Abstract

Ashitaba herb contains flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, alkaloids, and terpenoids, which are known to have antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, ashitaba has the potential to be developed into anti-acne preparations, one of which is cream. Creams have various advantages, namely the ability to deliver hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds better, provide better moisture, and have emollient and occlusive properties by forming a protective layer on the skin and maintaining skin hydration longer. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical properties of methanol extract cream preparations of ashitaba herb. The research method used was laboratory experimental. Ashitaba herb was extracted using the sonication method with 80% methanol solvent to produce a solid extract. The ashitaba herb's methanol extract was combined to create a cream preparation, and its physical characteristics such as homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, and cream type were assessed. The physical property testing revealed that the cream preparation had a unique scent, a thick consistency, and a green hue. This resulted in a homogenous oil-in-water (O/W) type cream preparation with a pH of 6.29, viscosity of 37.050 cp, spreadability of 5.23 cm, and adhesion of 4.59 seconds. Thus, it can be said that the production of the methanol extract of ashitaba herb cream satisfies the requirements and has good physical qualities.

Abstract

Bengkaung Village, located in Batulayar District, has abundant natural resources, but they have not been optimally utilized. One way to utilize medicinal plants is by processing them into dried products, commonly known as simplisia, which allow for more extended storage. The community lacks sufficient knowledge of proper simplisia production techniques using the simple tools available in the village. The purpose of this activity is to enhance the skills and knowledge of PKK cadres from Bengkaung Village in processing medicinal plants found around the village into dried simplisia products of high economic value. This training activity was conducted through counseling and hands-on practice in producing medicinal plant simplisia using simple technology, followed by simplisia packaging. The training ran smoothly, and participants were enthusiastic throughout the activity. The outcomes of this program include packaged medicinal plant simplisia products in attractive containers and an increase in the knowledge of proper simplisia production among PKK cadres.

Abstract

Natural materials have great potential as sources of active antibiofilm compounds that can inhibit or destroy the biofilm matrix of pathogenic bacteria. Based on this, this review article was compiled as a systematic review journal to trace, select, and analyse various scientific publications related to the antibiofilm activity of natural materials over the past 10 years. The review focuses on the in vitro testing methods used in these journals, namely the Microtiter Plate Assay, tube test, direct microscopic observation, and post-test only control group design. The review results indicate that differences in testing methods yield varying levels of sensitivity and accuracy in observations; however, all demonstrate that antibiofilm efficacy is significantly influenced by phytochemical content, test concentration, and bacterial type. Thus, the selection of appropriate testing methods and comprehensive phytochemical analysis are key factors in supporting the development of effective, applicable, and environmentally friendly antibiofilm formulations based on natural materials.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition in which bacterial colonization plays a central role in lesion development. Growing concern regarding antibiotic resistance have encouraged the exploration of natural extracts as alternative antibacterial agents. This narrative literature review aims to analyze the zone profiles of natural extracts evaluated using diffusion assays against acne-associated bacteria, including Cutibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis, and to identify factors controbuting the variability of antibacterial activity.  A total of 22 primary studies published between 2015 and 2025 were retrieved from Google Scholar, PubMed, and Garuda and analyzed descriptively. The reviewed studies reported inhibition zone diameters ranging from approximately 10 to 25 mm, indicating varying degrees of antibacterial activity. Differences in inhibition zones were influenced by extract concentration, extraction solvent, and diffusion method. Overall, natural extract demonstrated promising antibacterial potential in preliminary in vitro screening assays; however, methodological variations should be carefully considered when interpreting inhibition zone results.
