Abstract

Kajian dalam penelitian ini adalah dominasi gender yang muncul dalam penokohan di tiap cerita rakyat yang ada dalam buku Bunga Rampai Cerita Rakyat Tapanuli Tengah (The Anthology of Central Tapanuli Folktales) yang diterbitkan oleh Balai Bahasa Sumatera Utara tahun 2016. Metode  yang  digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah 8 (delapan) cerita rakyat yang terdapat dalam Buku Rampai Cerita Rakyat Tapanuli Tengah (The Anthology of Central Tapanuli Folktales), yaitu: (1) Putri Lopian, (2) Putri Runduk, (3) Putri Andam Dewi, (4) Legenda Bukit Batara, (5) Legenda Ujung Sibolga, (6) Legenda Raja dan Burung Dendang Buto, (7) Sonar Paku Bugis, dan (8) Asal Usul Makam Mahligai. Dari semua cerita rakyat, terdapat 10 tokoh utama, dimana tokoh laki-laki sebanyak 5 (lima) dan tokoh perempuan juga sebanyak 5 (lima) juga. Hasil dari kajian menemukan bahwa tidak ada dominasi pada salah satu gender dalam cerita rakyat Tapanuli Tengah. Gender laki-laki muncul dalam tokoh seperti raja, pangeran, saudagar, nakhoda, serta guru dan murid yang belajar ilmu Islam. Sementara gender perempuan muncul dalam cerita sebagai tokoh putri raja dan istri tokoh utama. Penokohan dan gender tersebut muncul karena adanya unsur seperti: (1) letak geografi Tapanuli Tengah adalah berada di pinggir laut; (2) sistem pemerintahan masa lalu berbentuk kerajaan; dan (3) faktor agama Islam yang banyak dianut.

Abstract

The difficulties faced by students vary, such as intelligence and non-intelligence factors. This study is to know; (1) what the most difficult language skills, (2) the reasons of students at the difficulties in the language skills, and (3) how the students face their difficulties. The method of this study is descriptive, conducted in ILFS class of English and Translation Program at SAMSIFL (Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages) Uzbekistan. The result are listening (61.68), speaking (69.07), writing (71.89), and reading (76.29). Result of questionnaires; students like Indonesian language (85.71%), the Indonesian pronunciation (65.71%), symbols/letters is not different (80.00%), no difficulty in uttering Indonesian language words (77.14%), good and helpful guidance book (91.43%), speaker speaks fast (97.14%), difficulties in listening (94.29%), no difficulty in reading (85.71%), no difficulty in writing (80.00%), difficulty in speaking (71.43%), most liked language skills is reading (57.14%), most hated language skills is listening (94.29%), most difficult language skills is listening (88.57%), easiest language skills is reading (71.43%), and the students’ action facing the difficulties is asking the teacher (85.71%). It is expected that the ILFS teaching concerns on students’ difficulties firstly and give motivation during the teaching process.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to find out the types, the difference, and the reasons of conversational maxims occurring in the talk show. This research was conducted by qualitative content analysis method. The data were three topics of Mata Najwa namely politics, law, and education with different guests culture; Javanese, Makassar, Bataknese, and Chinese. The findings showed that all kinds of conversational maxims, i.e. quality, quantity, manner, and relevance, occurred in all topics and guests. Conversational maxims occurring in topic of politics is dominantly violated maxim of relevance, in topic of law is dominantly obeyed maxim of relevance, in topic of education is dominantly violated maxim quantity. Conversational maxims occurring with the Javanese guests is dominantly violated maxim of relevance, with the Makassar, Bataknese, and Chinese guests are all dominantly violated maxim of quantity. There are no relationship between culture and language tradition of the guests and their conversational maxims because the guests of Makassar, Bataknese, and Chinese have the same violation of maxim of quantity and all different guests have the same abstain obedience of maxim of manner. Factors affecting conversational maxims found are (1) The language attitude of the guests as participants in answering, (2) tendency to hide something or not to reveal truly, (3) making a joke or humorous answer, (4) using the metaphorical words in comparing or using language features, and (5) the issues of the topic itself.

