Abstract

Sargassum policystum is one of the genus Sargassum from the brown macroalgae group which has an abundance of chemical constituents of fucoidan, fucoxanthin, phenolic acids and alginate which have important biological activities, such as antioxidants and antibacterials. This species thrives in the waters of Kabung Island, Bengkayang, West Kalimantan and has not been exploited so that it tends to act as a marine weed. This study aimed to determine the total phenolic content of the ethanolic extract of S. policystum and its antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Determination of the total content of phenolic compounds using the Folin Ciocalteu method, antioxidant testing using the DPPH method (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and the indicator of sample color change with the addition of these radicals was measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Antibacterial testing was carried out by the test sample diffusion method and the inhibition of the growth of the test bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli as test bacteria was indicated by the formation of a clear area around the sample wells. The results showed that the phenol content of the ethanolic extract of S. policystum was 79.8 mg/g extract, its antioxidant activity (IC50) was 98.903 ppm, classified as a strong antioxidant, while the comparison antioxidant, Vitamin C, had an IC50 of 6.26 ppm. The inhibitory ability of the ethanol extract against the test bacteria used was indicated by the formation of the largest inhibition diameter on S. aureus of 12.4 mm and E. coli of 12.0 mm.

Abstract

Kawasan mangrove Pering berada di Kelurahan Bandarsyah, Kecamatan Bunguran Timur, Kabupaten Natuna. Wilayah ini memiliki potensi hutan mangrove yang merupakan habitat bagi Geloina expansa. Masyarakat sekitar kawasan mangrove Pering menangkap kerang ini untuk dijual dan dikonsumsi karena mengandung tinggi protein dan rendah lemak. Makanan kaya protein memegang peranan penting pada masa pertumbuhan anak. Pada saat ini masih belum adanya data mengenai kandungan proksimat yang terkandung pada daging kerang tersebut. Maka dari itu penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui kandungan proksimat (kadar abu, air, protein, lemak dan karbohidrat). Metode yang dilakukan pada penelitian ini mengacu pada SNI 01-2891-1992. Analisis kadar abu menggunakan metode dry ash gravimetri, kadar air menggunakan metode termogravimetri, kadar protein menggunakan metode Kjeldhal, kadar lemak menggunakan metode soxhlet dan kadar karbohidrat menggunakan metode by difference. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, G. expansa memiliki kandungan kadar abu (6.55%), kadar air (3.65%), kadar protein (50.28%), kadar lemak (3.78%) dan kadar karbohidrat (25.76).

Abstract

Desa Sutera merupakan salah satu Kawasan Konservasi Pesisir dan Pulau-Pulau Kecil (KKP3K) di Kalimantan Barat yang kaya akan sumber daya hayati laut dan ekosistem penting. Mangrove memiliki peran signifikan dalam menjaga keseimbangan ekosistem. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui komposisi gastropoda di ekosistem mangrove Desa Sutera, Kayong Utara. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada bulan Maret hingga Mei 2024 dengan menggunakan metode eksploratif. Gastropoda yang ditemukan diidentifikasi jenisnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya tiga spesies gastropoda, yaitu spesies L. melanostoma memiliki panjang rata-rata 1,7 cm dan lebar 1,00 cm. Sementara itu, L. scabra memiliki panjang rata-rata 1,73 cm dan lebar 1,1 cm. Sedangkan L. carinifera memiliki ukuran yang sedikit lebih besar, dengan panjang rata-rata 1,8 cm dan lebar 1,3 cm.

