Abstract

This study investigates how language represents ideology and power in President Prabowo Subianto’s 2025 state speech delivered before the Annual Session of the Republic of Indonesia’s MPR/DPR/DPD. Using a qualitative approach with Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model and van Dijk’s socio-cognitive framework, the study examines textual structures, discursive practices, and social practices within the speech. The results reveal that the linguistic composition of the speech exhibits a strong ideological bias toward nationalism, economic sovereignty, and social justice. Historical references, metaphors, religious language, and populist expressions served as rhetorical tools, combining to create a rhetorical arsenal that crafted legitimacy and closeness to the people. The speech positions corruption, economic dependency, and serakahnomics as common enemies while promoting UUD 1945 as the foundation of political and economic ideology. This study contributes to understanding Indonesian political discourse by showing how language functions to legitimize power, shape public perception, and construct national identity. The study found that political language in modern Indonesia blends technocratic, populist, religious, and historical discourse into hegemony. It is suggested that more research be conducted on Indonesian presidential speeches.

Abstract

The interaction between the Mandailing people and their natural environment is represented in the text Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk-Rumbuk (1872) by Willem Iskandar, which is examined in this work from an ecolinguistic standpoint. This research uses lexical and discourse analysis to find ecological terminology, metaphors, and tales that represent the Mandailing people's holistic worldview of the 19th Century, which views people, animals, and plants as interrelated. It was also discovered that the Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk-Rumbuk text had embedded local knowledge values and sustainable cultural practices, such as care for the environment and the proscription of overexploitation. By demonstrating that classic literary works may be a helpful source of ecological information, the study's results advance the field of ecolinguistics. Additionally, by incorporating conventional ecological knowledge into contemporary discourse, this study presents a fresh viewpoint for advancing environmental sustainability. This research affirms the significance of conserving regional languages and cultures to maintain ecological values in the face of global environmental issues by establishing a connection between the past and present.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine code-mixing in Mandailing Natal Instagram captions written by college students, with a focus on identity construction and digital language style. Thirty Instagram captions were gathered between January and March of 2025 for this study, which uses a descriptive qualitative methodology. Documentation was used to gather data, and Muysken’s (2000) theory of code-mixing—which incorporates insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization—was used for analysis. The results indicate that students employ three different forms of code-mixing, with insertion being the most common. Code-mixing is used to express identity and digital language style, as well as to serve as a communication tool. It suggests that students promote themselves as contemporary, expressive, and internationally connected people by using multiple languages. According to the study’s findings, code-mixing is a significant component of students’ social media digital communication practices. It illustrates how a multilingual environment shapes linguistic identity in the digital age.

Abstract

This study examines the forms, functions, and sociolinguistic significance of digital slang and informal English as used within online gaming communities. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Crystal (2021), Herring (2007), and Gee (2003), the research identifies and analyzes key categories of gaming language—including abbreviations and acronyms (GG, AFK, OP), in-group jargon (noob, pwned, meta), onomatopoeia-based expressions, and code-switching practices—and investigates their communicative roles in virtual interaction. The findings demonstrate that digital slang in gaming communities serves not only as a communicative shortcut but also as a marker of identity, group solidarity, and social hierarchy. Informal language functions as a mechanism of inclusion and exclusion, delineating in-group members from outsiders, and reflecting the power dynamics inherent in digital social spaces. Furthermore, the study reveals that gaming slang transcends the virtual sphere, increasingly influencing everyday spoken and written English. By uncovering how informal language indexes community membership and cultural values in digital environments, this study contributes to the fields of internet linguistics, pragmatics, and the sociolinguistics of virtual communities.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the structure and access of the mental lexicon in human memory through the psycholinguistic approach. The current study utilizes the qualitative descriptive approach by conducting a systematic literature review. The result shows that the access of the lexical knowledge is not constant, considering the frequency of the word, the contextual cue, and the meaning relationship, because it affects the language comprehension and production. The result also shows that the mental lexicon is hierarchically organized for effective lexical retrieval when people use language. This article concludes that the knowledge of the structure and the access of the mental lexicon is very significant for language acquisition processes and for the analysis of language disorders, including aphasia and dyslexia.

Abstract

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Natural Language Processing (NLP), has brought together two fundamental disciplines: Psycholinguistics and Computer Science. This research seeks to bridge the theoretical gap between how the human brain processes and generates language (psycholinguistics) and how machines model and replicate these processes (AI). This research employed a comparative-analytical literature review. Data was collected from leading academic journals focused on AI language models (such as Transformer and Large Language Models/LLMs) and theories of human language processing (such as Serial Processing and Connectionist Models). The analysis focused on three main dimensions: lexicon acquisition, syntactic processing, and pragmatic understanding. It was found that while modern AI excels at predicting word order and syntactic structure based on probability (like statistical approaches in cognition), it still falls short of fully replicating semantic processing tied to experience, awareness, and social context (a hallmark of human processing). Current AI models demonstrate impressive speeds in lexical inference but often fail at tasks requiring a theory of mind or a multi-layered understanding of pragmatics. Integrating psycholinguistic principles into AI architectures holds great potential for developing systems that are not only efficient but also more natural and human-like in their interactions. Further research is needed to build AI models that reflect the complex bottom-up and top-down processes in the human brain.

Abstract

The development of online leaming has provided easier access to information, but at the same time has increased cybersecurity risks in educational environments, especially in areas with limited infrastructure, such as Mandailing Natal Regency. This study aims to analyze teachers' strategies in addressing cybersecurity issues in online learning in the region. The research employed a qualitative approach using a phenomenological method and was conducted in Mandailing Natal Regency from January to March 2025. The participants consisted of eight teachers. who actively used online learning platforms and had experienced cybersecurity-related problems. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman, strengthened by source and method triangulation. The findings revealed that the main cybersecurity threats included account misuse, leakage of students' personal data, weak password usage, and potential phishing attacks through unknown links. To address these challenges, teachers implemented strategies such as improving digital literacy, using relatively secure platforms, supervising students' online activities, promoting digital ethics education, and adapting to technological developments, although these efforts were constrained by limited internet access, inadequate devices, and lack of formal training. These findings indicate that cybersecurity. strategies in online learning in Mandailing Natal are adaptive and contextual, highlighting the need for stronger. policy support and better facilities from schools and local governments.