Abstract

SMA di Darul Mursyid, Desa Sidapdap Simanosor Kecamatan Saipar Dolok Hole Kabupaten Tapanuli Selatan, Sumatere Utara. PKM ini diadakan di kelompok Saintek dan Soshum untuk persiapan memasuki Perguruan Tinggi Negeri (PTN). Pengajaran diberikan sebagai salah satu bentuk pengabdian pada kelompok masyarakat yang membutuhkan pengajaran literasi bahasa Inggris. PKM ini adalah bentuk pengajaran literasi bahasa Inggris secara rutin pada periode I (September s/d Oktober 2022). Pengajaran rutin diperlukan karena untuk peningkatan literasi bahasa Inggris dilakukan dengan intensitas yang banyak dan pengulangan. Metode pengajaran dalam PKM ini adalah ceramah, pengajaran, dan latihan soal (try out). Materi bahasa Inggris yang diberikan dalam PKM ini dengan mengajarkan kepada para siswa struktur (grammar) bahasa Inggris yang mendukung pemahaman literasi mereka. Materi struktur tersebut meliputi: Tenses (Present, Past, Future), Passive Voice, Modals, Clauses (Adverb, Noun, Adjective), Derivation, Concordance. Untuk penguatan literasi bahasa Inggris, pengajatran wacana (teks) adalah pemahaman tentang: Teknik membaca (scanning and skimming), Topik dan judul (topic and title), Ide utama (main idea), Rujukan kata (reference), Benar/salah (true/false), Tujuan teks (text purpose). Jika melihat hasil capaian siswa dalam kegiatan ini, maka terlihat hasil yang sudah memuaskan dan telah melewati ambang batas (passing grade 600). Dengan adanya kegiatan PKM ini, maka masalah tersebut telah teratasi untuk mencapai nilai ambang batas UTBK. Guru dan sekolah juga diharapkan terus memberikan penguatan materi kepada siswa. Dan orangtua juga diharapkan memberi motivasi/dorongan kepada para siswa dalam belajar untuk persiapan UTBK tahun 2023.

Abstract

Abstract :The purpose of this research is to develop reading materials using digital media. The advantage of this research is that the use of digital media as a learning tool can be used as a reference in providing alternative reading materials that suit the needs of students. This activity involves analyzing and organizing complex skills such as learning, thinking, reasoning, assimilation, and problem solving. First, the media as a support for learning, and the second is the media as a source of learning. There are four digital media that BIPA uses to support learning to read, namely: wordnet, canva, website and kahoot. Reading Indonesian texts for foreign speakers presents its own challenges in learning it. Reading has several skills that must be mastered. The habit of practicing reading really helps you improve your reading skills. Using digital media such as wordnet, canva, website and kahoot can improve word reading skills. Abstract

This research is aimed to list verbal taboo of Acehnese language and to explain reasons behind then to create a model of language revitalization as well as to propose the pattern of euphemism in maintaining norms and values to minimize language conflict. The research is qualitative description in which the data was taken by recording technique, note-taking technique on the conversations of residents at the location in Banda Aceh. The findings of the research are taboo words in Acehnese language, they are: 1) Bodies and their effluvia (toh èk replaced to jak u likôt, lagèe èk leubô should be unsaid/unspoken); 2) The organs and acts of sex, micturition and defecation (boh krèh, aneuk tét should be unsaid/unspoken, mik/mom replaced gunong); 3) Diseases, death and killing including hunting and fishing (maté replaced to meuninggai, ka geutinggai geutanyoe, ka geuwoe bak Allah, lé that eungkôt replaced to na rezeki uroe nyoe, cacar replaced to sakét mangat) ; 4) Naming, addressing, touching and viewing persons and sacred beings, objects and places (du replaced to ayah/abu/abi/bapak, ma relapced to mak/umi/mami/bunda, kah replaced to kak/cupo/da, nan replaced to aduen/abang/bang, macut/makcék, mawa, deumi Allah should be unsaid/unspoken, aneuk haramjadah should be unsaid/unspoken, buya replaced to teungku waki, tikôh replaced to nyak ti/po ti, rimueng replaced to nèk/yah nek/rumpoe tempat, gajah replaced teungku rayek); and 5) Food gathering, preparation and consumption (it is not found). This study implies to create the euphemism formulas in avoiding language conflict, then the study of taboo is not seen just only from linguistical aspect but also from culture and human’s habit by discussing taboos from sociolinguistic as well as pragmasemantic.

