Abstract

Reference Manager Tool (Mendeley) training for students at the Faculty of Islamic Religion, Muhammadiyah University was carried out with the aim of assisting students in creating bibliographies automatically and searching for references from leading international and national journals that have accreditation, especially in writing quotations. Training is carried out through lecture methods, practice and question and answer sessions led by the team. This activity was held at campus IV, Muhammadiyah University on Wednesday, December 6 2023, with the participation of 95 students from the Faculty of Islamic Religion, Muhammadiyah University, Bengkulu. The implementation of this service uses several techniques, namely lectures, discussions and demonstrations. The implementation stages of this service consist of several opening and introduction sessions, introduction to Mendeley installation and initial preparation, Mendeley account creation, main feature training, reference organization, use of citation tools, making a bibliography, question and answer sessions and practice. This service concludes that 80% of students understand well how to insert citations and create a bibliography using Mendeley. This service provides significant benefits and makes a positive contribution in preparing students at the Faculty of Islamic Religion, Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu to face academic challenges, as well as assisting in producing more structured written work. Some suggestions that should be considered for better implementation of service include conducting initial surveys to identify student knowledge and needs, providing complete and easily accessible training materials in various formats, conducting evaluations and collecting feedback from training participants to improve and adjust the program in the future.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ speed reading skills before and after the implementation of the Extending Concepts through Language Activities (ECOLA) learning model and to determine the effectiveness of this model in improving the speed reading skills of seventh-grade students in Class 7A at Seluma State Junior High School No. 2. This study was motivated by the students’ low speed reading skills, as indicated by a reading speed of 50-60 words per minute, a reading comprehension rate of 20%, and an average reading skill score of 51.83. This study employed a quantitative approach using an experimental method and a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects consisted of 27 students in Class VII A at Seluma State Junior High School 2. Data collection was conducted through speed reading ability tests before (pretest) and after (posttest) the implementation of the ECOLA model. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a normality test, and a paired-sample t-test. The results showed that the mean pretest score of 50.22 fell into the “below average” category, while the mean posttest score increased to 78.85, falling into the “good” category. The results of the normality test showed that the data were normally distributed, while the results of the paired-sample t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference in students’ speed reading ability before and after the implementation of the ECOLA model.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the improvement in poetry reading comprehension skills of sixth-grade students of MI Negeri 7 Seluma after the implementation of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) model. This study used a quantitative approach with an experimental research type and a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects were 9 sixth-grade students in the even semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The data collection technique used a poetry reading comprehension test given before (pretest) and after (posttest) the treatment. The data were analyzed through normality tests and hypothesis tests using the Paired Sample t-Test with the help of SPSS version 27. The results showed that the average pretest score was 58.7778 with a standard deviation of 6.28048, while the average posttest score increased to 83.6667 with a standard deviation of 6.08276. The results of the Paired Sample t-Test showed a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 <0.05, so H₀ was rejected and Hₐ was accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that the application of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) model significantly improved the poetry reading comprehension ability of sixth-grade students of MI Negeri 7 Seluma.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe parents’ roles in supporting children’s reading literacy activities at home among seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 11 Bengkulu City. Although parental involvement in children’s literacy has been widely examined, studies that specifically map parental roles among junior high school students through the dimensions of guidance, motivation, facilitation, role modeling, and control of media/gadget use remain limited. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method involving 38 parents/guardians selected from a population of 317. Data were collected using a four-point Likert-scale questionnaire consisting of 20 statements covering five indicators: guide, motivator, facilitator, role model, and controller of media/gadget use. The results showed an overall percentage of 76.15%. The most dominant role was motivator (78.78%), followed by facilitator (76.15%), controller of media/gadget use (75.99%), guide (75.00%), and role model (74.84%). The findings indicate that the main strength of parental involvement lies in providing encouragement and support, whereas reading role modeling is the aspect that most needs improvement. Since this study was descriptive and did not measure children’s literacy ability as a separate variable, the findings were not used to infer causal relationships. The contribution of this study lies in providing an empirical mapping of parental involvement in the home literacy environment of junior high school students and in identifying reading role modeling as an aspect requiring greater attention. These findings may serve as a basis for parents and schools to strengthen more targeted family literacy programs. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan peran orang tua dalam kegiatan literasi membaca anak di rumah pada siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 11 Kota Bengkulu. Meskipun keterlibatan orang tua dalam literasi anak telah banyak dikaji, penelitian yang secara khusus memetakan peran orang tua pada siswa jenjang sekolah menengah pertama melalui aspek pembimbing, motivator, fasilitator, teladan, dan pengontrol penggunaan media/gawai masih terbatas. Penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif dengan sampel 38 orang tua/wali dari populasi 317 orang. Data dikumpulkan melalui angket skala Likert empat pilihan yang terdiri atas 20 pernyataan berdasarkan lima indikator, yaitu pembimbing, motivator, fasilitator, teladan, dan pengontrol penggunaan media/gawai. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan persentase keseluruhan sebesar 76,15%. Peran yang paling dominan adalah motivator (78,78%), diikuti fasilitator (76,15%), pengontrol media/gawai (75,99%), pembimbing (75,00%), dan teladan (74,84%). Temuan menunjukkan bahwa kekuatan utama keterlibatan orang tua terletak pada pemberian dorongan dan dukungan, sedangkan keteladanan membaca merupakan aspek yang paling perlu ditingkatkan. Karena penelitian bersifat deskriptif dan tidak mengukur kemampuan literasi anak sebagai variabel tersendiri, hasil tidak digunakan untuk menyimpulkan pengaruh sebab-akibat. Kontribusi penelitian ini adalah memberikan pemetaan empiris mengenai bentuk keterlibatan orang tua dalam lingkungan literasi rumah pada siswa SMP serta mengidentifikasi keteladanan membaca sebagai aspek yang perlu mendapat perhatian lebih besar. Temuan ini dapat menjadi dasar bagi orang tua dan sekolah dalam memperkuat program literasi keluarga yang lebih Terarah.
