kesulitan membentuk model matematika, belum menguasai langkah penyelesaian, dan rendahnya keyakinan dalam menuliskan jawaban akhir. Temuan ini menunjukkan perlunya pembelajaran yang menekankan pemahaman prosedural dan sistematika penyelesaian soal cerita.

Abstract

For a long time, research has shown that mathematics is an unpleasant subject. This study examines whether mathematics remains scary today. Previous research has limitations, particularly in terms of why primary school students have negative perception of mathematics. This study uses a descriptive qualitative design supported by quantitative data to obtain more in-depth results. The subjects of this study were 153 fifth-grade students from nine primary schools in the city of Palu, selected at random. Data were collected via a questionnaire, and responses were categorized as positive or negative. Based on this, 109 students (71%) gave negative responses, namely "mathematics has a lot of formulas", "mathematics is difficult", "mathematics is scary", and "mathematics is boring". Meanwhile, 44 other students (29%) gave positive responses, namely "mathematics is challenging" and "mathematics is enjoyable". Subsequently, six participants were selected who were representatives of each type of response to be interviewed. Data credibility was tested using the member check technique. Then, it was analyzed using three stages, namely data condensation (summarizing and connecting meaning between data), data presentation (displaying data in tables and descriptions) and drawing conclusions (connecting data with theory, data categorization, and data interpretation). The results of this study indicate that many primary school students still find mathematics intimidating. This perception is driven by two factors: the nature of mathematics and the way it is taught. This situation necessitates the continued development of learning strategies that can shift students' perceptions from negative to positive.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of students' ability in solving integer multiplication operations using the Lattice method at SMPN 6 Palu in grade VII. The type of research used in this study is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The research data was collected through tests, observations, and interviews. The results of the study after using the Lattice method showed a difference in students' scores before and after using the Lattice method. Before using the lattice method, the average score of all students was only 62.3, but after using the lattice method, the average score of all students increased to 75.0. However, the increase was not significant, meaning not all students experienced it. It can be said that almost all students experienced difficulties in solving problems with varying error locations, such as students being less careful or considering the problem easy, students not understanding the concept of the problem, students not mastering multiplication operations or not memorizing multiplication, and finally, the lack of carefulness in students when working on problems.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan jenis-jenis miskonsepsi yang dialami siswa dan mengidentifikasi penyebab miskonsepsi tersebut pada siswa Kelas IX SMP Negeri 2 Banawa pada materi eksponen. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes tertulis dan wawancara. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari tiga siswa yang dipilih dari total 29 siswa Kelas IX Edelweis berdasarkan hasil tes tertulis yang dikombinasikan dengan Certainty of Response Index (CRI). Temuan penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa subjek WK mengalami keempat jenis miskonsepsi, yaitu: miskonsepsi generalisasi, notasi, spesialisasi berlebihan (overspecialization), dan bahasa. Subjek JR mengalami miskonsepsi generalisasi dan notasi, sedangkan subjek FAS hanya mengalami miskonsepsi generalisasi. Penyebab miskonsepsi ini utamanya bersifat internal, meliputi prakonsepsi yang salah, penalaran yang tidak lengkap, kemampuan kognitif yang terbatas, serta rendahnya minat belajar matematika. Selain itu, faktor terkait guru (seperti penjelasan yang membingungkan atau disampaikan terlalu cepat) dan faktor konteks sosial (seperti pengaruh teman sebaya) juga berkontribusi terhadap berkembangnya miskonsepsi siswa. Temuan ini menegaskan peran penting guru dalam mengidentifikasi dan menangani miskonsepsi sedini mungkin untuk mencegahnya berlanjut pada pembelajaran di masa depan.