Abstract

Ekowisata Mangrove Telok Bediri terletak di Desa Sungai Kupah, Kecamatan Sungai Kakap, Kabupaten Kubu Raya, Provinsi Kalimantan Barat. Ekosistem mangrove ini menopang keberlanjutan berbagai jenis mangrove seperti Avicennia lanata, Avicennia marina, Nypa fruticans, Rhizophora apiculata, dan Sonneratia alba. Kabupaten Kubu Raya dikenal memiliki ekosistem mangrove yang kaya dan beragam, menjadikannya sumber penting untuk eksplorasi bahan alam dengan potensi pengembangan obat. Skrining fitokimia berfungsi sebagai langkah awal untuk menggambarkan golongan senyawa yang terkandung dalam tanaman yang sedang diteliti. Meskipun potensinya besar, hingga kini belum ada kajian mengenai kandungan metabolit sekunder pada mangrove dari kawasan ekowisata Telok Bediri, Kabupaten Kubu Raya. Sehingga penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi senyawa metabolit sekunder pada ekstrak etanol daun A. marina, S. alba, dan N. fruticans melalui skrining fitokimia. Metode uji fitokimia yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah eksperimen laboratorium dan proses ekstraksi menggunakan metode maserasi menggunakan etanol teknis 96%. Hasil skrining fitokimia menunjukkan bahwa A. marina mengandung senyawa alkaloid dan saponin, tetapi tidak mengandung flavonoid, terpenoid, steroid, maupun tanin. Sebaliknya, S. alba dan N. fruticans tidak menunjukkan keberadaan senyawa alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin, terpenoid, steroid, maupun tanin. Temuan ini memberikan wawasan awal tentang kandungan kimia mangrove di kawasan ekowisata Telok Bediri dan mendukung potensi eksplorasi lebih lanjut untuk pengembangan bahan alami yang bernilai farmasi.

Abstract

Sponge Haliclona Sp is a member of the phylum porifera class Demospongia which is found living in the waters of the spermonde coral reefs of South Sulawesi. Its interaction with various microorganisms that live in the waters causes the formation of various kinds of active compounds and biological activities that are important in the world of health. The purpose of this study was to extract and fractionate protein from the Haliclona Sp sponge from Spermonde waters through confirmation using ammonium sulfate at various antioxidant levels, and to determine the content and activity of the protein in each fraction. The results showed that the protein content and antioxidant activity (IC50) of each fraction were, among others, in fraction 1 (0-30%) of 0.143 mg/L and 78.11 mg/L, fraction 2 (31-50%) 0.045 mg/L and 153.55 mg/L, fraction 3 (51–70%) of 0.020 and 161.12 mg/L, and fraction 4 (71–90%) of 0.112 and 104.71 mg/L, while crude protein of 0.277 mg/L and 115.22 mg/L. Ascorbic acid as a positive antioxidant control in this study resulted in an antioxidant activity of 2.74 mg/L.

Abstract

Mangrove area of Pering located in East Bunguran District which has the potential for a mangrove ecosystem. This area has an important ecological role as a habitat for various types of aquatic biota, one of them is mud crabs (Scylla sp.). This biota is widely distributed in Indonesian coast, including mangrove area of Pering. Scylla sp. as a key species that responsible for various processes in mangrove areas. The abundance of mud crabs is still under threat from nature and human activities, such as overfishing and overexploitation. Therefore, the aim of this research was to identify the types of mud crabs species from the mangrove area of Pering, Natuna Regency. The research was conducted in August 2023, the sample collection was done using the exploration method. Thus, the identification was carried out based on the morphological characteristics. The type of mud crabs found in the mangrove area of Pering, Natuna Regency, Riau Islands consisted of two species, such as Scylla serrata and Scylla tranquebarica.

Abstract

Kalimantan Barat memiliki ekosistem mangrove yang luas di beberapa area pesisir, termasuk di Kabupaten Mempawah. Salah satu desa di kabupaten ini adalah Desa Sungai Bakau Kecil, yang luas wilayahnya sekitar 16,95 km ². Penelitian ini mengkaji karakteristik morfologi dan komposisi ukuran gastropoda dari famili Ellobiidae di ekosistem mangrove Desa Sungai Bakau Kecil, Kalimantan Barat. Ekosistem mangrove ini berfungsi sebagai habitat penting bagi beragam biota, termasuk gastropoda, yang berperan sebagai indikator kesehatan lingkungan. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada bulan agustus 2024 di kawasan mangrove Desa Sungai Bakau Kecil, Kalimantan Barat. Sampel diambil menggunakan metode simple random sampling pada wilayah yang memiliki komunitas gastropoda dan dianalisis di laboratorium untuk identifikasi spesies dan pengukuran morfometrik. Hasil identifikasi menunjukkan keberadaan tiga spesies, yaitu Cassidula aurisfelis, Cassidula nucleus, dan Ellobium aurisjudae. Ketiga spesies ini menunjukkan variasi ukuran cangkang yang mencerminkan adaptasi mereka terhadap kondisi lingkungan. C. aurisfelis dan C. nucleus dominan di permukaan substrat dan akar mangrove (epifauna dan treefauna), sedangkan E. aurisjudae lebih sering ditemukan di substrat berlumpur. Distribusi ukuran yang seimbang pada ketiga spesies ini menunjukkan stabilitas ekologis ekosistem mangrove. Temuan ini menyoroti pentingnya gastropoda Ellobiidae sebagai indikator kesehatan ekosistem mangrove serta kontribusinya terhadap struktur komunitas mangrove.

