Abstract

This study examines the meaning of intercultural communication in the dowry tradition among the people of Donggo and Soromandi Districts, Bima Regency. This tradition includes a series of processions such as Wi'i Nggahi, Wa'a Mama, and Ampa Co'i, which are rich in cultural symbolism and social values. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with communication ethnography methods through observation and in-depth interviews with community leaders. The results show that communication between families at each stage of the tradition is key to creating understanding and strengthening relationships between two families from different cultural backgrounds. However, modernization has caused a shift in values in the implementation of this tradition, such as reducing face-to-face interaction and flexibility in determining post-wedding residence. Despite these changes, this tradition still holds important value as a local cultural identity and heritage. Thus, preserving the symbolic values and communication in this wedding tradition is essential to maintaining social harmony and enriching the cultural heritage of the Bima people amidst the changing times.

Abstract

The Public Relations of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) utilizes Instagram social media as a strategic platform to influence the party's image. PKS is portrayed as an Islamic-based political party that uses the path of da'wah in its political endeavors and strives to strengthen its image through content on Instagram social media. The objectives of this research are to measure 1) the content of the @pk_sejahtera Instagram social media, 2) the image of PKS, and 3) the influence of Instagram social media content on the image of PKS. The theories used are content pillars theory, image theory, and SOR (Stimulus-Organism-Response) theory. This research methodology uses a quantitative approach with a survey method and the sampling technique used is random sampling. The population consists of 2,577 followers of @pk_sejahtera on Instagram who commented or interacted on 68 content items related to activities, education, and entertainment from April 20 - May 20, 2025. The sample size is 96 respondents. Data collection techniques involved distributing closed online questionnaires. The research results show that variable X (credible, shareable, useful or fun, interesting, relevant, different, and on-brand) obtained an average value of 3.66 and is categorized as high, indicating that the presented content is positively evaluated, capable of attracting attention, clearly conveys messages, and builds engagement with its followers. Variable Y (visibility, clarity, and uniqueness) has an average value of 3.72 and is categorized as high, indicating that the image of PKS has been positively formed, appearing visible, clear, and unique. The influence of Instagram social media content on the image of PKS is obtained through an R Square value of 0.639 and a t-count value (12.908) > t-table (1.985), indicating a significant influence between Instagram social media content and the image of PKS, with 63.9% of the PKS image being influenced by Instagram social media content and the remaining 36.1% influenced by other factors outside the research variables. This research proves that Instagram social media content has a significant influence on the image of PKS.

Abstract

This article examines the strategic role of participatory communication, post-return entrepreneurship of Indonesian migrant workers, and the green economy framework in promoting sustainable development initiatives. Grounded in theories of participatory communication and green entrepreneurship, the study applies a bibliometric approach to scientific publications from 2000 to 2024, sourced from the Dimensions database and mapped using VOSviewer. The analysis identifies research trends, author networks, and dominant keywords, revealing that the integration of participatory communication, post-migration entrepreneurship, and green economy remains limited and underexplored. It also highlights weak institutional connectivity among Indonesian academic communities, with minimal positioning of returned migrant workers as active agents of sustainable transformation. The findings suggest that participatory communication can significantly strengthen community engagement, enhance program ownership, and drive social change. Consequently, the study recommends adopting transformative and collaborative approaches in development communication to empower returned migrant workers in advancing local green economies. These insights contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 (decent work), SDG 10 (reduced inequalities), and SDG 13 (climate action), by integrating migration into inclusive development strategies.

Abstract

The debate between the Indonesian Minister of Finance and Commission XI of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) regarding the issue of Indonesian citizens who are compelled to work abroad has drawn significant public attention and generated dynamic coverage across various national media outlets. This study aims to analyze how the media frame this polemic by employing Robert Entman’s framing model, which consists of four elements: problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. The research adopts a qualitative approach with a media discourse analysis design. Data were collected through documentation of news articles published by several national online media during the period in which the polemic unfolded. Samples were selected purposively based on the relevance of the news content and were subsequently analyzed using Entman’s framing indicators. To maintain data credibility, source triangulation and intercoder consistency checks were conducted. The findings reveal a contestation of framing among media outlets: some emphasize domestic structural issues such as economic inequality and limited job opportunities, while others reinforce the government’s narrative regarding global economic prospects and efforts to enhance the competitiveness of Indonesian workers. These findings highlight the role of media as a site of meaning contestation that shapes public perceptions of labor migration issues. The study underscores the importance of understanding framing dynamics to critically interpret media narratives, particularly those related to employment and migration.