Abstract

Penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini bertujuan mengeksplorasi profil berpikir kritis siswa laki-laki (TL) dan perempuan (TP) berkemampuan matematika tinggi di SMP Negeri 2 Banawa dalam menyelesaikan masalah Teorema Pythagoras. Subjek penelitian dipilih berdasarkan hasil ujian semester gasal. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes tertulis dan wawancara semistruktur menggunakan instrumen yang telah divalidasi pakar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kedua subjek memenuhi enam indikator berpikir kritis menurut Ennis: Focus, Reason, Inference, Situation, Clarity, dan Overview. Pada indikator Focus, keduanya mampu mengidentifikasi informasi relevan secara logis. Untuk Reason, TL memberikan penalaran praktis, sementara TP lebih detail dan konseptual. Pada Inference, keduanya mampu menarik simpulan, meski TP lebih eksplisit. Dalam indikator Situation, TL menerapkan konsep secara langsung, sedangkan TP menunjukkan aplikasi yang lebih luas. Terkait Clarity, penjelasan TP lebih terstruktur dibandingkan TL yang ringkas namun logis. Pada Overview, TP melakukan tinjauan aktif dengan representasi visual, sementara TL memverifikasi melalui perhitungan langsung. Meskipun memiliki tingkat kemampuan matematika yang sama, ditemukan perbedaan proses berpikir kritis pada keduanya. Perbedaan tersebut terlihat pada strategi penyelesaian masalah, cara mengungkapkan penalaran, serta kejelasan tahapan solusi yang dihasilkan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan penerapan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Think Pair Share (TPS) yang dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa kelas VII B SMP Negeri 19 Palu pada materi penjumlahan dan pengurangan bentuk aljabar. Desain penelitian ini mengacu pada model Kemmis dan McTaggart yang terdiri dari empat komponen, yaitu perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Think Pair Share (TPS) dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa pada materi tersebut melalui tahapan-tahapan sebagai berikut: (1) tahap pendahuluan, di mana guru menjelaskan aktivitas yang akan dilakukan pada setiap fase pembelajaran dan menyajikan materi; (2) tahap think (berpikir), di mana guru memberikan Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik (LKPD) dan meminta siswa memikirkan jawaban pertanyaan secara individual; (3) tahap pair (berpasangan), di mana guru meminta siswa bergabung dengan kelompok yang telah ditentukan untuk mendiskusikan hasil pemikiran individual dan menyepakati jawaban yang benar; (4) tahap share (berbagi), di mana guru mengundang beberapa kelompok untuk mempresentasikan hasil diskusi di depan kelas; serta (5) tahap penutup, di mana guru dan siswa secara bersama-sama menyimpulkan materi yang telah dipelajari.

Abstract

Critical thinking is an important competency in mathematics learning, but many students still experience difficulties in solving problems, especially on the Pythagorean theorem. This study aims to describe the critical thinking profile of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Palu in solving Pythagorean theorem problems in terms of mathematical ability. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with two subjects, namely one student with high mathematical ability (IR) and one student with medium mathematical ability (MN), who were selected purposively based on the results of a mathematical ability test. Data were collected through a mathematical ability test, a Pythagorean theorem problem-solving test, and in-depth interviews to reveal students' thinking processes. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions by referring to the six FRISCO critical thinking indicators according to Ennis, namely focus, reason, inference, situation, clarity, and overview. The results showed that students with high mathematical ability were able to optimally fulfill all FRISCO indicators, while students with medium ability only fulfilled some of the indicators and tended to rely on one solution procedure. These findings indicate that mathematical ability influences the quality of students' critical thinking, so that learning that encourages the use of various problem-solving strategies is needed to develop critical thinking skills more optimally.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the conceptual understanding ability of students of SMP Negeri 7 Palu in solving linear equation problems based on gender differences. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. The research subjects consisted of one male and one female student who have high mathematical abilities. Data were collected through a conceptual understanding test on linear equations and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was carried out using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña which includes data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The analysis of conceptual understanding ability refers to Kilpatrick's indicators, namely restating concepts, identifying examples and non-examples, classifying objects based on certain properties, presenting concepts, and applying concepts algorithmically. The results showed that both subjects were able to meet the analyzed conceptual understanding indicators. Differences were found in the quality of understanding and accuracy in solving problems. Female students showed better accuracy in algebraic operations and provided more detailed explanations, while male students were able to choose appropriate formulas, but still experienced errors in algebraic operations. This finding shows that there are differences in the characteristics of conceptual understanding between the two subjects, even though both are in the high mathematical ability category.
