Abstract

This study aims to examine in depth the practice of ruwat rambut gimbal (hair cutting ritual) as a form of dialectical and equal relationship between material, spiritual, and ecological entities. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a field design related to oral and written texts of the ruwat rambut gimbal tradition. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing with a hermeneutic approach to understand the symbolic meaning of texts and cultural actions. The results show that in the tradition of ruwat rambut gimbal, with a post-humanism and new animism approach, there are three harmonious relationships. The first relationship is material, involving dreadlocks, offerings, and children's requests. The second relationship is spiritual, involving belief in ancestral spirits and the use of Javanese songs and Islamic prayers as a medium of communication. The third relationship is ecological, involving the preservation of water sources, land, the sacred area of Dieng, and the management of agricultural products. These three relationships are interrelated in presenting the practice of gimbal hair, which shows the existence of a communication network between humans and non-human entities. The implications of this research enrich the understanding of cultural sustainability while strengthening ecological and spiritual awareness to maintain harmony between humans, nature, and ancestors, especially in the Dieng Plateau.

Abstract

Purpose: Rural youth face their most significant challenge when they try to access digital technology for their productive economic work because the digital divide continues to exist. The internet infrastructure in many rural areas has improved but people still lack digital skills and they fail to use online platforms for business purposes. This research study investigates how rural youth learn digital skills and assesses how structured digital training programs help them start online businesses and develop their rural-based businesses. Design/Methodology/Approach: The researchers conducted their study using a mixed-methods approach which included surveys and interviews and observations and document analysis that studied rural youth in Malang Regency Indonesia. The researchers used quantitative data to assess digital literacy and internet usage patterns while the qualitative data examined the obstacles and assistance systems that digital entrepreneurs face in their work. Findings: The research results demonstrate that people in the study area have sufficient internet access but they still use the internet for business activities at a low level. Digital platforms serve as content consumption tools for rural youth who do not use them to create content or market their products online. The main obstacles to progress include insufficient digital abilities combined with expensive internet access and missing mentorship and training resources.  The combination of training and mentoring together with infrastructure development helps people to build their digital skills which leads to increased e-commerce entrepreneurship activities. Originality/Value/Novelty: The implementation of a complete empowerment framework needs cooperation between government authorities, internet service providers, village enterprises (BUMDES), and local citizens to achieve inclusive and sustainable digital advancements in rural areas.

Abstract

Local languages continue to experience the threat of diglossia leakage. This study analyzes the vitality of the Tengger Javanese Dialect (BJDT), the role of women in the preservation of BJDT through traditional practices, and opportunities for the preservation of BJDT in other public spaces. A descriptive qualitative research design with a field study approach was implemented in Tosari Village, using interview techniques, observation, and literature review for data collection. Upon data collection, analysis was conducted based on the UNESCO language vitality indicators and cultural theme analysis. The research findings indicate that BJDT falls into the vulnerable category, as determined by the nine language vitality indicators. The evaluation of the issue leans toward the transmission of the language to younger generations, highlighting the need for the role of women, especially mothers, as the primary educators for children. A folkloric approach was employed to examine traditions passed down within the community, such as kumpul perapen in the private domain and bethek-sinoman in the public or local community domain. The opportunity for revitalizing BJDT in other public spaces could be realized through the preparation of a policy brief for local government addressing language policy issues that involve the local community. This research demonstrates how women’s traditional practices are central to sustaining BJDT, offering a framework that integrates community involvement, local government support, cultural documentation, and policy development to strengthen preservation efforts and expand scholarly understanding of this vulnerable tradition today.

Abstract

Given the limited existing studies on the symbolic elements in the ritual practices of the Tengger community—particularly those related to ethical and moral values in everyday life—this study aims to examine (i) how the tlotok leaf reflects the ethical and moral values of the Tengger community; and (ii) how the tlotok leaf serves as a space for cultural pedagogy in the transmission of the sustainable ethical values of the Tengger community. This study employs a qualitative approach using Clifford Geertz’s interpretive ethnographic perspective. Research data were collected through observation and semi-structured interviews with traditional leaders. Data analysis was conducted through three main stages: (i) data reduction; (ii) data presentation; and (iii) conclusion drawing. The research findings reveal two key insights. First, the tlotok leaf embodies the ethics and moral values of the Tengger community through the concept of “telu tok,” reflected in the teachings of Tri Kaya Parisudha: thinking well, speaking well, and acting well. These principles manifest in the awareness of preserving nature, the practice of mindful speech, and acts of mutual cooperation in social life and the performance of traditional ceremonies.  Second, the practice of the tlotok leaf serves as a space for cultural pedagogy in the transmission of the Tengger community’s values of sustainable ethics. These values are learned through participation in social activities and rituals, thereby becoming embedded in everyday practices and passed down to subsequent generations. These findings suggest that cultural practices serve both as traditions and as mechanisms for the formation and transmission of ethical and moral values in the social life of the Tengger community.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the forms and patterns of language use, and informational-symbolic functions of signage employed by visually impaired massage therapists. The data source comprises 91 photographic records of signs and banners belonging to visually impaired massage practitioners across five districts (Lowokwaru, Blimbing, Sukun, Kedung Kandang, and Klojen) in Malang City, collected through field observation. Textual data were extracted from the words, phrases, and clauses appearing on these signs and banners. Data‑collection techniques included photography and transcription of all text into a corpus. For data analysis, Landry and Bourhis’s (1997) linguistic landscape framework was combined with corpus‑linguistic methods using Voyant Tools (Cirrus, StreamGraph, Trends panels) to identify lexical frequencies, collocations, and usage trends. The informational function was examined by counting seventeen types of informational signs; the symbolic function was then analysed through interpretive interviews and semantic‑corpus analysis. Findings reveal a dominance of monolingual Bahasa Indonesia (63.7 %), followed by bilingual (29.7 %) and multilingual (6.6 %) displays, reflecting both ethnic‑identity strategies and market capitalization. Core information, business name, service type, certification, contact details, prevailed in frequency. Corpus visualizations confirm a strong semantic association between “pijat” (massage) and “tunanetra” (visually impaired), as well as the emergence of symbols denoting economic self‑reliance, professionalism, and legal legitimacy. This research captures both the presence and the symbolic resistance of visually impaired therapists within Malang City’s public sphere.
