Abstract

Abstract

Mangroves play a vital role in maintaining environmental, providing habitat for various organisms, and protecting coastal areas from abrasion. In addition, mangroves function as carbon sinks, where a portion of the captured carbon used for energy, and the others stored in plant stuctures. Thus, mangroves significantly contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. This study aims to determine the carbon content of mangrove litter from Excoecaria agallocha species in the estuary of Sungai Tanggul, Sungai Nibung Village. Kubu Raya, West Kalimantan. The types of litter measured include leaves, fruits, twigs, and flowers, which were collecter using litter traps. The results showed the total carbon content of the litter was 7.49 tons/ha/year. The largest contribution from leaves litter (5.49 tons/ha/year), followed by twigs (1.90 tons/ha/year), and fruits (0.10 tons/ha/year),while flowers had an insiginificant carbon content.

Abstract

Temajo Island is renowned for its marine tourism activities and is home to a range of organisms, including algae. Microalgae serve as indicator species, offering insights into the aquatic environment through their species composition and abundance. This study aims to provide preliminary data on the abundance and some ecological indices (diversity, evenness, and dominance) of microalgae on Temajo Island, which will be the basis for assessing water conditions and supporting conservation efforts and sustainable management of natural resources. The research was carried out at four stations with different characteristics. At each station, surface water samples were collected using a plankton net. The microalgae in these samples were subsequently examined under a microscope, and their quantities were measured. The microalgae abundance ranged from 2.84 to 7,697.14 ind/L, with an average of 193.34 ind/L. Chaetoceros was the most abundant genus, followed by Rhizosolenia, Guinardia, Thalassiosira, Pseudo-nitzschia, and Bacteriastrum. The diversity index (H’) ranged from 2.67 to 3.08, indicating moderate to high species richness, while the evenness index (E) ranged from 0.64 to 0.74, reflecting a high level of uniformity among microalgae populations. The dominance index (C) varied between 0.11 and 0.20, suggesting low dominance by any single genus. These indices collectively indicate a balanced and diverse microalgae community, underscoring the ecological health and stability of the Temajo Island waters. Preliminary information about the species composition and abundance of marine microalgae in this study provides valuable insights into the dynamics of microalgae populations and their ecological implications in the marine ecosystems of Indonesia.

Abstract

Penata Besar Island is designated as one of the Coastal and Small Island Conservation Areas (KKP3K) in West Kalimantan, is a critical site for conserving coral reefs and reef fish. Currently, global climate change and anthropogenic activities have exacerbated coral reef bleaching worldwide. In the context of escalating global climate change and human-induced threats, this study evaluates the health condition of coral reefs in the northern waters of Penata Besar Island, Bengkayang Regency. An exploratory approach was employed, utilizing the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method across four stations at two distinct depths (2-3 m and 5-6 m). The results revealed that coral cover varied with depth. At a depth of 2-3 m, live coral coverage was between 51.2% and 62.4%, classified as good, while at 5-6 m, coverage ranged from 30.4% to 49.4%, categorized as fair. Coral Massive (CM) was the predominant growth form observed. The diversity index (H') ranged from low to medium, the Evennes index (E) from medium to high, and the dominance index (C) was categorized as low. These findings highlight the varying health of coral reefs in different depths and provide a basis and essential insights for targeted conservation efforts.

Abstract

Titik sampling ditentukan berdasarkan metode purposive sampling.

Abstract

Mangroves play an essential ecological roles, such as providing habitats for various organisms and contributing to reducing CO2 emissions from human activities. These emissions are one of the main causes of global warming and climate change. This study aims to analyze the litter production rate and carbon content of mangrove litter in Sungai Nibung Village, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan. Sampling of mangrove litter was conducted for 14 days using a 1x1 m2 litter trap with a mesh size of 0.2 cm. The litter traps have been placed in 9 stations. Litter samples were collected on the 7th and 14th days, including parts of mangroves (leaves, twigs, flowers, and fruits) that naturally fell. Result of the study showed the total litter production rate ranged from 4.95 to 30.07 tons/ha/year, and the findings reveal a clear hierarchy in litter production with the composition being leaves > twigs > propagules/fruits > flowers. Leaves litter production rate is notably high, followed by twigs which represent the second-largest portion, then fruits, and flowers. Meanwhile, the total carbon content varied across sampling station, accounting for 2.30–23.59 tons/ha/year. This research provides essential baseline data for Sungai Nibung Village and highlights the potential of mangroves as significant carbon sinks. The results can be utilized for ecosystem-based coastal management and mangrove restoration aligned with regional environmental policies.

Abstract

Desa Bakau Village is a coastal area in Sambas Regency, West Kalimantan, which has the potential for mangrove forests with a high level of diversity. The mangrove ecosystem is a habitat for various types of biota, such as gastropods, generally known as snails. People often consume multiple gastropods using different processing methods. The nutritional content of the gastropods consumed by the people of Desa Bakau is not yet known. Therefore, this study aims to determine the nutritional composition of a gastropod from Desa Bakau (Littoraria melanostoma), including carbohydrates, protein, fat, ash content, water content, and minerals. Sampling was carried out in August 2022 in the mangrove area of Desa Bakau using the exploration method. Determination of nutritional content is carried out by referring to AOAC (2005). Proteins were analyzed by the Kjeldahl method. Fat was analyzed using the Soxhlet method. Macrominerals (Na, K, Mg, Ca, and P) were determined using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The nutritional content of Littoraria melanostoma is water content (1.51%), ash content (22.81%), protein (49,00 %), fat (3.60%), and carbohydrates (23.08%). The highest macromineral in Littoraria melanostoma is calcium at 71.38%. Thus, this mangrove snail can be used as a good alternative source of animal protein for human consumption at a relatively affordable price.