Abstract

Mangroves play a vital role in maintaining environmental, providing habitat for various organisms, and protecting coastal areas from abrasion. In addition, mangroves function as carbon sinks, where a portion of the captured carbon used for energy, and the others stored in plant stuctures. Thus, mangroves significantly contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. This study aims to determine the carbon content of mangrove litter from Excoecaria agallocha species in the estuary of Sungai Tanggul, Sungai Nibung Village. Kubu Raya, West Kalimantan. The types of litter measured include leaves, fruits, twigs, and flowers, which were collecter using litter traps. The results showed the total carbon content of the litter was 7.49 tons/ha/year. The largest contribution from leaves litter (5.49 tons/ha/year), followed by twigs (1.90 tons/ha/year), and fruits (0.10 tons/ha/year),while flowers had an insiginificant carbon content.

Abstract

Temajo Island is renowned for its marine tourism activities and is home to a range of organisms, including algae. Microalgae serve as indicator species, offering insights into the aquatic environment through their species composition and abundance. This study aims to provide preliminary data on the abundance and some ecological indices (diversity, evenness, and dominance) of microalgae on Temajo Island, which will be the basis for assessing water conditions and supporting conservation efforts and sustainable management of natural resources. The research was carried out at four stations with different characteristics. At each station, surface water samples were collected using a plankton net. The microalgae in these samples were subsequently examined under a microscope, and their quantities were measured. The microalgae abundance ranged from 2.84 to 7,697.14 ind/L, with an average of 193.34 ind/L. Chaetoceros was the most abundant genus, followed by Rhizosolenia, Guinardia, Thalassiosira, Pseudo-nitzschia, and Bacteriastrum. The diversity index (H’) ranged from 2.67 to 3.08, indicating moderate to high species richness, while the evenness index (E) ranged from 0.64 to 0.74, reflecting a high level of uniformity among microalgae populations. The dominance index (C) varied between 0.11 and 0.20, suggesting low dominance by any single genus. These indices collectively indicate a balanced and diverse microalgae community, underscoring the ecological health and stability of the Temajo Island waters. Preliminary information about the species composition and abundance of marine microalgae in this study provides valuable insights into the dynamics of microalgae populations and their ecological implications in the marine ecosystems of Indonesia.

Abstract

Penata Besar Island is designated as one of the Coastal and Small Island Conservation Areas (KKP3K) in West Kalimantan, is a critical site for conserving coral reefs and reef fish. Currently, global climate change and anthropogenic activities have exacerbated coral reef bleaching worldwide. In the context of escalating global climate change and human-induced threats, this study evaluates the health condition of coral reefs in the northern waters of Penata Besar Island, Bengkayang Regency. An exploratory approach was employed, utilizing the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method across four stations at two distinct depths (2-3 m and 5-6 m). The results revealed that coral cover varied with depth. At a depth of 2-3 m, live coral coverage was between 51.2% and 62.4%, classified as good, while at 5-6 m, coverage ranged from 30.4% to 49.4%, categorized as fair. Coral Massive (CM) was the predominant growth form observed. The diversity index (H') ranged from low to medium, the Evennes index (E) from medium to high, and the dominance index (C) was categorized as low. These findings highlight the varying health of coral reefs in different depths and provide a basis and essential insights for targeted conservation efforts.