Abstract

The problem of this research is students’ difficulties to comprehend the text because they had a weak vocabulary, lack interest in reading, and looked bored reading the text. By applying mind mapping techniques to narrative material, this study seeks to increase students' reading comprehension. In order to help students learn new vocabulary, access information from texts, and increase their memory for reading comprehension, this research employed class action research (CAR) with two cycles. The subjects of this research were students of the second grade at SMA S Panca Jaya Galang in the 2022/2023 academic year, totaling 25 students. This research uses data collection techniques in the observation sheet, tests, and documentation. This data was obtained from the pre-test and post-test results by applying the mind mapping. It has been found that teaching students how to use mind maps helps improve their reading comprehension. It can be seen from the data that in cycle I, 14 of 25 students only achieved a score of 75 or higher, the average student score was 66,4, with a total student score of 1660, and the proportion of pupils that succeed the KKM was approximately 56%. In cycle II, on the other hand, there were 21 of 25 students who achieved a score of 75 or higher, the average student score was 83,4, with a total student score of 2085, as well as the pass rate for students. The conclusion of this research is mind mapping techniques can improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study is about the difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions. The purpose of this research is to find out the students’ difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions from English into the Indonesian language, and the causes of the difficulties. The type of research method used in this study is the descriptive qualitative research method. Data from this study was collected and obtained through tests and questionnaires. The subject of this study was 10 students from the 5th semester in majoring English Education at UNPRI Medan. Tests were distributed to the students to find out the student’s ability to translate idiomatic expressions, and what their difficulties, the results of translation were totally inadequate on 17%, inadequate on 19%, adequate on 11%, almost completely successful on 11%, and successful on 42%. After that, the researchers found the students’ difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions were lexical difficulty at 15%, stylistic difficulty at 28%, cultural difficulty at 28%, and 29% for grammatical difficulty. Based on the questionnaires the researchers found several factors influenced students' difficulties in translating idioms, firstly their lack of knowledge of idiomatic expressions, secondly, lack of vocabulary mastery, and thirdly, the students also rarely practiced expression idioms in speaking and writing. As a result, it is suggested that students study books, articles, papers, song lyrics, and movie subtitles in English to broaden their knowledge of idioms. They should also practice using idioms in writing and everyday conversation. Keywords: difficulties, causes, translation, idiom

Abstract

There are some English learners feel hard in understanding a sentence when they are tested in listening comprehension. It can be seen when they are joining a test about English conversation although they have learned English Vocabulary and English Grammar. To increase the English learners’ listening comprehension ability, it is so necessary to introduce basic theories of Pragmatics to the English learners. Conversational Implicature theories by Grice is one of the most important aspects from the Pragmatics theories. Conversational Implicature by Grice focused on the phenomenon theory of conveying more than what have been explained in the theory. That is why, English learners as English listeners in this situation must be able to master the conversational implicature theory that already explained by Grice. It was about how to infer the implicature in guiding English learners’ learning and it is able to be learned in such theories in listening comprehension. This research attempted to examine the correlation between them and it stated the role played in the conversational implicature in listening comprehension.
