Abstract

Mangrove forests can store more carbon than most terrestrial forest ecosystems, making them important for climate change mitigation. Their carbon sequestration potential depends on the trees' ability to absorb atmospheric CO₂ through photosynthesis. This study aimed to estimate biomass, carbon stock, and CO₂ sequestration in the mangrove area of the Marine Station of Universitas Riau, Dumai, Indonesia. The research was conducted from September to November 2025 at three stations representing terrestrial, riverine, and marine zones. Data were collected through DBH measurements of mangrove vegetation and sediment coring, supported by environmental parameters such as temperature, pH, and salinity. Mangrove density ranged from 1,200 to 2,388.33 individuals ha⁻¹, with the highest value at Station 2 and the lowest at Station 3. This pattern was positively related to biomass, vegetation carbon stock, and CO₂ sequestration. Estimated biomass reached 897.73 tons ha⁻¹, while vegetation carbon stock was 421.93 tons ha⁻¹. Sediment was the largest carbon pool, ranging from 1,896.10 to 2,202.97 tons ha⁻¹, with the highest value at Station 1. Total carbon stock reached 2,462.12 tons ha⁻¹. Statistical analysis showed a strong positive correlation among stand density, biomass, carbon stock, and CO₂ sequestration. Regression analysis indicated a significant relationship (R² = 0.502), meaning 50.2% of the variability in these parameters was explained by stand density. At the same time, the remainder was influenced by other factors such as stand age, substrate fertility, and planting distance.

Abstract

Sharks are predatory animals that live around coral reefs. This fish has slow growth and breeding limitations. Currently, its existence is increasingly threatened by the large number of captures, both as catch targets and bycatch, resulting in a decrease in the shark population in the waters. This study was conducted from November 2024 to January 2025 in Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands Province. The purpose of this study was to genotype-identify Carcharhinus sorrah and Carcharhinus leucas, as well as to assess their conservation status. This study used a survey method. The analysis begins with several stages, namely extraction, amplification, electrophoresis, and sequencing. After identifying the species and its name, the next step is to determine its conservation status and international trade status. To find out the conservation status through the IUCN Red List and the international trade status through CITES Appendices. On the IUCN Red List, Carcharhinus sorrah is categorized as near threatened (NT), and Carcharhinus leucas is categorized as vulnerable (VU). Both species are listed in Appendix II of CITES

Abstract

This survey was conducted in February - March 2023 in the waters of Jago-Jago Village, Central Tapanuli Regency. This study aimed to determine seagrass density and macrozoobenthos abundance, and to examine the relationship between seagrass density and macrozoobenthos abundance. This research was carried out according to a research method in which the sampling station was determined in a targeted area. Sampling was conducted at 3 research stations using 3 transects perpendicular to the shoreline at each station. Each transect line consists of 3 quadrat plots measuring 1 x 1 m2. The seagrass species found was Enhalus acoroides. The research results showed the highest density at station I (29.44 stands/m2), station II (25.33 stands/m2), and the lowest density was in station III (19.22 stands/m2). These data show that seagrass conditions at stations I and II are sparse, while station III has very sparse conditions. The result shows that the highest density is in station I, at 25.78 ind/m2, and the lowest is in station III, at 6.78 ind/m2. The results of the regression test show that the relationship between seagrass density and macrozoobenthos abundance is significant (p = 0.012) and positive (r = 0.787).

Abstract

This study aims to examine the characteristics of tides, waves, and bathymetry in Bayur Bay, Padang City, West Sumatra. Data collection was conducted in October 2024 through a survey method that included tidal observations for 15 days, wave measurements at three stations for 3 days, and measurements of water quality parameters (temperature, salinity, and brightness). Secondary data were obtained from ECMWF and GEBCO and analyzed using Surfer 13 and ArcGIS. The analysis results show that the tides are of a mixed type, leaning towards double daily with a Formzahl value of 0.51. Wave heights vary between 0.15 and 0.6 m, and validation with ECMWF data yields low RMSE values (0.1263-0.2983), indicating the suitability of the model and field data. The bathymetry of Bayur Bay ranges from 0 to 45 m, with the seabed dominated by fine sand. This information is important as a basis for coastal zone management, shipping, and maritime infrastructure development

Abstract

The community empowerment program utilizing biofloc technology in catfish farming was implemented in Tasik Seminai Village, Siak Regency, with the Pokdakan Tasik Makmur group as the primary partner. The program aimed to enhance the capacity of fish farmers, improve aquaculture techniques, strengthen business management, and generate social and economic benefits at the community level. A participatory approach was implemented through socialization, training, the establishment of a biofloc demonstration pond, and business mentoring over a three month period. Evaluation was conducted using pre- and post-tests, as well as field observations. The results demonstrate significant improvements in farmers’ capacities: knowledge increased from 62% to 85%, positive attitudes toward adopting biofloc rose from 65% to 88%, and technical skills improved from 60% to 82%. Technically, the Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) decreased from 1.8 to 1.4, while the Survival Rate (SR) increased from 70% to 90%. From an economic perspective, production costs decreased from IDR 23,000,000 to IDR 20,000,000, while net profit increased fivefold, rising from IDR 2,000,000 to IDR 10,000,000. Additionally, the R/C ratio improved from 1.09 to 1.50, indicating enhanced economic feasibility. Socially, the program strengthened group solidarity through collective action and intensive communication. Overall, biofloc technology has proven to be an effective strategic tool for empowering fishing communities by improving technical efficiency, economic viability, and social cohesion in catfish farming.
