Abstract

The implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia aims to cultivate students who embody the values of Pancasila. However, achieving the profile of Pancasila learners has been challenging due to less meaningful learning experiences that do not cater to diverse student needs. This study explores the potential of Game-Based Learning (GBL) integrated with local wisdom to address these challenges in Batang Regency's high schools and vocational schools. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected from 25 teachers through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The findings reveal that GBL activities, such as traditional game adaptations, folktale integration, cultural role-playing, and local-themed vocabulary and grammar games, significantly enhance student engagement, motivation, and cultural awareness. These activities not only make learning more enjoyable and relevant but also foster the values of Pancasila, promote local culture, and support Batang tourism. The study reveals the importance of providing adequate resources and training for teachers to overcome implementation challenges and suggests future research to explore the long-term impacts and scalability of GBL. By integrating local wisdom into GBL, educators can create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that aligns with the Merdeka Curriculum's goals and enriches the educational experience in Indonesia.

Abstract

Speaking is an important skill for oral communication in English. For Indonesian students learning English as a foreign language, speaking is a difficult skill to acquire because producing speech from a non-native language is more difficult than understanding it. One method to improve speaking skill, is to implement multimedia in presentation. The objectives of this study are (1) analyzing student’s speaking skill by implementing multimedia in presentation; and (2) investigating student’s perception on implementation of multimedia in presentation. It is a qualitative research with phenomenological approach. Data was collected from observation and interview. The participants of this study were 18 undergraduate students of Nursing study program in Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendal Batang. The results show that implementation of multimedia in presentation has improved student’s speaking skill and the students had positive perceptions on implementation of multimedia in presentation. This was supported by observation and interview results, where majority of the students were able to speak full English after six presentations were done and had positive statements on the implementation of multimedia in presentation.

Abstract

This study explored the implementation of the Local Environment Exploration Method in English Language Teaching (ELT) at SMP Negeri 1 Weleri, examining its impact on student engagement, contextual relevance, cultural awareness, and teacher adaptation. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis with teachers and students. The findings reveal that integrating local environmental contexts into ELT enhances language learning by making lessons more meaningful and relatable, increasing students' motivation and active participation. Moreover, the method promotes environmental stewardship and cultural identity by connecting language acquisition with local traditions and natural surroundings. Teachers reported improved pedagogical skills through innovative lesson planning and experiential learning activities, although challenges related to resource limitations and scheduling were identified. This study highlights the dual benefit of this method, which fosters linguistic competence while enriching cultural awareness, thus offering a holistic approach to ELT. The findings contribute to the growing body of literature on contextualized learning and provide practical insights for educators seeking to integrate culturally relevant and place-based teaching methods. Future research should investigate the long-term effects of this method on language proficiency and cultural preservation in diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of deep learning strategies on student engagement in EFL classrooms and examines teachers’ perceptions of their implementation. Conducted at SMP N 2 Bandar, the research employed a qualitative phenomenological approach involving classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that strategies such as problem-based learning, collaborative tasks, reflective questioning, and scaffolded critical thinking significantly enhance cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement among students. Observable indicators included increased participation, group collaboration, on-task behavior, and curiosity-driven questioning. Teachers reported that these approaches encouraged more meaningful learning, boosted student confidence, and fostered greater ownership of the learning process. Despite facing challenges like limited time and diverse student readiness, teachers believed that deep learning fostered a more dynamic and student-centered environment. The study concludes that deep learning strategies, when applied consistently, can transform EFL instruction by making learning more interactive, relevant, and engaging. These findings offer practical implications for English teachers seeking to promote deeper involvement and long-term motivation in language learning.

Abstract

This article explores the dual role of code mixing in English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms, examining whether it serves as a barrier or a bridge to effective language learning. Drawing from theoretical perspectives and practical classroom observations, the discussion highlights the potential benefits of code-mixing, such as enhancing comprehension, reducing learner anxiety, and facilitating smoother transitions to target language use. However, the article also addresses the potential drawbacks, including reduced exposure to English, overreliance on the first language (L1), and limited immersion. The findings suggest that code-mixing can be a valuable pedagogical tool when used strategically and in moderation. Ultimately, the article concludes that the impact of code mixing depends on how it is implemented by educators, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful and purposeful application to maximize its benefits while minimizing its risks in ESL settings. Therefore, ESL educators must exercise pedagogical awareness to balance innovation and integrity in language teaching while adapting to learners’ linguistic needs.

Abstract

Fulfilling students' needs in learning is a major factor in the educational process. However, there are still many misconceptions about the application of Merdeka Curriculum among teachers, resulting in the goal of competence in the Pancasila Student Profile not being achieved. Project-based learning is applied as an effort to provide different treatment to each student who has different characteristics and needs. The diversity of Batang Regency's local wisdom and local cultures that are starting to become extinct is a potential that should be preserved. The purpose of this study is to analyze local wisdom-based differentiation learning applied by high school and vocational school teachers in Batang Regency in the Merdeka Curriculum. This research is a qualitative research with a phenomenological approach where data collection uses questionnaires, interviews and observations with 20 teachers; the collected data is analysed by grouping according to the level and target competencies. Based on the results of the study, the dimensions of independence, critical reasoning and creativity are the 3 main characters that are reflected in every P5 lesson conducted by English teachers in Batang district.
