Abstract

This study investigates the difficulties experienced by EFL students in writing essays for prose analysis, along with the strategies they use to overcome these challenges. This research used qualitative research with a case study design. The participants of the study were 14 students of the English Language and Literature department from one of the state universities in Malang, East Java. The data collection took two months. The instruments used were interviews, questionaires, observation, and documentation. The result shows that students face major challenges in essay writing, particularly in content and organization, such as making good thesis statements and conclusions, and moderate difficulties with grammar. However, they demonstrated sufficient vocabulary and mechanical skills. To address these issues, students reported employing different types of strategies. The most common were mind mapping, continuous practice, and peer discussions. Moderately used strategies included seeking feedback, using audiovisual resources, and consulting dictionaries. The least used were translating, watching YouTube videos, and using AI tools or application. These strategies were applied throughout the writing process—pre-writing, whilst writing, and post-writing—and students found them effective in improving their prose analysis essays.

Abstract

This research aims to describe how Generation Z represents the tradition of pitungan weton through their interactions in the comment sections of TikTok, as well as to analyze how technological mechanisms—such as algorithms, visual content, and viral logic—shape their cognition and attitudes toward the tradition. The research adopts a qualitative paradigm grounded in Stuart Hall’s theory of representation (encoding–decoding model), while Dery’s concept of technoculture is used to understand how cultural meanings are interpreted, negotiated, or rejected within digital spaces. The findings reveal three decoding patterns: (i) dominant position (full acceptance of cultural meaning), (ii) negotiated position (adjustment between cultural values and personal experience), and (iii) oppositional position (rejection of tradition). These representations are not merely individual expressions, but also reflect a broader collective discourse among Generation Z in responding to local culture through digital media.

Abstract

Self-efficacy in writing is an important factor for a student-writer to accomplish a writing task. However, not all studies show that writing self-efficacy and writing achievement are positively related. The purpose of the study is to find out 1) the writing self-efficacy level of the second-year students of an English education study program in one of the private universities in Pasuruan Regency, East Java, Indonesia, and 2) the correlation between students’ writing self-efficacy and their writing performance. The research uses a correlational design.  The sample of the research was fifty students of English study program from one of private universities in Pasuruan regency, Easyt Java, Indonesia.  The instrument used to collect the data was the writing self-efficacy questionnaire developed by Prickel in 1994, test, Primary Trait Scoring (PTSG) rubric, and documentation of the student's essay. The questionnaire consists of 25 items about self-efficacy in writing with a five-point scale of answers. The result shows that the students’ self-efficacy level mainly falls in the moderate category (58%), while the rest fall in the high category (42%). The result of the correlation analysis shows that there is no correlation between the students’ writing self-efficacy and their writing achievement (r= -.020, n = 50, p = .892).  The result implies that writing teachers should continuously foster their students' writing self-efficacy by giving them sufficient practice opportunities, offering constructive feedback, as well as providing emotional and psychological support in time of difficulties.

Abstract

Halal cullinare has become a necessity, especially in tourist areas. Therefore, halal certification is required, especially in locations with a majority non-Muslim population. Besides ensuring halal status, halal certification also serves as a means to promote local cullinare promising economic growth for the local community while preserving the rich culinary heritage. This community service project focuses on three villages on the slopes of Mount Bromo, namely Ngadiwono Village, Tlogosari, and Mojorejo. The program took place on June 25-26, 2023, with a primary focus on the Tosari Village rest area, in collaboration with the Baladaun community, local tourism communities (Pokdarwis), women's organizations (ibu-ibu PKK), and local SMEs (UMKM). Several activities have already been carried out, including the dissemination and education about halal certification, with experts and halal certification consultants from Brawijaya University invited to provide guidance. Abstract

This research aims to explore the various roles of the non-royal belamin tradition in upholding adult education principles in Kampong Banjar, West Kalimantan. The study employed a phenomenological method with a qualitative approach. Data in this study were in the form of cultural behavior, describing the beliefs, history, and equipment of the non-royal belamin tradition from specific informants, the customary leader, and the implementer. Data were collected using interviews, observation, and documentation techniques. The analysis used an interactive model with reduction stages, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results revealed that the non-royal belamin tradition embodied four principles of adult education: (1) Life value-based learning, (2) Experience-based learning, (3) Topic-based learning relevant to life; (4) Problem-centered learning. Notably, the noble Islamic values demonstrated in this tradition encompass religious and social values. The values with the most profound impact on adult education in this tradition were al-ukhuwah (caring) and al-munfiqun (high awareness of helping others). Through the embodiment of these solid traditional values, harmony was consistently maintained.