Abstract

Community participation in development plays a very important role in the implementation of every regional development program, whether in villages or sub-districts, where the community is one of the key elements in the implementation of development and also a key factor in supporting the success of development at the sub-district level. Community involvement not only increases the effectiveness of development program implementation, but also strengthens a sense of ownership and responsibility for the results of development. This study aims to determine the level of community participation in the development process in sub-districts. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive approach through observation, interviews, and documentation. This study shows that community participation is still lacking, with the main factors being the level of education, knowledge about development, indifference, and a lack of community initiative. Therefore, it is necessary to increase community participation so that the community is involved in every stage of development. This is expected to encourage the achievement of sustainable community welfare.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has encouraged the government to utilize social media as an effective means of public communication. The Ministry of Agriculture is one institution that actively uses Instagram to convey information, build a positive image, and interact with the public. This study aims to determine the Public Relations strategy in managing the Instagram social media account @kementerianpertanian. This study uses the Public Relations strategy theory from Cutlip and Center, which consists of four stages: problem identification, planning and programming, communication and action, and evaluation. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and documentation of the Ministry of Agriculture's Public Relations team. The results show that the Ministry of Agriculture's Public Relations has implemented a planned communication strategy, starting from planning informative and educational content, utilizing Instagram features such as reels, stories, and live to increase interaction, to routine evaluation based on engagement data (likes, shares, comments, and saves). This strategy also adapts to social media trends and audience needs. Public Relations actively responds to user questions and comments to maintain two-way communication. However, challenges such as negative comments, limited resources, and changes in the Instagram algorithm are obstacles that still need to be overcome. Overall, the implemented strategy has successfully supported the improvement of the image and transparency of public information within the Ministry of Agriculture.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the crucial role of government public relations in managing effective communication in the digital era, particularly through cooperation with online media to ensure public information is delivered widely, accurately, and credibly. The research aims to analyze the implementation of media relations strategies carried out by the Public Relations Office of the South Tangerang City Social Service, focusing on three main aspects: managing media relations, developing information dissemination strategies, and building cooperative networks with online media. This study employs a qualitative approach using descriptive methods, with data collected through in-depth interviews and documentation. The theoretical framework is based on Yosal Iriantara’s (2019) media relations strategy, which emphasizes relationship management, communication strategies, and network development. The findings indicate that media relations are implemented through formal and informal communication, openness to media needs, the preparation of informative and community-oriented content, and continuous formal and informal collaboration with online media. Overall, the implementation of media relations strategies contributes to building a positive institutional image and enhancing public trust, although challenges remain, including limited advertorial budgets and human resource constraints.

Abstract

People with disabilities continue to experience barriers in accessing education, employment, and social participation, requiring active government involvement through inclusive programs. One such initiative is the International Disability Day event organized by the South Tangerang City Social Service in collaboration with Rumah I’m Star. This study aims to analyze the public relations activities of the South Tangerang City Social Service by examining problem identification, planning, implementation, and interpretation in organizing the event. The research is based on the public relations model of Cutlip, Center, and Broom, which includes four stages: defining the problem, planning and programming, taking action and communicating, and evaluating the program. A qualitative approach with a descriptive method was employed. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, involving purposively selected informants from the Public Relations Division of the Social Service, the founder of Rumah I’m Star, beneficiaries, and public relations experts. The findings show that the Social Service identified low public awareness of disability issues as the main problem and responded by developing a collaborative communication strategy with Rumah I’m Star. The activities implemented included art performances, talk shows, and a bazaar showcasing the works of persons with disabilities, which were disseminated digitally. Program evaluation was conducted internally without standardized measurement instruments, limiting interpretation to event outcomes and participant involvement. Overall, the study concludes that these public relations efforts enhanced government communication and promoted inclusion awareness, although broader public engagement is needed for sustainable impact.

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing virtual interactions that occurred on the Instagram account @tempodotco in response to the terror experienced by Tempo in 2025. Using qualitative methods and a netnographic approach, this study collected and categorized thousands of comments, likes, and re-shared content activities on Instagram reels related to the incident of sending pig heads and dead rats. The analysis of 2,341 comments showed that 89% of them expressed support and solidarity for press freedom, which was mostly expressed through the use of the hashtag #KamiTidakTakut. This study uses the Uses and Gratifications Theory to understand user motivations in interacting, including cognitive, affective, and social integration needs. The identified communication patterns are in accordance with the One-Step Flow Theory model, where messages from mass media are delivered directly to the audience without involving opinion leaders. Although mass media can influence individuals directly, the effects that arise from each individual can vary. These findings highlight the role of social media as a new digital public space that is effective in encouraging political participation, shaping public opinion, and expanding democracy amidst threats to press freedom. The implications of this research are expected to be a guide for media practitioners, academics, and policy makers in formulating adaptive communication strategies, as well as increasing media literacy and digital community participation in fighting for democratic values. Keywords: Virtual interaction, Social media, Terror Tempo 2025, Netnography, Uses and Gratifications, One-Step Flow Theory, Freedom of the press, Political participation, Media literacy, Digital democracy.

Abstract

The relationship between the media and power in Indonesia has undergone a shift in the dominant actors exercising strict control. The Orde Baru and Orde Lama were dominated by the state. After the state weakened following the 1998 Reformation, researchers found that the desired freedom and independence of the press had been fully realized. The relationship between the media and power continues to exist, although it is no longer the state, but rather market or economic interests and media owners. This study examines this relationship pattern from Vincent Mosco's perspective on the political economy of communication. Keyword: mass media, political power, political economy of communication, vincent mosco, Indonesian press.
